- xptweakerntn, on 07/26/2008, -2/+32Oh!!! I get it. As soon as illustrator, iTunes, and CS3 work flawlessly in Wine, IT is there! No?
Forget about all the programs that do work FLAWLESSLY in it now. - etement, on 07/26/2008, -2/+25Wine Is Not an Emulator
- qbthemc, on 07/26/2008, -5/+27Linux users get boners every time there is a Wine release.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 07/26/2008, -5/+22Illustrator and CS3 = meh. Professionals should still stick with Windows, Linux users can use Gimp, does everything I need it for and it's free.
iTunes is awful. Seriously. Compared to any other media player, iTunes is lacking in features (no decent equalizer, plain interface, etc). The only thing going for it is the iTunes store, which, even though it's vastly popular, gives you DRM-encoded, iPod-only songs. I'd buy somewhere else personally, because I want content that plays on stuff other than iPods and doesn't come locked up with DRM (think Yahoo Music, closing and people losing their purchases, DRM is bad). You can use iPods in Linux with other programs anyways, and there are better media players (ahem, VLC) for Linux.
What Wine really needs is better DX support, so that games (something Linux DOESN'T have yet) will work. It's getting there, but still needs work. However, Wine seems to do a good job with game servers (dedicated server) so you can use your Linux box to host your games on. - aautopsy, on 07/26/2008, -6/+22Yes.
- sirhomer, on 07/26/2008, -16/+32Is Wine an emulator?

I take extreme offense to the comment above. Jokes about alcoholism are not to be taken so cavalier and have no place in the public space. I request the immediate removal of this offensive statement.
Sincerely,
Grumpy Old Codger - DyceFreak, on 07/26/2008, -1/+10why would you want to run a dedicated game server in wine? Ya know most of them have a linux native standalone right?
- sloppychris, on 07/26/2008, -0/+8The stories we want to get dug will get dug. That's how the site works.
- SpyDerMann, on 07/26/2008, -1/+9From http://www.winehq.org/ :
Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.
Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris. - DyceFreak, on 07/26/2008, -2/+9guys, were supposed to be talking about wine...
- InorganicMatter, on 07/26/2008, -0/+7E: Invalid operation wine
- hungryduck, on 07/26/2008, -2/+9Why not? Is it somehow causing you psychological problems?
- YokoZar, on 07/26/2008, -0/+71.1.x is the development (UNSTABLE ALPHA) tree.
1.0.x is the stable tree. - twelvedogs, on 07/26/2008, -0/+6oh yes it does
- oobuntu, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6for every person like you, there's 2 who digg it up because wine on the front page on a saturday morning is just one of those digg traditions...
- Kingoftherings, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6Version numbers don't mean anything.
- postvivace, on 07/26/2008, -0/+6Good *****.
- MrTulip, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5at least there are some blender jobs popping up recently..

- Dylson, on 07/26/2008, -4/+9Beer is *****. Whiskey is where its at.
- ConceptJunkie, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6But every Windows app doesn't run flawlessly in Windows (especially Vista where so many simply don't work at all), so you're setting a standard for Wine that Windows itself doesn't reach... not that that's saying much.
- pedepy, on 07/25/2008, -16/+21still no illustrator, still no itunes, still no CS3, still 'not quite there yet'.
- adamorjames, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6Recursive acronym
- Ratteler, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5Until I see freelance jobs for GIMP and Inkscape artists, I'm stuck with whatever OS runs the apps that people pay me to know, and the OS they run in. As soon as Illustrator and the rest of the CS3 Suite runs under Linux, I can't get rid of Windblows.
I don't play that many games. I do however WORK on my computer. - evilgourmet, on 07/26/2008, -2/+7I used that crappy Dreamweaver program in Wine for a class I took over a year ago, worked flawlessly. (even though I had to hack every line of code Dreamweaver made, because it makes sloppy code)
Wine worked it's magic, thank you wine -- otherwise I would have had to use the Vista machines in the classroom instead of a nice Linux laptop. - Cryoniq, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Fap fap fap fap fap.. oh yes we doooooooo! :P
- marine63, on 07/26/2008, -4/+8please fix starcraft battle.net
- Phocion55, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Something we can agree on! Your whiskey of choice?
- Protoss, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3It probably will, but will be HIGHLY outdated. You'll have to add the WineHQ reps to get the updated versions.
- marine63, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4yes, so I'll know when they finally finish fixing starcraft battle.net
- InorganicMatter, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3No, but LAME ain't an MP3 Encoder and GNU's Not Unix either. Suuuuuuure......
- YojimboJango, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Dear Grumpy Old Codger,
I take extreme offense to your extreme offense about the comment above. Jokes about taking offense to jokes about acoholism have no place in the public space. I request an immediate removal of this offensive statment.
Sincerely,
Codgered old Grumpy.
/Wine Is Not an Emulator. - rompom7, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4No, as soon as every windows app can run flawlessly in Wine, it's there. Any point before that, it's just almost there.
- bigsteve, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2It's cool, it failed because he didn't use the -R switch.
- surian, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2They need to fix the animated cursor bug...
- Cryoniq, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2You need to open your eyes and discover native Linux gaming. And there is a lot around and more incoming.
- Gudeldar, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2I love WINE but I think recursive acronyms like WINE and GNU are dumb as hell, imagine trying to explain what either stood for to a person who didn't know anything about either. "It stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator" "Okay but what does the W stand for? WINE". Also hate how FSF expects people to pronounce the G in GNU. Adding a g in front of words like GNU is awkward as hell to say "guh" in front of "nu".
/irrelevant rant over - thushan, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4Cheers!
- Dylson, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Jack Daniels. Good sir.
- Gudeldar, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2I don't, Digg should add an Ubuntu, WINE, xkcd, Obama, OMG ORGASM section
