*facepalm* - grapeape25, on 01/17/2009, -0/+36Internet Explorer doesn't even completely work on Windows yet.

- lemur, on 01/17/2009, -1/+23I think these wine updates are significant because people forget that unlike some apps, wine sees a lot of improvement even with minor release points. Windows compatibility is a huge struggle, and take it from me... going from 1.1.12 to 1.1.13 could just have that one bugfix/update you've been waiting for that magically makes your program work. Probably with every minor release, scores of programs that didn't work before start working. I've tried running programs with wine, failed, and then searched online to see what I could do to help them run; then I would find a message that says "this bug has been fixed in the latest beta." wine is progressing faster and better than practically any FOSS project I've seen, and it's awesome because it produces valuable results that are useful in the real world. I say keep digging it.

- bachflomid, on 01/17/2009, -3/+17I just started using Linux exclusively and I use Wine to run the windows programs that my wife is used to using.
- wedderburn, on 01/17/2009, -0/+12not really, there are some apps that use IE to render text in help files and such.
if you want those apps to work 100% you have to get IE's graphics support up to par - Craga89, on 01/17/2009, -3/+14This was posted in the Linux/Unix section. If you don't use linux and don't want to heat about things which are of interest to the *nix guys (Hint: Wine updates) then filter out the section on your profile page.
And just FYI, Wine has been in the works for over 15 years and is a great example of what open source is all about. Calling it ahem... 'crap', is just plain insulting to the people have worked, and continue to hard on it. - WhereAmI, on 01/16/2009, -5/+13Or keep using Linux and Wine since Wine supports the random Windows app that I may have to use to do some odd job.
- zendez1, on 01/17/2009, -2/+10Wine is great, but vodka gets me wasted in a matter of minutes.
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+8comment Dugg up for Linux.
- sigmaman2, on 01/16/2009, -8/+15That's right narupo. It's common knowledge that Windows is FAR more compatible with all of the leading worms, viruses and malware. Linux users should stop using emulators and suffer along with everyone else!
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7Internet Explorer still sucks, I say use NetRenderer or some other rendering service to test stuff in IE. Granted it doesn't work if you're doing dynamic HTML, but most people don't seem to bother with that these days. There /was/ a similar free service that could do Javascript and a lot more, however, so if you're just doing some things in onload you're in luck.
- d4ni, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5I pretty sure only a very small subset of The Sims 2's user base is using Linux to be honest. To be frank, I'm thinking it's just you!

- spinalcracker, on 01/16/2009, -9/+14I so hope that your comment was bait for sarcastic flames.. if so.. nicely done /golfclap

- Ansem, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4Top ten!
- oobuntu, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4if they fixed wine to work with the sims2, you would hear the cry of a million windows XP dual boot partitions being wiped at once.
- jakswa, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Yayay! I'm crossing my fingers hoping they fixed some of the issues with Left 4 Dead!

- kimbja98, on 01/17/2009, -2/+5Profit??
- PRlME, on 01/17/2009, -5/+8i been on digg years now and i cant figure out why wine releases make it on digg so much.
- drewhoo, on 01/17/2009, -4/+6Though I am a fan of wine, it is entirely possible for a windows worm/virus/malware to actually infect a wine layer. Have had it happen (as a result of not being as careful as I would be on actual windows).
- skywake, on 01/17/2009, -2/+4I am not sure if Linux usage on Digg is 5% (if thats what you are trying to say). Linux usage in the general population is about 1% and Digg is (or at least was) a tech site first and foremost. So I would guess Linux users would account for more than 5% of digg...
As for half of Linux users not using Wine. I am not sure how accurate that is. I know I personally use Wine for the occasional game or small windows app and there are at least 205 more people who care about this on Digg. Its relevant to all those people so who are you to claim its irrelevance to Digg? - pentiumd, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3How safe is Wine ? Can my Linux install get infected by Windows viruses ?
According to a Ubuntu forum thread (old one),it is possible.Has that changed with the new release ? As mentioned in the article,USB sticks are a major source of infection here in India as well. - Ademos, on 10/12/2009, -4/+6If it's so excessive, why does it continue to be a popular subject among diggers, every single release?
- hungryduck, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3"Red Wine"
The most generic wine brand ever. - brunovecchi, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2You are right, let's digg more important things, like an xkcd comic or a picture of a fat man with an animal print speedo.
- JoaquimLeiteiro, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2The guy in that forum ran wine as a super user (sudo wine ...), which is quite a dumb thing to do.
Actually it should be completely pointless, I suppose, as all apps should work without it, right?
He also said something about it being somewhat contained, the only problem was that the virus created some files and directories (poluted the filesystem). But it did not compromise the whole system as it could not actually infect normal linux binaries. Probably he would also be able to kill all running virus just by running "killall -9 wine"... - mattletron, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2You could consider that joke as proof it has just arrived ;)
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Some older games run better in WINE than newer versions of Windows...
- adamroach, on 01/17/2009, -2/+4Cheese is already in the repository :)
- zendez1, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Drink less whine please.
- ercax, on 01/17/2009, -6/+7Windows doesn't completely work yet.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1Outlook Web Access premium mode, one of those things I hate to love.
- tuxisawesome, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1I love cheese!
- LingNoi, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1That's interesting because the mailing list reported lots of regressions in 1.1.12
- JQP123, on 01/17/2009, -3/+4Because many diggers have been conditioned to the point where they are no longer capable of objective evaluation and exhibit a reflexive digg up response to any news about open source.
In other words, they're blatantly and unapologetically biased towards open soure --- open source rules, proprietary sucks. At least that's what they say here but in the real world where the rubber meets the road, many of these same people still use proprietary software. - lqqkout4elfy, on 01/17/2009, -7/+995% + 50% = ??????
- naz37, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1there is a patch available on the winehq.org bugzilla that gives a performance boost to source games L4D ,HL2, Portal ect. To my knowledge the patch is a bit of a hack and could cause issues with other programs in wine.
- LingNoi, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Depends, expect the worse however wine won't create rootkits because that's a feature of the NTFS filesystem and wine doesn't understand how to do that.
- brunovecchi, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1I just burried YOU for irrelevancy to diggers than don't care what your opinions are.
- brunovecchi, on 01/17/2009, -1/+2big deal. If you get infected with wine, you just delete your .wine folder and start over.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1"I shouldn't be informed about things that don't directly impact me" is the definition of small mindedness. Linux and other Unix clones are important, if small. And WINE impacts more than just Linux/*BSD users now as there is Cider and DarWINE for OSX and WINE actually has some esoteric uses for Windows development too.

What is Digg?
