- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Fastest patch ever (because Linux is more dangerous than a virus): http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-6164515.html
- Canute, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You, sir, are incorrect. It is against YOUR law to open the xbox. In my country, it is just against the warranty policy. I can do whatever the hell i want with stuff I legally own. I can even open it up, make a campfire while I roast marshmallows and sing comba-ya, and then when I'm done, i can piss the flames out. All this without breaking a single law.
But hey, us Norwegians sure are barbarians. - wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16lol it does seem they patched this faster then any IE or windows flaw.
- dexim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Last time I checked, both Sega and Atari were still in business.
- flappysocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Dear Lord Bill Gates,
Please forgive me for my sins, chipping my Xbox, and for not always paying my M$ Tax, but it is not often I come to you with my begging bowl. Please, please, can I have XBMC on an Xbox 360? I don't own a 360 yet, and I only bought the original Xbox so that I could use XBMC. And then I bought another when you discovered my chip, and baned me from playing Live. And then I purchased a third, for upstairs.
If you grant me my prayer, I will buy two consoles, and some games.
Amen - rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Why? Because he used his console the way he wanted to instead of the way Microsoft wanted him to?
- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. Hacking the 360 now is not about piracy. If you wanted to go down that road, you already can. The firmware of the DVD drives are hacked to enable you to run copied games. Just flash and play. What this is about now is homebrew.
I want xbmc running on the 360. Then I'll buy one. - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7
Hmm...soon the 360 will be a good mythtv frontend box for HD output....it will be real nice once the next next gen systems (Xbox 720 anyone?) come out in a couple of years to pick these up cheap to use for myth. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What I want to know is, how do you stop MS from patching this vulnerability? I mean if every game that comes out after the end of February is going to have the fix - and if MS can push the update through Xbox live without your knowledge or consent, how useful really is this?
Will my Linux install be overwritten/crippled if I ever run a new game, or connect to the Internet?
Will it be possible to somehow dual boot, to ensure that Linux still works, while MS can continue to update their dashboard/OS all they want?
Is simply having an Xbox connected to the Internet (but not connected to Xbox live) enough to cause the update to be applied?
In any case thanks a lot to the guy who found this for 'working with MS' to fix the vulnerability. Why the hell would he do that? I mean it's not like Linux is somehow connected to the whole Internet piracy thing. This has nothing to do with stealing games, or causing MS to loose money (although several people here clearly very mistakenly think it is). Running a few hombrew apps on the 360 is unlikely to have any financial impact on sales for MS at all.
So where exactly is the harm in just leaving MS in the dark?
Oh well, too late now I guess. I suppose we will just have to pray for a hack that is so huge and so profound that it will prove all but impossible for MS to patch. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Canute
Please make sure to have the appropriate permit for you fire. And when you pee on the flames please make the best efford to hide what you are doing, else you run the risk of indecent exposure. :D - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Please tell me that was sarcasm Phssthpok.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Might as well run Linux on it. The last few Xbox 360 games I tried weren't really any fun. And the stupid thing doesn't play most of my old Xbox games.
- Dylan16807, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, illegal is pirating games and calling them 'backups' as a euphemism. I don't believe that actual backups violate any law, and many people really do make them.
- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Phssthpok
We've also passed a law, that if you are that stupid then you must die.
So in accordance with the law, please kill yourself.
Thanks and have a nice day. - pnmoore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What are you waiting on? They are stacked up in every electronics store I have been in waiting on someone to buy one.
- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I recall correctly, the bootloader chip is covered with a big glob of epoxy, so it's pretty much impossible to switch with another chip.
- Nergar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When u buy a console it becomes yours, so you can do whatever the hell you want with it. The illegal thing is to make the backups not to make the 360 able to read them.
- bocaJWho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there a decent mod-chip for the 360 that would allow me to maintain my modified firmware, while still being able to play updated game?
- n0xie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess flappysocks can be described as a 'satanist' ? ;)
- SyberMile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2epoxy dont stop anyone. i bought my 360 if i want to load linux on it i damn well will to. backing up games is not the problem the real problem is people that sell backed up games
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3as far as I know, SEGA's Dreamcast never put SEGA out of business because it ran linux.. i'm not even sure if it can.. i remember reading about BSD being able to run on it, though..
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great news. Unfortunately the hypervisor hole was already patched. good job either way. I'm always impressed when doors get opened like this.
- slackerbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah. It's great that they're doing the work on the software now so that it'd be ready when a new hole is found down the line. :)
- Nergar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WTF are u talking about? do u even use Debian?
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2::pulls xbox craigslist post down::
- Davey78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why doesn't M$ let us stream to the 360 and have the 360 just play it? I'm a console gamer and I use my computer for work stuff. My computer is only a 2.0gHz Pentium 4 which can't handle the WMV transcoding in realtime for my .avi files.
What I would like to see is that I put those 3 XBOX360 cores to good use and do it for me. Whats so wrong with that? I mean, WMV has codecs to play these files, why can't we get codec for the 360 to do it? If its a licensing issue, why not sell the license to each user via XBOX LIVE? - cliffordmerkel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hm... Host is down.
- TechnoRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Dude... You don't need a Media Center PC you just need Media Player 11 and WMV format movies or you need to get a program that converts other formats of movies to WMV on the fly while streaming to the 360. It's simple.
- wompninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you've always read a book. SPAM!
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I guess Linux on a console is cool now since it can be done on the 360.
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2yeah i have a pretty powerfull vista machine i use as a media center/gaming/fileserver machine and it works great you don't even need media center open and your xbox 360s work great for watching vids pictures mp3s tv
only 2 things i have a problem with.. the xbox doesn't play xvid or divx so you need a program called transcode 360 and its pretty nice but it puts a lot of load on your host machine..(due to the transcoding on the fly)
and getting HD channels.. is still a pain in the ass.. the only thing you can really stream is OTA channels and theres like 2 where i live - thenomadsoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0won't I'm concerned about is,will the game work as well as they do now, won´t there be any lagging because of crappy drivers for the Linux kernel, that's what I'm thinking about?
- EzarKun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1well you can have media center in the 360, except you need a media center PC.
- gamehunter101, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3AWSOME
- kingmoffa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1nixfu , i hope your right. As soon as I move to hd - i will need some more power for my frontends. Im waiting on a ps3 in the meantime.
- RoboDonut, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I wish the Debian devs updated APT as fast as this patch was released.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1He should be prosecuted.
- Phssthpok, on 10/12/2007, -24/+0Can't these Linux people leave well enough alone?
It's against the law to open up your Xbox. Stop it or the FBI will be at your door. Hacking these games will just make the manufacturers go out of business. Look what happened to Atari and Sega.
