- LordBacon, on 03/15/2009, -1/+45Yes, apparently.

...works on my system anyway :) - inactive, on 03/15/2009, -13/+42Digg me down please...
- replaysMike, on 03/15/2009, -4/+32they make more improvements quicker than the Windows team itself.
- angryfirelord, on 03/15/2009, -0/+25http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=a ...
Got a silver rating, so I don't see why not. Still, you might run into some glitches just because it's intense on the GPU. - PeachCobbler, on 03/13/2009, -2/+25Alot of maintenance done in this release. Good to see regression tests being done on their Windows port, which actually serves an important purpose. The fixed bug list is short in this incremental release cheers to the wine team for their hard work as always on trying to make this gargantuan project stable and more efficient.

- KineticShampoo, on 03/15/2009, -1/+163.5 SECONDS! HOLY ***** WHY DOES IT TAKE SO ***** LONG. GOD DAMNIT, *****! *****!
- earthforce1, on 03/14/2009, -3/+18Glad to see the 64 bit improvements. Stuff "not quite working" under Wine was one of the biggest handicaps worh running 64 bit Ubuntu.
- EerFoolWVU, on 03/15/2009, -0/+14Remember when things like this used to be the norm for Digg? I miss the days of olde.
- srg13, on 03/15/2009, -0/+11So you'd rather put up with the generally crappiness of Windows for one or two applications? And some games (generally older ones) actually have better performance in Wine than on Windows Vista...
- superppl, on 03/15/2009, -0/+11Dude, don't tempt Ballmer.
- ikeeel4money, on 03/15/2009, -3/+14But can it play Crysis?
- zwaldowski, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12It's "their" definition of stable. 1.1 and on is considered "unstable" because they'll do "unstable" things while developing it. For example: new implementations of libraries, methods for doing things, or starting up an entirely new project (like DirectX). Someday, they'll just rename a 1.1 build to 1.2 and start developing 1.3, and so on. The eternal cycle. This allows for a level of stability and consistency, like most Unix-style developments such as the Linux kernel and many related projects like X.org.
- srg13, on 03/15/2009, -0/+10"I believe the WINE project uses the .dll (dynamic link library) files. So any .dll files belonging to Window 7 can not be used by WINE project."
Completely wrong. No part of Wine is based on, or taken from Windows executables or code. It is 100% clean room reverse engineered code.
In other words, everything in Wine is completly written from scratch by the Wine developers, which is why it is completly legal and Microsoft can do nothing to shut the project down. - Akkarin, on 03/15/2009, -0/+10GTA4 barely runs on windows...
- FKnight, on 03/15/2009, -2/+12"3.5 seconds to open a 500k single executable file on a 1.86 Ghz machine? Pathetic."
To be fair, how is that different from Windows? - Gary13579, on 03/15/2009, -0/+101.86 GHZ MACHINE I SPENT $50 ON THIS ***** WATCH ME FLY THROUGH WINDOWS SO LONG AS I TURN ALL ANIMATIONS AND STYLES OFF.
- superppl, on 03/15/2009, -0/+9Sorry, you have make a stupid ignorant comment for us to respect that wish.
- dotRoot, on 03/15/2009, -0/+9Except, that Linux, and BSD code and features are used in "modern and new" operating systems, such as Vista?
Educate yourself ;) - logicbus, on 03/15/2009, -0/+8Wait, 1.1.17 is a development release? And the latest stable release is 1.0.1? What's the difference between a stable release of Wine and a development release? And why isn't, oh, 1.1.16 the latest stable release?
- dotRoot, on 03/15/2009, -0/+8Other than most of your post not making sense, I was just curious what UNIX has to do with Linux and BSD.
- SmackAttack42, on 03/15/2009, -0/+7Oh the times, they are a'changin'...
- superppl, on 03/15/2009, -0/+7WTF?
Wine is as related as to Microsoft as your hardware compatibility to Windows. - srg13, on 03/15/2009, -0/+6^ Just another failed attempt to bash something that you know nothing about.
- LostSoul83, on 03/15/2009, -0/+5There are two bugs I am hoping the developers can fix. The first is a bug where in Unreal II based games, the mouse leaves the game window and you cannot turn 360 degrees. This bug affects a hell-of-a-lot of games, because so many games use the UE2 engine. The second is a vertex blending issue with No One Lives Forever 2. Someone has made a patch for number 2, but he said it was rejected because it implements the vertex blending in software. Obviously using the hardware will result in faster performance.
- hehdot, on 03/15/2009, -1/+6Has anyone had luck getting gta4 to run? (I'm on OSX with wine)
- mudfly, on 03/15/2009, -0/+5I play Guild Wars under Wine about 3 times a week. It works pretty good, not perfect, but I am not complaining. I doubt I would be playing Guild Wars if it wasn't for Wine, its an ok game, but not nearly good enough to get me to boot Windows to play. The main bug that annoys the hell out of me is when you lose your cursor icon, it happens to me only after hours of play and the only way to fix it is to restart the game, which is not ideal in the middle of a dungeon raid.
- gothsquirrel, on 03/15/2009, -1/+5Guild Wars fixes?!? Really I liked that game for a little while but really now?!? Do people still play it? ok I'm done ranting please tell me what you think about it. .p.s. It seems like joystick support on osx is way overdue.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4Just a few seconds with Notepad++
(about the same time it took to type this up)
Press "." and enter, copy both lines, hold ctrl+v to the desired length.
ctrl+a then go to TextFX -> TextFX Tools -> Insert Line Number
Highlight the leading zeros, ctrl+f, go to the replace tab, typed in "Wine 1.1." into the replace window and Replace All. fill in the top box to " ." and bottom box to " Released" and Replace All.
ctrl+a then ctrl+c, tab to Firefox, ctrl+v. - midtown, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4Just use the Intrepid PPA entry until a Jaunty one exists. It works fine. Plenty of binary packages are normally copied over from older versions of Ubuntu anyway.
- sloppychris, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4Fixing bugs in some programs helps others as well. That's why they even test windows versions of cross-platform software like Firefox.
- RobotBuddha, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4I want to. wine just keeps coming so close, but it always seems like there's just one program I need which it can't run. Then it does, and I find out another program has suddenly stopped working with it. Still though, there's one important place where a vm can't cut it, anything dealing with directx.
- int19h, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4Yes. You get native speed with Wine and it's open source. Windows in a virtual machine is neither.
- Labut, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4Well I do still play that game both in Windows and Linux and it is still actively played especially the PvP arena.
- srg13, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3With a VM you have to own a Windows license or it's illegal. Also, there's the performance overhead (try playing 3D games in a VM - you can't, but they work well in Wine). And the fact that VMs have pretty bad integration with the system..
- ruskie, on 03/15/2009, -0/+3Failed? U so funny.
- inactive, on 03/15/2009, -2/+5Nice work but I won't be giving up VirtualBox anytime soon.
- Smegzor, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3Where were you when we answered "Yes" ?
- dextermanas, on 03/15/2009, -0/+3^ Does updating to 1.1.17 fix the issue?
- twiztidsinz, on 03/15/2009, -3/+6Potentially-good-topic-ruined-by-excess-spamming fail.
We don't need to know when a new version of Wine is released every single time, that's what winehq.org is for.
It's the same with the XKCD and ZP updates. - InorganicMatter, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2You forgot all the alphas and betas inbetween.
- mabsark, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2I dual boot speciffically to play games. Culyt is spot on. They just aren't the same. Not even close most of the time. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying, or just does not play many games. If you're a PC gamer, you need Windows, end of story. We need a real alternative to DirectX, open-source, cross platform, and support from NVIDIA and AMD. Until then, gamers will always be using Windows, and it scares me knowing that some day, I'm going to install Windows 7 or its successor (Vista can just ***** right off). Well, at least I won't be buying it, that's comforting.
- Skurt, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2A Virus from 0 to 3.5 seconds after logging into the Internet.
- LordBacon, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2How much time it took to write this comment ?
- linuxlucas, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2Oh the times, that are a'....becoming quite different. :D
- Culyt, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3In my experience silver is often far from playable. Often its something like, "everything works, except clicking so the game can't start. There's a patch if you download the and compile from source, but then other games become unplayable".
In that case, look at the screenshots.
Even most platinum games don't seem to have the same quality of graphics as under Windows but that might just be older screenshots in appdb, but it seems like there is no lighting or shaders support or something. - zwaldowski, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3Scott, please build a Jaunty one!
- mynameistux, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3this is like so our year
