- YokoZar, on 04/24/2009, -3/+41For Ubuntu users, I'll be replacing the icons in the 1.1.20 package with something more modern and less Windows 95. See: http://yokozar.org/blog/archives/56
- dirtmonkey, on 04/24/2009, -4/+28For those new to Linux and still clinging to windows, wine should be your drink of choice. :D
- blapierre, on 04/25/2009, -4/+26Thanks for the post. I always need to know when the next Wine release is out.

- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -5/+20It doesn't run Visual Studio or 90% of the apps I use for work.
So that statement is generally not true unless you play a few VERY popular games and just use your machine to chat/browse internet stuff.
I mean, WINE is great for what I do use it for but... by no means is it a "windows ditcher" for most people ;) - woody1987, on 04/25/2009, -0/+14You can get maya for linux native.
- AlexiHelligar, on 04/25/2009, -0/+13What I don't understand is why the Wine developers still have a "Control Panel" button under the "Audio" tab in "Wine Configuration" that does not work. Clicking on it gives the error message: "Fixme -- Launching the audio control panel not implemented yet! [sic]". This has been the case for years. Now that Wine is no longer in beta, either implement the feature or remove the button.
- Marshalrusty, on 04/25/2009, -0/+13It would be 18.04, wouldn't it?
- naz37, on 04/25/2009, -0/+13Its the default windows theme wine comes with. There are several good ones available that can help win apps visually integrate much better. Just google theming wine.

- heiroglyph, on 04/25/2009, -2/+10Visual Studio is a deal breaker for a great many Windows developers that have any significant projects that were started in it.
How could you possibly convince the entire company to stop development while you expend man hours to convert all the projects (many millions of lines of code in my case) and have all the developers relearn the IDE only to save a few hundred dollars per developer every few years?
It's not remotely viable.
It's like Photoshop for graphic artists, many of us can't earn a living without it. - inactive, on 04/25/2009, -5/+131. I don't want to switch, it's what I use. I'd like to run it through WINE, someday. But no, I don't really wanna use an alternative. This is the mindset with most other users and why they don't switch to Linux, as their main concern is, "Can I use the same apps in Linux?" (keyword: same, not similar)
2. All of our projects are structured around it. There are no viable VS alternatives that will seamlessly integrate various windows dev environments with Linux.
Not raining on anyone's parade. Just being realistic. - noahgelman, on 04/25/2009, -0/+8wtf?
- KhaaL, on 04/24/2009, -10/+18Wine Is Not...
- jamesmcm, on 04/25/2009, -4/+11Huh?
Flash drives should work out of the box on Ubuntu. At most you may need to install pmount and reboot. - mrsteveman1, on 04/25/2009, -4/+10Oh right, i forgot the passphrase. Linux is so cool, Microsoft sux PENGUIN POWER!
Question still stands, why do windows apps look so bad in wine. - heiroglyph, on 04/25/2009, -1/+7The problem is, what is the benefit?
Just because I think it would be cool to use Linux, that doesn't give any tangible benefit to the company, the product or many of the other engineers.
A few hundred dollars here and there isn't a blip on the radar of the company, so there would have to be something worthwhile to justify the downtime. - zwaldowski, on 04/25/2009, -6/+11Or.. just troll troll troll and have the real deal troll.
- Kriztov, on 04/25/2009, -2/+7I do use RSS... Digg RSS
- int19h, on 04/25/2009, -1/+6Because of the price tag, the rapid growth and the development model, I think Linux has gravity on its side. I don't think users and businesses that switch properly from Windows to Linux ever switch back. It's a one-way street. Add inn virtual machines, good substitutes and Wine, and I think it's more a question of when than if.
Also, remember that for each improvement in Wine, many issues are solved in several applications. The rate of the number of applications that work increases all the time. - mrsteveman1, on 04/25/2009, -4/+9Do you just prefer visual studio or is there some reason you can't use other IDEs, some of which are cross platform?
- MattBD, on 04/25/2009, -1/+6@XeroXenith
True, but you could say that about any OS. In my experience Ubuntu is easier than XP to troubleshoot for many things. I've had Vista suddenly fail to detect the CD drive on my laptop because the registry got corrupted and while I was abe to find a solution on Google which involved editing the registry, there's no way in hell a non-technical user would be able to do that. If something similar to that happened in Ubuntu (and it may not even be possible for all I know), then the solution would likely involve editing a text file, which is a fair bit simpler.
Trouble is that most people are used to Windows and its various quirks so they make allowances. - prettyawesome, on 04/25/2009, -2/+7I don't know - WINE doesn't run a lot of things that the 'average' Windows user would want to use, but cygwin will run almost everything the 'average' Linux user would want, in Windows.
Why switch to Linux when I can use Windows + cygwin to get all my Windows and Linux needs met? - sirhomer, on 04/25/2009, -1/+6Yeah it can.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... - MattBD, on 04/25/2009, -4/+9You should try the latest Ubuntu then. It's pretty pain-free nowadays.
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -1/+5oh ok
- mynameistux, on 04/25/2009, -0/+4rot in hell
- YokoZar, on 04/25/2009, -1/+5Yes, beta packages aren't pushed into Ubuntu stable releases because of the potential for regressions. When Wine 1.2 comes out I'll be putting it into Ubuntu 9.10 though.
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -1/+5Don't know. I find running a VM to be more effective at running Windows apps. I tried Crossover for Mac and it was, um, less than stellar.
- DBeta, on 04/25/2009, -1/+4Yeah, sure, you could RSS pretty much anything on Digg, but that would be impractical.
- hansrodtang, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3The package for WineHQ's package sources, right?
- Keithamus, on 04/25/2009, -1/+4I read that from planet ubuntu. Great work YokoZar. I am a firm beleiver that asthetics improves usability, and little steps like this all result in a huge step forward in usability, the likes of which Windows will never see.
- trmanco, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2This is great news
Thanks - inactive, on 04/25/2009, -2/+4Could just use Codeblocks, it's layed out pretty much the same and imports VStudio project files. You can also set it up to use mingw to compile win32 binaries.
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -1/+3How about, that you have easy access to a huge supply amount of free developer libraries. All it takes is a a few seconds from the distributions package manager to get going.
- XeroXenith, on 04/25/2009, -1/+3Emphasis on "pretty" - there are still a few things I experience here that a less experienced user would get confused by, but not really any more than on XP. Using Ubuntu has become easier than using XP for me.
- Sammi84, on 04/25/2009, -2/+4Tech updates are the reason I use Digg.

- srg13, on 04/26/2009, -0/+1You can't really use Windows themes very well in Wine currently though - not every element is themed properly, and it's slower than with the default...
- stix213, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1All my apps always look fine. If you provided at least a single example that might be helpful.
