- roebeet, on 05/19/2008, -3/+144Holy crap.... I've been waiting over 10 years for v1.0. Next thing they'll tell me is that Duke Nukem Forever is being released....
- BarryChuckle, on 05/19/2008, -0/+120This wine sure has matured.
- wontstoptalking, on 05/19/2008, -3/+60Yay! Finally! Linux users, rejoice!
- jer2eydevil88, on 05/19/2008, -4/+40Windows can't even run Crysis well so how can you expect Wine to be better?
- planksconstant, on 05/19/2008, -1/+32or, you know, just as useful as it is now.
- dualscreenman, on 05/19/2008, -2/+28At 1 frame per second and with enough runaway HDR to make your eyes bleed, yes it will.
- crichton101, on 05/19/2008, -4/+29Duke Nukem Forever being released? That's crazy talk.
- unrealmp3, on 05/19/2008, -0/+25The point of using Wine is that you reduce the overall overhead of having two operating systems running at the same time.
- etx313, on 05/19/2008, -0/+22I want Photoshop for the PS2!
I'm sure you mean CS2, but CS3 is already working in Wine. Not to hate on the Gimp, it's a great app. But people want to use photoshop because it is also a great app and much more mature. - raydeen, on 05/19/2008, -2/+23I know it's not cutting edge by any means but I bought the full Age of Empires collection the other day (for $10) and was pleasantly surprised to see at least the original game run almost flawlessly in WINE (the other ones installed - haven't tried them yet). The menu text wasn't 'lit' but the game ran quite nicely. Now I can suck at old RTS games in two OS's. :D

- n0odles, on 05/19/2008, -6/+25This means Photoshop PS2, for all those who were too lazy to learn Gimp, should be compatible.
- EricAnderton, on 05/19/2008, -3/+20Indeed it has.
It has a nice nose, and a very playful character. On the palette, it has a robust FOSS flavor, with hints of Win32 ,accompanied by autumn notes. It has a certain old-world flare to it, reminiscent of a '94 Windows. The finish is dry and clean, unlike the previous vintage that left you with a taste of segfault, that usually sent the diner in search of a chaser.
This should pair well with a nicely prepared Linux, or a fine BSD like OSX, and a side of asparagus. - Gerbil_Juice, on 05/19/2008, -0/+16How is wine supporting Microsoft?
- Yodacola, on 05/19/2008, -0/+16Did Vista 1.0 actually entail 99% Windows compatibility?
- unrealmp3, on 05/19/2008, -2/+18Corporations don't care about Crysis. They want productivity applications to work first.
- maddog39, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14This guy is a moron... those applications which he claims dont work are working fine.
- keeganspeck, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14Hey-o!
- VinceNoir, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14Generally the argument goes:
"If you continue to use software that only runs on Windows then the developers won't notice that you're a Linux user. As a result the developers won't bother to try and port to Linux. By using WINE you're hiding the fact that you don't use Windows and therefore are indirectly supporting Windows".
This is, of course, an idiotic idea. The truth that it ignores is that if every Linux user abandoned Windows software that they still run (either in WINE, virtualization or dual-booting real Windows), the companies wouldn't notice the loss in business. Linux users are still a small segment of the OS market and would therefore have little to no impact on the profits of huge megacorporations.
I, personally have zero need for Windows and have been running without Windows (or WINE) for about three years now. Previously, I still needed Windows for professional video and audio production work. But the Linux tools have matured enough to do decent work if you spend the time to learn them. That being the case, Adobe, Sony, 12-Tone Systems, Avid/Digedesign have all lost my money. I'm not foolish enough to think they care though.
All it is for me is simple economics. I'm no longer paying license fees, experiencing forced OS and hardware upgrades or in fact spending a lot of money on any software at all. All that money saved has allowed me to build up my hardware arsenal very well. But the companies that no see my money haven't noticed. Nor will they. So the anti-WINE sentiment is for idiots and is purely irrational. - TheRealToma, on 05/19/2008, -0/+13"It will be something like be the next to last release candidate for 1.0" whut?
RC2 the last release candidate? Thats going to be next to last something like awesome! - TacticalPenguin, on 05/19/2008, -10/+22This will make the EEE PC with windows completely obsolete. *waits some more*
- Trixrox, on 05/19/2008, -4/+16This is nice, but it is so far away from complete usefulness. I prefer vmware with full windows on a linux desktop. Virtualization needs to get better. Rams needs to get even cheaper (it is pretty cheap now)...so we can run multiple OSes all at once. Linux, Windows, More Linux...great stuff.
- rdoger6424, on 05/19/2008, -0/+11wine has its own repository on-site
- cyborg, on 05/19/2008, -3/+14Yes, it takes Wine a while to mature, but I've had these grapes for a while.
- matschig, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10World of Warcraft isn't a game. It's a drug.
- Gogogo111, on 05/19/2008, -2/+12Just compile it yourself.
- djloekee27, on 05/19/2008, -1/+11then why are you readin' a linux article???
i don't use linux but at least i have the dignity not to come in here and "trash" linux. i'm sure that there are plenty of windows and apple articles for you to read.
get a life. - inactive, on 05/19/2008, -11/+21Will it run Crysis?
- dualscreenman, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10I lol'd.
/me turns up the sarcasm detector to 11 - VinceNoir, on 05/19/2008, -1/+11If you step away from VMWare, virtualization already is better. Xen running HVM (hardware assisted full virtualization) is lightyears better than VMWare. I was a huge VMWare fan from their inception, and they're still decent. But Xen give you nearly 99% performance of bare metal in virtualization. Something that VMWare can't yet do in their worktation product. ESX is really the only product they offer that's worth the money. Trust me, I've been doing virtulization daily since 1998.
- etx313, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Yeah, I doubt VS2008 will run. Mostly because Microsoft add new frameworks and libraries faster then Wine can reverse engineer them . It's just the nature of the project.
- Ricochet1269, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Not all software written for Microsoft is written by Microsoft.
- mrsteveman1, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9"Rams needs to get even cheaper"
Rams are already cheap, its the barn and the feed that get every last penny you have - aprice2704, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Do you think that if DNF is windows only, we'll be able to run it via wine 1.0?
- thinman1189, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10I just read up your previous comments to see if this was a joke. What I found was blatant racism and bigotry. Your backwards, misguided ways are outdated.
- estvir, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Wine is for corporations only? That's news to me.
- thepxc, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10It's not weird timing. There's always something happening in the F/OSS world; things move quickly there.
- thepxc, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10The GIMP was never meant to be simple. It was meant to be complete.
- Klemm, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Wine seems to have alot of support for World of Warcraft as well... So far it has run flawless to my surprise. Who said Linux can't do game!!!
- 1longtime, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8*crosses my fingers that it will actually work with my apps now*
- GreatSunJester, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Actually -- that is probably the only part of your LINUX machine you need it for.
- Lazydriver, on 05/19/2008, -1/+9So has yours.
- Appleboi4evr, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8god, so uneducated. i dont even have the time tell you how ignorant you are. besides adapting another riaa demon spawn would kill consumers.
- srg13, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8What? Which version?
I've been using CS2 now for a few months without a hitch... - mrBitch, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Even dvdshrink runs perfectly under Wine!
- GavinZac, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8its a release candidate, not a full release; thats why it isn't in there yet.
(Please don't lecture me on FF3b5)
Add the Wine repositories from the winehq site, always up to date. - eldridgea, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Here is how to upgrade to the official Wine 1.0 package for Ubuntu.
http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb
But if you already have wine installed, you need to uninstall it before doing this, however this will not uninstall any of you wine programs. - marine63, on 05/19/2008, -1/+9fix starcraft battle.net please ;,(
- courtjester555, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8Much respect to AOE II. One of the best products that Microsoft has ever been involved with.
AOE I & III? Not so much... - Yodacola, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7So many choices!
