direct link to torrent - doherty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Xgl almost makes me wish my computer was entirely made of Jell-o.
- Hohenheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I just burnt and booted it, posting on the included firefox. It's great, already love XGL's features...the dragging is fun, so is the 3d desktop switching effect.
- SergeantPepper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13To be fair, the website does violate a standard web design rule: make links stand out. The link is the same font, size, style and color as the rest of the text. It does take more work than it should.

- Cossins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Oh man, you really need to pay more attention...
- flammon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Gotta love the way the digg effect feeds a torrent. Just beautiful.
- muppethouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The idea that XGL/Compiz consumes more "resources" to perform these tasks is misleading at best. I have two Ubuntu systems, one running Breezy, and the other running Dapper with the XGL and Compiz effects. Quickly moving a window around the screen with Metacity on Breezy easily pushes the CPU to 100%, all the while showing terrible expose onion-skinning like artifacts. On Dapper with XGL it's smooth as silk, with the wobble effect, not causing the CPU to go above around 25%. Everything is more responsive and more glassy that I have seen so far with Compiz. As another nearly useless comparison, if I move my mouse back and forth over the dock on my dual G5 running Tiger I can reach 100% CPU failrly easily.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This has officially inspired me to install Xgl on my arch linux box and i must say, it's really easy! And it did not break anything, I was expecting the whole xorg setup to come down in flames. All i did was install a few pakages, i did not touch a single configuration file (my xorg.conf is already set up to use my nvidia) For those of you on arch, get the packages from http://fopref.donnergurgler.net/xgl/ pay attention to the installation order, and you're gonna need to install a few other packages. For those on ubuntu, the Xgl packages are now in the deb repositories, follow http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=127090 to get it up (no pun intended). If you use kde, be prepared to encounter some bugs, window decorations must be handled by part of gnome, konqueror does not work, and the system tray is all screwed up, the kde devs are aware of this and are handling it. If you use Gnome, dive right in! Here is a list of the keyboard shortcuts that control the effects http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz#Default_plugin_keyboard_shortcuts (btw, the Super-key is the key with the windows logo on it)
- kabz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Based on using Mac OS X which does similat compositing of windows, the main differences with a regular Linux desktop, or Windows XP desktop are:
- no redraw bugs (e.g. overdrawn pop-ups), each window is composited onto the final screen
- very very smooth
- opens up a new class of interaction, such as Expose, which changes the way you switch between applications
I think it's incremental, rather than revolutionary, but there is a genuine improvement in usability of the desktop, and that's definitely a step in the right direction. - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Lets see Hardware Acceleration, is that something you would consider useless, Dr. Who? You can unclutter your desktop with F12. I think the most useful thing about it though is that instead of a slow 2d desktop you have a fast 3d desktop
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ATI - your really pissing me off with the no x1000 series drivers
But i digg it anyway - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The 3d part is nice, sure, but that is actually Compiz window manager. That's where the eye candy is."
Gotta point out that Compiz is a Window Manager and a Composite Manager. You can run the Compiz composite manager and use any window manager you want. I've used it in Gnome, KDE, and XFCE4. The Compiz Composite Manager is where the eye candy is, not the window manager.
I've had this on my arch box for about 3 weeks now. There's people that like to talk down about eye candy but this eye candy actually makes use of my 7800GT and makes my desktop faster. This is also very very stable for something thats still beta. I've tried Vista beta and compared to XGL beta it's buggy, slow, and no where near as pretty. In my opinion XGL looks better than OSX. Best part about XGL is that it runs on my favorite OS and makes my XP-running friends jealous. - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Will seed.
- acidzebra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that's really not doing it justice. It's about moving away from the old 2D support and doing real hardware acceleration on X, taking advantage of the latest video card capabilities. The 3d part is nice, sure, but that is actually Compiz window manager. That's where the eye candy is.
I've had a test system running for a while now on Ubuntu and it seriously rocks. - snooo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xgl
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed. If only the rest of the net worked that way.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There is one very useful feature, zooming. by holding down your windows key and scrolling the mouse wheel, you can zoom in very close to the point where you can see pixels. Very useful for those with vision problems (although i don't know what a person with vision problems is doing with a 3D accelerated graphics card). Everything else is just beautiful processor and memory overhead with no other intent other than looking pretty, and it sure does that.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm uploading at about 1MB/sec. I stopped overnight though so as not to draw too much attention to myself and feel the wrath of angry sysadmins ;)
(yes, Megabyte) - solanum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://getkororaa.com/ - Direct Downloads
and this is the homepage of kororaa the xgl live cd distribution:
http://www.kororaa.org - TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you want to get a higher resolution you have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and enter the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates as well as your native resolution. Google it and you'll see how to do it. Then you can save this xorg.conf on a flash drive and copy it over when you boot the cd the next time. Wish there was a way to save your config or install this to hard drive though. Do their install cd's come with XGL and compiz working?
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you know we are in march, right? :)
j/k :P im loving this too - zodiachh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3in short, XGL is a 3D-XServer which uses OpenGL to produce some eye candy effects on the desktop (at least in Gnome)
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone got any direct ISO download links? Can't get torrents through the restrictive work firewall... But it's got a much faster net connection than at home, so...?
- Pignanelli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aaaa, train commin down the tracks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(correct response) ah, I need to know that
(incorrect response) that sucks! mod down..
I'm still studying the Digg 'Intelligence Through Popularity' model, but so far I would say it has it's flaws.
It is definitely possible that something about the combination of software and hardware resulted in this guy's hardware failure. He certainly has done us a favor by telling us about it. (I blew a wonderful pair of tweeters through a software/hardware incompatibility once.)
Of course, it is entirely possible this guy's loss was entirely coincidental (hey equipment's gotta fail sometime). But if we never hear the report to confirm it, we'll never know. - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Downloading right now. Can't wait to test it out :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How did we ever survive without Bittorrent? The carnage from trying to release something like this without it would scare small children and older mama's boys.
- Vogateer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Okay, everyone, let's get some seeders to this torrent. Of course, checking out this live CD will probably get me excited enough to break my gentoo trying to get it to work on my main desktop.
- nelsonjj1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i didn't mean to be stupid - just cautious...it works fine as a live CD with no Linux installed. I'm on it right now...although i cannot get any sound (bummer). feel free to use the new digg comment sys. to bury that last comment (i can't bury myself)
- loftx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+250 hours until the download completes - why does my university block bittorrent :(
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3YES! Now I have a portable way to show off Xgl to my friends. And now I can see what a properly installed Xgl configuration looks like! Feels like I just received the perfect christmas gift.
- mushroomblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3that's like saying your house caught on fire because you left the water running. you're new to this whole "computer" thing, aren't you?
- phoenixp3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have an ATI Radeon 9550, it's working and very impressive. Seeing the video was nice but actually doing it myself. Congrats XGL/Novell guys/gurls.
- rcmiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Brilliant. I've been so waiting for an xgl/compiz live CD. The kororaa guys are brilliant for doing it first (so far as I know), and Digg rules for pointing it out.
Great digg zachtib.
3.2gHz, ATIX800, looks stunning.
Now I have to go break my ubuntu and try to make this work natively.
-rcmiv - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Mostly useless? Is it just eye candy, or is that anything redeemingly helpful with this application? Cause so far nobody has sais anything about it's usefullness.
- dnyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://utorrent.com/
maybe you should try micro torrent, force protocol encryption and that may help bypass the school's fitlers.
at least it works for me. - mckirkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a SATA plextor too and have the exact same problem.
- MadceltUK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The page takes quite a while to open properly. The first time I opened it, I only saw the login header and closed the page.
It took at least 30 seconds for the whole page to open and I could see the link. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whats so useful about a ship that looks like a police box?
- rcmiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2gnome-look.org
"snowish" - you need theme, gdm theme, and splash.
-rcmiv - theprogrammer56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got a Radeon 9600 Mobility and the Live CD just doesn't work. When the X server starts i just get a blank screen and the whole system just stops. Supposedly my card is supported based on the list above but it doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?
- thedjin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi, I downloaded, supposedly, the kororaa livecd 0.2, but it's kinda... not working. It boots some blue console and it's more like an installer, not a live cd... did i get the wrong iso? Oh, and once I type kororaa, it says something about there's no display device. I really don't remember cuz I tried it yesterday before a class, but I was expecting something like I dunno, knoppix, just... well a normal livecd, to boot and use. My video card is an ATI X1400, it's not listed on the "won't work" list but... so any ideas? Thanx
- rcmiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ooh...I was completely wrong...snowish gdm and splash...Polycarbonate theme!
sorry.
-rcmiv - TheBurt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1babbling:
Well my three video cards are: NVidia FX5200, ATI Radeon 7000, and something called a "Vanta".
On the nvidia one, it actually didnt get to X at all, it just hung on "Coldplugging pnp devices" . The other two just went to hell when Xgl tried to start. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I never post but this is truly amazing! You can play with Xgl Compiz all day long, showing it off to Windows and Mac OS X users without even breaking a sweat to install it! This is really good propaganda :)
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1after much mucking around (I had to use the nodetect kernel option and manually configure X and my nic), it finally booted. and man, it's so sweet
even on a celeron 733 with a geforce2, it runs smooth - zachtib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sure, Xgl won't, but I've screwed up many an installation by trying to make it work (adding and removing stuff that I likely shouldn't have) this CD allows users to try Xgl with absolutely zero configuration on their part.
- codemac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Xgl wont "damage your system". A live cd is only good for those who don't have linux installed. And to those who don't have linux installed, may this cd be a lesson to you.

What is Digg?
