- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -3/+37Support the Wine Project!!!
- Kamujin, on 02/13/2009, -3/+25My personal acceptance test is when it can run Visual Studio. Awesome work though, don't take me the wrong way.
- spiffyfitz, on 02/14/2009, -0/+20Definitely not an emulator.
- irhiggs, on 02/13/2009, -2/+21I've got my CS3 working 98%... I dare not attempt any upgrades!!!
I want it tho...
Damnit, I must.
sudo apt-get....... - Benno, on 02/14/2009, -2/+21Why would you use a non-windows platform to develop windows apps? i can run vim on windows but I wouldn't write bash scripts with it.
- sirhomer, on 02/14/2009, -2/+20Another Friday, another Wine release to make front page. :)
Perfect day to release Wine, the day where people are very likely intoxicated with it (yay weekend). - inactive, on 02/14/2009, -3/+16Yes, It's a big damn deal. Wine releases can make the difference between hundreds of users being able to use Linux or not, or how well they can use it.
Many people underestimate just how much changes in a wine release. Small numbers does not mean small updates - in Wine's case, I don't think they've ever had an update that hasn't massively effected my usage of Linux.
So, if you use Linux or are looking to use Linux and waiting on support for a certain application, yes, every small wine release does count...
So stop being a douche bag. Pass it on.
btw, full changelog here: http://winehq.org/announce/1.1.15
If you are a programmer that will give you a deeper sense of how massive this is. (Especially for D3D) - srg13, on 02/14/2009, -1/+11If you're being serious: Wine is a reimplementation of a set of Windows APIs that can run on other operating systems (mostly Linux), which can run Windows applications natively.
- XeroXenith, on 02/14/2009, -0/+9This is just my opinion and experiences. Feel free to have your own.
AmaroK = great, but not ideal for iPods.
Songbird = looks a lot like iTunes and with bloat, but still pretty decent.
Rhythmbox = very simple, but works for basic iPod functions.
That brings me to
Banshee = supports video and audio and transfer of these to iPods, simple to use and with the features you need.
I like Banshee. - Smegzor, on 02/14/2009, -1/+10I run Visual Studio in a guest XP Pro running in VirtualBox on Ubuntu. I use Wine for lots of stuff (mostly games though). I would think that Visual Studio is too tied into Windows to be practical under Wine any time soon.
- virtualmode, on 02/14/2009, -0/+7Songbird could be your choice
- RaulMuadDib, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6We need a Rum Project.
- eqisow, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6"translating"
nothing fake about it... - ThantiK, on 02/14/2009, -3/+9I see a lot of "I want to run iTunes" buried in the comments here.
Why would you want that resource-hogging, quicktime-ridden piece of ***** on your linux computer? WHY?! - inactive, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6The parent poster was talking about the other parent poster :P VS develops Windows applications, Wine runs them.
Nonetheless. I think they were working on iTunes support. I could have sworn they had Something going, but I don't follow closely enough. - theaceoffire, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5Wine runs window apps in linux by faking system calls.
- metalgel, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4and im buried because what? showing that a power user stole another submission to hit frontpage?
- dawnraid101, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4***** thats the second time I have seen you, buried.
- srg13, on 02/14/2009, -1/+5There's this thing called Google. You should check it out some time.
http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/
A little out of date, but better than nothing. - theaceoffire, on 02/14/2009, -1/+5There are two reasons, why Vista is not going mainstream:
1) That one piece of software
2) That one piece of hardware
While the Vista devs do nothing for the second (Make the manufactures handle it, or ***** it), they also do nothing for number 1 (If it doesn't work, oh well, now buy the new software). - inactive, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5My point? Because these aren't like nightly builds.
That proves your ignorance - I use Wine and Nightly Builds are nothing like the releases. Releases are often prepared far better, and obviously have more than a nightly build a week or two ago would.
So no, just ignore it if it's not relevant to you. There are some people that bring up a terminal everytime these articles come up, then there are people like you who take the time to bitch instead of just ignoring it. - theOster, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3what no humor? :)
- plainOldFool, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3I'll give them a whirl ... thanks.
- kimbja98, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3I wonder if they fixed the copy/paste controls in Office 2003 (specifically powerpoint)? Copying/pasting charts is so useful that I find it's easier to virtualise windows and run office there than it is to try to get that to happen in wine, which is a shame.
- astyguy, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3Is there a Wine style project where you can run mac apps on linux ?
- censormagnet, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3id bet an older version like 5 would work
i still only have 5 and 6.. but ya i dont develop windows stuff in linux ;) - theOster, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3prob because they were both submitted "1 day 20 hours ago" - at the time that you were being buried, the resolution of who submitted it first is not discernible. take comfort that it wasn't *you* story you linked to - then you'd be buried into oblivion. :)
- Aethera, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5I have a glass now...
- flibblesan, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Better to build using MacPorts.
- tomharrow, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5in a one sentence summary ... what is Wine?
- LostSoul83, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3There has been an outstanding bug in the mouse handling that makes almost all Unreal II engine based games unplayable. It's as if the mouse leaves the screen when you turn 360 degrees. It's interesting to read the discussions on the bugzill page. I saw the guy who coded the Darkplaces Quake engine there making suggestions on ways to fix it.
- flash_jordan, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Out of curiosity, does that include illustrator? I heard that runes like trash so I've never tried to wine it. <3 AI
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -1/+3Too bad 5 and 6 were awful :\
As for developing Windows stuff on Linux, I just use MinGW with Code::Blocks. - tomharrow, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2great thanks ... was being dead serious and was bracing myself for a barrage of abuse/bad jokes etc....
- AirRaven, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2You could give Crossover Office a try, I suppose?
It's reasonably compatible, from what I recall. - sloppychris, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Wow, any tips?
- tux11, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2because i won't beeping touch microsoft windows ever.
- Kamujin, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2The "why" is a complex answer that involves me feeding my family and buying them nice things.
Nothing wrong with writing native code when the job calls for it, but calling VS "*****" tells me that you don't know much about software development, or at least have been blinded by some religious feelings about software. - BadAsh71, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2Visual Studio can be used along with Mono to create Cross-Platform Applications that work anywhere Mono is supported (Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, Windows, etc).
Not to mention that Ruby and Python are also becoming popular new-to-.NET languages.
Also, Visual Studio is undoubtedly the most user-friendly and productive IDE available so being able to use it on Linux would be a blessing as it would give the Mono guys an Industry Standard Development Environment. - eqisow, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2foobar runs perfectly under wine as well
As an aside, I wouldn't want to run itunes in Wine even if I could. I avoid it like the plague even when I'm in Windows. - Smegzor, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2Better an outstanding bug than a mediocre bug.
- LostSoul83, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2I for one, welcome our Wine overlords. :) Seriously though... I look forward to reading the feature set on new releases of Wine each two weeks.
- astyguy, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1virtual machine is my best bet right ???
it seems strange because you can get the code for the os from the apple website - irhiggs, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1sorry, late response... Tips? Install it on a fresh install of Windows first then start copying all the neccessary files to your .wine. Make sure to get fonts and winsxs. Also google around for it, there's a few how-to articles.
No, that does not include illustrator. I first tried the whole suite but later deleted it conceding that I only need DW and PS. - 4DFX, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1I know it's kinda funny, but the answer is no. It's 2009 and we still don't have a MacOSX virtualizer for Linux. Only emulators.
- sanosuke001, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1Well, your first problem was thinking that anyone cared about your podcasts.
Second, iTunes is a huge pile of ***** that I wouldn't even install on my Windows box, let alone a linux box... - censormagnet, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1qt is alot easier to use
- finalbroadcast, on 02/14/2009, -2/+3I would like to see them release a version for OS X. I am curious if the BSD version would do the trick.
- theOster, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1foing holl???
