- BigBadger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I ***** on creative. What *****.
So anyway, what IS a good sound card for linux? - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Those who live in the past are doomed to become dinosaurs. Are creative unaware of the fact that DRM is going away? Like ATI, they will lose business. Last night, NVidia on the other hand, reported excellent profits.
- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6what the hell is wrong with creative? now that directX sound on vista isn't hardware accelerated (read: doesn't use the sound card at all) they need as many friends as they can get, and supporting linux goes a lot further than most people realise...
oh well, time to do to them what we did to ATI, make them second place.
(i mean its bad enough that they promised linux drivers from when they released the hardware, sorry all you people who got robbed by their lies...) - sanguinemoon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@GawtMilk While you're correct that they'll still be DRM 10 years from now, DRM works about as well as that "don't copy that floppy" and yet games/music is more easily distributable then ever. Every encryption/DRM scheme can and will be cracked. So yes, DRM will exist, but those companies will be facing a shrinking market share as they piss off their honest years and their content gets "pirated" anyway.
- Lorian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This has no source. For all we know this guy's making ***** up.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No, mandeep. If this was an issue market share, Creative would be merely suffering from myopia and failure to engage a growing market. But the reason for not having drivers is the "lack" of DRM in Linux makes them ***** for noting a Linux driver for the sound card.

Not really. A girl who lives across the hall at my dorms had been using Napster, but when she realized that it meant she couldn't use the music on her new mp3 player, she canceled her subscription and quit using it. Average people may not understand HOW DRM works, but they do (eventually) understand WHAT it does, and when they do they will rapidly move far, far away from DRM'd music. If it means piracy, then so be it--the music industry will just have to adapt to people's wants and toss DRM out the window, or suffer the consequences.
That's the way things SHOULD work: The industry working to serve YOUR wants, because ultimately it's YOUR money they're pocketing, and they need to realize that you don't have to pay them if you don't agree with their terms. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*newsflash*

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/16179277.htm - sensia3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When 99% motherboards these days have onboard realtek sound chip, why bother with X-Fi? Just ditch them as they are bitching Linux.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://opensource.creative.com/soundcard.html#X-FI
The X-Fi series of products are not supported under Linux. (Yet)
Closed-source drivers will be available for the X-Fi series of sound cards.
...
It is planned that the drivers will have full support for ALSA (playback, recording, mixer, MIDI, synthesis) and OpenAL 1.1 (with EAX effects). - GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@sanguinemoon
That's between us Digg users. The truth is, my mother, relatives and friends know NOTHING about getting around DRM. They don't even know what a codec is. The companies figure, "well DRM isn't hurting us as much as it is helping us" and therefore keep using it. - Yggdrasil03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0from a moderator on the Creative forums:
"I certainly don't have any press release or other information saying that, and the guy didn't cite his source really. Looks like a rumor to me."
I call BS - Squichie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0hmmm I wonder if it is true. I hope not, because then I will have to go out and find a different one to buy.
I will not buy from creative until they get Linux drivers in order. - npoc, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0Hello captain obvious. Of course there are no x-fi Linux users. That's because you can't use it with Linux. I have an x-fi sitting on my desk right now, that's waiting for drivers (I got it for free).
- WireShark, on 03/25/2008, -1/+0Drivers for X-Fi are available in OSS. Most distros come with kernels that support OSS, so you just need to go to
http://www.4front-tech.com/download.cgi
and download an RPM that suits you.
I have a Creative X-Fi Extrame Gamer edition, works perfect with OSS (in the soundcard list it's stated that it's an early beta driver). - GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1DRM isn't going away. That's stupid. As much as consumers hate DRM, the companies still remember the time of "don't copy that floppy" where games and music were easily distributable. I'll make a bet with you, schestowitz, for $150US that DRM will still be around in ten years. As much as it sucks, it's going to stay around as the corporations care more about profits than user enjoyment.
- Mandeep, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1considering linux is already a very small minority, and that x-fi owners who use linux are an even smaller minority; you really cant be mad at creative. im sure the costs of creating linux drivers very much outweigh the benefits. if it didnt then this article wouldnt exist.

What is Digg?
