- HCviolence, on 06/28/2008, -5/+77A number larger then one....that will take a bit of getting used to.
- chaos386, on 06/27/2008, -3/+47Damn, that didn't take long. Good job Wine team!
- YokoZar, on 06/28/2008, -2/+45This is a new BETA release. Unlike Wine 1.0, it actually may contain regressions; some programs that worked in 1.0 might be broken in the release.
If you are an Ubuntu user, you can test the new beta releases as they are released by using the WineHQ apt repository I maintain here: http://winehq.org/site/download-deb
Wine 1.0 can also now be downloaded from Ubuntu's backports repository if you enable it in Synaptic (under settings->repositories->updates); soon, Wine 1.0 will also be pushed out through the regular updates process similar to how Firefox 3 final was. New hardy users will be able to get it without doing anything special at all.
If you have been using the winehq repository and wish to stop beta-testing and just use Wine 1.0, you can disable the WineHQ apt repository by running: sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list - Spr0k3t, on 06/27/2008, -3/+35I eagerly await the day the world does not need WINE to get their fix. That was a fast release... gotta love open source.
- Origin415, on 06/27/2008, -0/+30They released every 2 weeks before, I assume they are going to keep that up.
- Sabretou, on 06/28/2008, -1/+30You got 11 diggs. How?
- expert01, on 06/28/2008, -0/+25I eagerly await for someone to port WINE to Win98 to run NT/2k/XP/Vista programs. Wouldn't that be a trip?
- Lewiji, on 06/28/2008, -0/+17Or perhaps WINE to Vista so we can run Win98 apps!
- z3rr0, on 06/28/2008, -5/+22Why in the hell do Mac users have to pay for Wine? LOL
- Phocion55, on 06/28/2008, -0/+14Good luck with that.
- srg13, on 06/28/2008, -0/+13Because 1.0 is a stable release series, but this (1.1) is the first of the new development series. 1.1.x releases are just like the 0.9.x releases - a new release every fortnight.
Eventually the 1.1 release series will become the stable 1.2 release. - pbaehr, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12Best bug fix description ever:
"9824 GTA Vice City: strange textures when you attack cars with a chainsaw" - cak3, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12I believe you missed the point entirely.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -3/+14Yes it would be silly, you're right. I'd much prefer to use the more stable, useful OS and still be able to run a few legacy apps I need
- IWDA4, on 06/28/2008, -0/+11Is Battle.net fixed?
- chaos386, on 06/28/2008, -0/+11Wine "The Big Milestone" 1.0 came out just 10 days ago. A lot of projects would be quiet after a big push like that, so the fact that Wine was updated *quicker* than usual impresses me. :)
- Jabertsohn, on 06/28/2008, -0/+11than*
- Fratz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+10Nope. Scheduled for v1.2...
- Stonekeeper, on 06/28/2008, -1/+11I LOL'ed. LOL
- mvent2, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9You must be new here.
- Fartag, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9Wine is only a portion of what OSS is busy developing on now, but it's significant because it's working to shore up the problems of OS vendor locked software (which, strangely, you spend your time preaching the virtues of!).
By all means though, if you have any vendor locked software or play vendor locked games that Wine doesn't support, then you should probably stick with Windows, and maybe dual boot if you want to find out the incredible number of other things you're missing out on (and will _probably_ be running anyway several years down the road). - farplaner, on 06/28/2008, -3/+11Yes.
- Fartag, on 06/28/2008, -1/+9Because Wine is an extremely important project, and it progresses rapidly and it's interesting to see the new things that are fixed, what else is supported, what has to be tested, etc.
It's important especially for all non-Windows OSes because its success means the freedom of everyone that's still artificially locked to the Windows platform. It's sort of a gradual open source replacement for an anti-competitive monopoly, and is significant news to everyone paying attention. What more should be needed to hit the front page? Top ten lists, sports bloopers, more reasons why we should all "ignore the critics" and "rush out to buy Vista"? - MavRevMatt, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Obviously Diggers like penis?
- hadak, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7Oh, wouldya lookie there.
http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ - inactive, on 06/28/2008, -1/+7Mac's cost how much? I lol'ed....
- ShadySpace, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6That was lame, man.
- hadak, on 06/28/2008, -1/+7Does this compile and work under Leopard, or are we still stuck with the much outdated Darwine?
- dirtyforker, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Because, despite the BSD base, Apple rely largely on closed-source software with the result that very few people will hack on their platform without the incentive of a pay cheque.
- robz0rz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Because Mac users have too much money, obviously
- blooby, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5Download the appropriate .deb from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html and you should be able to install it by double clicking it in Ubuntu. Obviously your Windows partitions will need to be at least read mounted to open the .deb.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5Fail
- dtfinch, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6I wonder why they didn't call it 1.0.1.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -2/+7It's on the front page because a lot of people use it. Now stop wine-ing about it.
- srg13, on 06/28/2008, -1/+6It's nice to see such a huge update after just having little bug fixes in the 1.0 code freeze. Great work as usual!
- PrismSub7, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group ...
It's too bad they haven't updated the w32 versions for 2 years :( - srg13, on 06/28/2008, -0/+41.0 will be the stable series - 1.1 is the new development one. Like the 0.9 series, we should see a 1.1.x release every two weeks. Then, eventually there will be a 1.2 stable release.
- srg13, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4You don't - you could download binaries here: http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ or make it yourself. The only problem is OpenGL not working I hear. So that means no games or DirectX apps. For that, you'll need Crossover.
- Fratz, on 06/28/2008, -1/+5Wine lets me run only the Windows apps I want to run, instead of all the apps that Windows always ends up downloading and running for you automatically, like spyware, viruses, etc.
- daradib, on 06/28/2008, -2/+6In related news: Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 1 released.
- srg13, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4It probably wasn't regression free, but there was a long feature freeze where the developers focused on just fixing bugs and regressions, making it probably one of the most stable release you can get.
- mastastealth, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4Wacom has been supported for a long time now, Photoshop CS2 and Opencanvas work with pressure sensitivity on my Graphire3 since 0.9.50-something. I'm still waiting for it to work on Flash 8 though. -_-
- thegodfaza, on 06/28/2008, -1/+5So does this mean a new digg every two weeks since that's the new release schedule for wine.
- bootup, on 06/28/2008, -2/+6I wouldn't have dugg this had people not complained about WINE being on the front page too much. True- it is on the front page allot. It just shows that allot of people are interested in it. Isn't that what digg is all about? I for one do not freequently check the winehq site for the latest updates and do like getting informed through such channels. I only wish people would digg the updates or new releases to more open source applications.
- HonoredMule, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3But Wine 1.0 was more a milestone in name than deed, making business as usual more expected internally than might otherwise be the case.
- JonLatane, on 06/28/2008, -1/+4Because I want a UNIX-based operating system for software development that can also run recent versions of Photoshop and Office? (While OOo is amazing, I still experience rendering errors on a fairly regular basis.)
- Ratteler, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3...Or, you can just run off and go ***** yourself.
- willdelaney, on 06/28/2008, -58/+63penis
- bobbyi, on 06/28/2008, -1/+4Yeah, what kind of world is it where Mac users have to pay more money for the same things as everybody else.
Oh that's right, the same ***** world we've been in all along. -

What is Digg?
