- l800LEMMINGS, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I've been a long time supporter of xp and have considered myself to be what I would call a power user, tweaking the crap out of my distro testing various OS's. Recently my xp was writing something hit a few bad sectors and irreversibly crashed like a ton of bricks. All my xp disks were gone but i only had intrepid ibex lying around. I was going to install ibex just to dl and burn myself xp but surprised myself in finding 90% of my programs run on linux now and installation is a whole lot easier then before. I don't have to worry about tedious maintenance tasks such as defragging,malware/virus firewalls, and registry cleanups. The installation process on things like tarball/bin and forcing people to run terminal is what is still what's keeping it from mainstream although it has gotten drastically less difficult and easy enough for most power users to effectively use. biggest gripe is not that of linux but of apple not making a linux version of itunes and having an iphone it pisses me off and makes me want to boycott apple products in the future especially putting cease and desists for people trying to make it run through wine.
- kd420, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately almost all new laptops and desktops include Windows by default, giving no incentive for people to go to a free operating system.
1.Force people to buy your operating system when they get a new computer.
2. Make it incredibly hard for them to get a refund for said operating system, while propagating the myth that there are no real alternatives.
3. Profit. - TheWindBlows, on 11/22/2008, -0/+24. Walk in stores put live Distro CD/DVD's in all the display PC's.
5. Walk away, watch as people are horribly confused to see vista on the PC when they by it and not the displayed OS.
6 Profit WTF??!!!!
7 Meet with Bubba o_O;; - TheWindBlows, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Very rarely do people read the manuals.
The interfaces are pretty easy actually the issue's with acceptance is that it just looks different and people walk away by judging a book by its cover. - cadigger, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1Being a convert myself, and having converted many others to the "right hand", I believe the day of Linux is coming.
- SamSlater, on 11/21/2008, -1/+0As an enthusiast, I downloaded and installed Ubuntu just to learn something new. Unfortunately, most internet users don't/can't waste too much time learning something new. Our Mums, Dads and Aunts want to get their notebook home, plug it in and just do stuff the way they've learnt to do in XP/Win2000 etc.
All machines that come installed with a Linux distro should be shipped with an idiot-proof manual, that holds a new user's hand for those first few days. Surely this will cut down on the number of returns?
