- GrooTheWanderer, on 03/28/2009, -1/+58But what you probably don't realize is that your update manager relies on Digg for its new version notifications.
- Ophie, on 03/28/2009, -1/+37Wine is pure badass.
- trmanco, on 03/27/2009, -1/+30What's new in this release (see below for details):
- RPC over HTTP support.
- Improved support for upgrades in MSI.
- Debug symbols in WineDbg on Mac OS X.
- Many Direct3D code cleanups.
- Various bug fixes. - Zaggynl, on 03/28/2009, -3/+25Low performance in Crysis? ಠ_ಠ
- jamesmcm, on 03/28/2009, -0/+19You do realize just how amazing it is that it can run anything at all.
The work they've done really is incredible.
TBH, really we need Adobe to just port CS to GNU/Linux. It can't be that difficult since it's already ported to OS X. - srg13, on 03/28/2009, -0/+17It's been able to run Crysis for months... As long as you're willing to put up with graphics that are a bit dodgy, and low performance...
- thenikola, on 03/28/2009, -2/+19Not everyone considers it a battle.
- wontstoptalking, on 03/28/2009, -9/+25Okay, good, but I don't need Digg to do what my update manager already does.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/28/2009, -1/+16And we still don't care how much you care, either.
- RagManX, on 03/28/2009, -1/+16So it betters recreates the Windows experience quite faithfully? :)
- horsepie, on 03/28/2009, -0/+15"You obviously care enough to reply."
Oh the irony. - srg13, on 03/28/2009, -4/+19We know Linux is the proper OS, but sometimes there are one or two Windows applications you need.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/28/2009, -0/+14Dugg just to spite all the complainers about this being on the front page.
- DBeta, on 03/28/2009, -0/+14Check the Wine appdb. They list support for everything. Sometimes the support listings are a little out of date, but it should give you a pretty good idea.
- Gerbil_Juice, on 03/28/2009, -0/+13Yes. The only thing Linux had going for it was the exclusivity of Tuxracer.
- Dalif, on 03/28/2009, -1/+14If you can get the best of both worlds, why not do that? Not all people wants to have to run an os based on the applications they sometimes have to use. I'd like to ditch windows altogether, but haven't been able to properly due to some of the programs I need for work. But with Wine I'm edging closer to the day where a total switch is inevitable.
- jamesmcm, on 03/28/2009, -0/+10I'd check if there's an F/OS client for Yahoo messenger first.
And try and use OpenOffice where possible. It's better to support native projects. - pip182, on 03/28/2009, -0/+8Strange that you think that tuxracer being ported to windows is defeat for the linux desktop. What about the gimp windows port? Is that defeat also? Linux is about freedom, letting you do what you want with your code, no restrictions. It's about people working together as a comunity, sharing ideas and also problems to try to make the experience better. Also almost anything written for linux is able to be cross platform, unlike some other os i know of. It has only just begun, you can't defeat freedom.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -1/+9I am so happy for you! Do you need help with it?
- naesa, on 03/28/2009, -1/+8It's not a battle. And wine is needed until gamedevelopers compile their games for linux
- YokoZar, on 03/28/2009, -0/+7It's interesting you note that, because I've been working on a model that more or less does just that. The amazing thing is that the conclusion is more or less the same no matter what parameters I plug into the model (number of bugs, avg bugs per app, what order bugs are fixed, etc) -- Wine development in terms of working applications continually accelerates. The reason is collateral damage - by fixing bug X to make program Foo work, we don't have to fix bug X in some other application no one was even paying attention to. Eventually, it all adds up, and random applications start working (or almost working) without extra effort.
So, yes, the speed at which new applications start working keeps going up. That's even without factoring the extra developers the project has attracted in recent years. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/28/2009, -1/+8What about OpenOffice.org? things like Pidgin.
If you're that worried about running the EXACT same software you run in Windows DON'T USE LINUX.
Switching to any new OS requires a certain level of adventure. If you're content with what you have don't waste your time. You'll only be met with frustration. - moduc, on 03/28/2009, -0/+6Wine development runs at a feverish rate. I wonder if someone have done a study, and project when Wine would run 99% of all Windows application.
It seems very feasible. - srg13, on 03/28/2009, -0/+6CS2 works pretty well to me. From the appdb, it looks like CS4 though is now working far better than I had thought, which is awesome - I'll have to give it a try.
- srg13, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5Those are generated from the bug tracker. Whoever made bug 2366 made the error, not the person who assembled the release announcement.
- chris062689, on 03/28/2009, -1/+6I really wish they would work on compatibility with Source-based games.
Everyone keeps marking them Platinum when theres show stopping bugs!
(Random crashes, slow performance, etc.) - KotoOni, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5I've been an avid fan of wine for a few years now, and I congratulate the developers on still sticking with this project after so long!
Well done! - kaiwai, on 03/28/2009, -1/+6Lots of error's fixed up on OpenSolaris - so hopefully once wine 1.2 is released (1.1.x is the development branch of 1.2) people will be able to run a good many titles out of the box with *NIX.
- srg13, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5All the ones I play with it run great - what are you having a problem with? The last release actually gave me a 20 - 40 fps (average) performance boost as well, which was pretty awesome.
- sirhomer, on 03/28/2009, -1/+6OpenGL and OpenAL could be what you are looking for.
- AirRaven, on 03/28/2009, -1/+6Not all of us can write code at that level.
We're the people who end up *using* it- I see very little wrong with wishing for a couple of fixes. It's not as though it throws all their hard work back in their faces. - nickallen74, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5Does your update manager offer a convenient place to discuss the update too?
- fuzzybad, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5Because some people want or need to run Windows applications on other operating systems. What's so hard to understand about that?
- Culyt, on 03/28/2009, -1/+5They will. Of course by then CS5 or 6 will be out.
With that said, do you really need that crap? Photoshop 6/7 will still do just about anything most people would want. Hell even what professionals would want, its not like there are more pixels in the new version or something.
With that said I understand CS2 works now (although now i'm looking it up in appdb, CS4 is actually getting a gold rating while CS2 and CS3 are silver). Gold might not be usable though. CS1 has a platinum rating. - makario, on 09/03/2009, -1/+5Why does Linux need to be able to run Windows software to be "desktop ready"?
- leamanc, on 03/28/2009, -0/+4Ummm...you do realize that Adobe CS running on Mac OS X is based on the Carbon libraries that were inherited from the Classic Mac OS? And that Adobe CS uses next to nothing of the Unix subsystem on OS X? Just because something runs on OS X doesn't mean it's an immediate candidate to run on Linux.
- mikedoth, on 03/28/2009, -1/+5I'm really getting sick of the Crysis comments... what the hell have they done to help out?
- gn0stik, on 03/28/2009, -2/+5@jamesmcm - Ironically, WINE is a native product.
video in YM is a function of directx, you need to get that working correctly in wine if you want video in yahoo messenger. I'm not saying I know how to do it. Just logically following dependencies to the root of your problem.
However, if messenger and word are your major bitches about a product like this, you probably shouldn't be running linux.
As james said.... There are alternatives to those programs on linux. The only thing you should be using wine for is programs that have no equivalent for the linux platform. - porl, on 03/28/2009, -1/+4then linux (using wine) would become *more* compatible with most applications out there than windows. somehow i think that microsoft won't do that...
- jamesmcm, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2I've only had an issue with L4D.
- Gerbil_Juice, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2I can't feed my TF2 addiction now. With all settings set to minimum I get under 10 FPS on a machine that blows the game out of the water on Windows.
WoW runs fine though so I'm fairly content. - ercax, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2"And we still don't care how much you care, either."
Me too!! - XeroXenith, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Digg Rule #4,626: Check up on release cycles before complaining about them.
- unfairlyowned, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Wine just keeps getting better and better
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2Well, contribute! Report the bugs! That's what OSS is all about, right? They won't get fixed any other way.
Besides, it's also possible it's an issue you could fix or that has a workaround. - ruskie, on 03/28/2009, -1/+2Have fun using win98 me.
- drunkenoaf, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Someone actually learning a bit of coding, or even taking the time to do some testing on betas and reporting appropriately contributes to the project immensely.
Demanding this, that and the other (for free) on Digg doesn't. - chris062689, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Which drivers / Linux Distro (+ Version) are you guys using?
I'm using Jaunty, with the 180.37 NVIDIA drivers.
I'm starting to think perhaps Jaunty / 180.37 is my problem.
In TF2, I have to set the graphics all to low, otherwise it crashes after about 10 minutes of play.
In CSS, I can login to servers, but if I try to hit "OK" to the MOTD, it crashes...
Wine 1.1.18
You guys think it's a Jaunty issue, or just an issue with WINE in general? - srg13, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1I don't see why everyone thinks DirectX is some magical and awesome game development framework... I mean, most of its libraries have been depreciated, so it's basically just Direct3D now, which can be easily replaced with OpenGL... And since Windows Vista, Microsoft's sound libraries are only software accelerated, so the cross platform OpenAL is a better choice even on Windows...
- naesa, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Many games run under OpenGL aswell as DirectX and gets compiled for Mac so how hard can it be to ship a game like say World of Warcraft for Linux.
