- endersshadow, on 10/11/2007, -4/+85As much as I love Ubuntu, this is for Gnome, not just Ubuntu.
- stupergenius, on 10/11/2007, -5/+46Didn't you know, Ubuntu is the only kind of Linux on Digg.
- exec0extreme, on 10/11/2007, -12/+42does anybody else hate it when people substitute S with $ ?
- DigitalJester, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30Direct Link To Their Site: http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/
- thelastknowngod, on 10/11/2007, -8/+37this is just a gtk application. why is everything on digg apparently ubuntu only?
- skrite, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25yeah, saw this somewhere
what is linux, and can i run it on ubuntu ? - stewacide, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Someone make a .deb?
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Maybe I'm crazy, but I find the people who complain that it works on other distros far more annoying than the people who say it works on Ubuntu. The site linked to is called Ubuntu Essentials and it specializes in Ubuntu, which is currently the most popular Linux distro by far. That's just the reality right now. Anyone who has used Linux to enough to know there are other distributions knows it will work on other distros, so what is all the fuss about? Don't go all Comic Book Guy everyone says Ubuntu.
- dudinatrix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Web development
- LordVoldemort, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21How is this Ubuntu specific?
- nairanvac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13But, see, that's the problem. Wine isn't made for transitioning, it's made just to allow Windows programs to be run on Linux. User-friendliness isn't a major focus.
- Giga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Not true, Gentoo exists on digg purely to provide flamewar material against Ubuntu...
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11$oft was a variable, he just used strong quotes ' and it didn't get expanded.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Why are Firefox, Flash 9, and Opera in its repositories? Sure they work great in Wine, but they probably work even better in their native Linux versions.
- sloppychris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It's "hilariou$"
- Fartag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It's because every letter in "Ubuntu" is as curvy as possible, much like a woman. Also, you may remember OO (Open Office) had an unusually rapid uptake.
- dasunst3r, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14I wish I could bury this story for the reason that it doesn't apply to just Ubuntu -- it works for most distributions of Linux. Get a clue before posting these stories. Many open-source projects come with the source code, so you can compile and package it for whatever the boof you want!
- utsabscs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9"I ´m not an expert on Linux and i always had difficulties to install stuff in wine, like Internet Explorer, DCom´s 95/98 etc etc."
Why would you want to install Internet Explorer? - ocauTMM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8because noobs only know how to install things under ubuntu...
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7yeah.. but I like the repository crap, because I'm lazy and love the auto updates.
- dystopianray, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10As far as digg users are concerned: Linux = Ubuntu.
- jeff419, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Actually, NVU is really buggy. Kompozer, which is a fixed up version of NVU is much better, but it still sucks compared to dreamweaver.
- Justinpirate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8This seems to be an awesome program.. Just got it installed and checking it out.
- LegendarySock, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9How do I say "goodbye micro$oft" anyway? How to you pronounce a dollar sign?
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6hah... Gentoo isn't that hardcore unless you consider reading hardcore. They have really good documentation and tools. It was the first Linux distro I settled down with, and the install process was fairly easy as long as you can follow instructions. As well, learned a ton about Linux and my computer in the process, which was also something I wanted to do.
Great distro for anyone who likes tweaking. - Lyrandian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6If your college has stupid online portals for all your classes like mine does, a lot of them require activex controls. Granted, I keep a windows install running virtualized that I can remote into when I'm on my laptop, but that isn't always available if my connection at home is down. I need IE to use the services provided by my university, unfortunately, WINE keeps the hassle down.
- thomasb227, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7GIMP is a good example but it is truly far less powerful than photoshop. If you're doing design professionally, GIMP is a poor substitute for the adobe suite. Wine is coming along though and running those apps is critical to linux's acceptance in every corner of the industry.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Shhhhhh you will confuse the ubuntu people.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You apparently haven't used GNOME at all. Most things in GNOME are instant-apply, that is, they apply the settings as soon as you click them. The close button in the top right and the close button at the bottom do exactly the same thing. If the window isn't instant-apply, as in this one, there's an "Apply" button that will apply whatever you've done in the window. In this case, just as before, both close buttons do exactly the same things.
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That must really suck to have a online banking service that only supported Internet Explorer - I'd never log into my account in IE.
- LordVoldemort, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sorry, my Grandmother needs to play her bridge game.
- google01103, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sad but true, says something about digg users who are Linux users
- richip, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That title and link is misleading. Disingenuous, at best. wine-doors is not a GUI manager for wine on Ubuntu Linux. From their website, it is a "Windows application management for the Gnome Desktop". The direct link to their website is: http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/
Will these people stop doing the Linux community a disservice by making it seem like the software is for Ubuntu only. It is even clearly stated in the Ubuntu wine-doors site that the home page of the project is as stated above. atombride, you lose credibility by posting things like that. - carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7friggin right. I always wondered why when wine is meant to make transitioning from windows easier, there was user-friendly interface for it.
- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5./configure
make
sudo checkinstall -D - Meatshield, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5for those wondering how to install, just do this:
cd to the directory where you unzipped it to (like for me it was /home/meatshield/Desktop/wine-doors-0.1)
"cd /home/UserName/Desktop/wine-doors-0.1"
Then, as it says in the install file, type this in the next line "python setup.py install"
It will scroll through some stuff and it will install. That's about as easy as it gets (though I do prefer debs that was realatively painless as compiling from source goes). - cyberwiz01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There's Crossover for linux also.
- x2wenty4x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4does it only let you install the apps listed or can you install any windows app?
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Just because you use it doesn't mean it's the "most popular Linux distro by far". It may be the most popular Desktop Linux distro, but that may even be stretching it, because there are still many other very popular desktop distros (Fedora for one, Suse, Gentoo, RHEL, Mandrake, etc).
But, also, Ubuntu has nothing in the server market, and servers still make up a good portion of Linux installations. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3good suggestion... not sure why you were dugg down without even a reply..... gotta love the blind diggers.
- Induane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ummm...... Crossover is the supporter of wine commercially. Each release of crossover is a stabilized version of a wine version. Every change goes into the wine tree. There are exceptions such as the gui for it but the overall goal is not to need something like a gui hack - in other words things should just work - so those things aren't in the main wine tree as they aren't part of the goals of wine.
- Meatshield, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah I just loaded up a bunch of the Windows libraries and install DirectX 9. I installed steam as well but it keeps stopping at 26% updating and saying that there is already another version running. Dreamweaver stalls on install attempts as well.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3As the above people said :
a) For web development. I presume you're the kind of person that just says '***** IE' and most people can't see your site?
b) For online banking (for example) when the need to access is great but the site only renders properly on IE. - Giga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Web developers want to know if their site works on the most commonly known browser used, so they need to test their site with it.
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3***** spelled 1337 wrong. GTFO!
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah it's actually really retarded. The article itself says that there a no .debs and you need to compile from source.
- sloppychris, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6I love it. But this is geared towards Linux newbies. Being one myself, I think clear, overly detailed instructions will go a long way, but I haven't seen any. Maybe I should make them?
Yes, I know, this is version .1. - psycybrfrk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I hear rumors that getdeb.net will have a package up for it soon
- YokoZar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Making an actual .deb package for this is on my todo list for this week.
- elijahalcantara, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For shockwave too and for browsing ie-only sites
