- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -5/+89I'm releasing Beer 1.0.545 from my fridge in about 5 minutes!
- HCviolence, on 05/10/2008, -0/+73Wine 1.0? BRACE FOR IMPACT!!!

- Andytom, on 05/10/2008, -2/+56rc means release candidate
- harrisbradley, on 05/10/2008, -2/+54longest pre-release evar (I am stoked though!)
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -3/+46still no Linux support = fail
- sirhomer, on 05/10/2008, -2/+41RCs, or release candidate are is usually the final stage in a software cycle towards the final release. By final release it means typically the next major version (such as 1.0, 2.0, etc.) Other stages of development include pre-alpha (planning/prototype stage), alpha (incomplete software), and beta (mostly complete, but untested software). Different software projects may have differing processes however.
- TheRealToma, on 05/10/2008, -0/+38Now thats a Wine release worth digging! Good work all involved :)
- dualscreenman, on 05/10/2008, -5/+34That won't get you latest Wine. The latest Ubuntu has is a slightly modified version of 0.9.59.
Be a man and compile it yourself. ;) - Taiyoryu, on 05/10/2008, -6/+31Just in time for Vista!
- kenplaysviola, on 05/10/2008, -5/+28Strange, apt-get doesn't seem to work on my (insert non-debian based Linux distro). I guess I must not be using Linux ...
- ha1f, on 05/10/2008, -1/+24You must be _very_ new here if you think you're the only one excited by this...
- colincornaby, on 05/10/2008, -0/+22Sadly, they haven't. They're bumping it to 1.0 in time for some anniversary of when they started working on it. I wish they had stuck with the "1.0 when ready" philosophy...
- irieKEN, on 05/10/2008, -0/+22The idea that WINE would have problems running DOS applications doesn't bother me, because Windows != DOS. DOSBOX for DOS applications, WINE for Windows applications:)
- InuX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+22Hopefully ReactOS will step it up some more.
- MavRevMatt, on 05/10/2008, -2/+22Not only for CS3, but for much of what Adobe makes.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -9/+29Anyone notice this:
9178 "hello world" dos program hangs
ROFL I wonder how it runs advanced games when it can't do this - WhereAmI, on 05/10/2008, -3/+22So Wine 1.0 might come out before Duke Nukem Forever...
- blagoaw, on 05/10/2008, -0/+18The same reason people run Windows -- to run Windows software. (developers, developers, developers)
- blagoaw, on 05/10/2008, -0/+18It can. The bug just got fixed :) It would be a little disconcerting if it took 15 years, but in fairness, it can also run more complex things such as WoW.
- str1fe, on 05/10/2008, -1/+17Fail level is over 9000
- bob12321, on 05/10/2008, -0/+16To play windows video games and other software.
- jjones20, on 05/10/2008, -10/+26more like wine nukem forever.
- airmind, on 05/10/2008, -1/+17Not if you have this: http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb
- podgey22, on 05/10/2008, -0/+16but they don't know the difference between "their", "there" and "they're"..
- zwaldowski, on 05/10/2008, -2/+17I assume you're using Ubuntu Hardy. The kernel it (hardy) uses causes a DOS memory error in Wine because the kernel now protects a certain amount of memory to protect itself from being attacked.
- reventlov, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16Traditionally, the 1.0 version (in open source software, especially) means they have complete stable product. They are no longer adding new features and will _only_ work on bug fixes until they release 1.0. And yes, 1.0 is just a number, but it also represents a major milestone in their efforts. The big deal is that this has been a long time coming.
- Purin, on 05/10/2008, -0/+14It'll never be completely "ready," unfortunately.
- ut2k4king, on 05/10/2008, -2/+16Wine

Not an
Emulator! - Echomote, on 05/10/2008, -2/+15You fail.
- BlaenkDenum, on 05/10/2008, -0/+13While you bring up a valid point, you're one of the reasons Linux doesn't take off. Noobs or Average Joes getting used to Ubuntu, feeling proud of themselves for learning a simple command and you come and shatter their hopes by confusing them and making them think that they somehow have to be 'politically correct' when speaking about Linux. Linux is about choice, nowhere do I see a rule saying that whenever I speak of installing a program I /have/ to mention the generic ./configure, make, make install method to make sure all Linux users benefit. I see a lot of elitist Gentoo users go around bragging with 'emerge porn', no one's telling them any different. Ubuntu is arguably the most popular Desktop Distribution, you should be proud that Linux has come this far and that people are even referencing it in the first place. Your methods of installing programs might be different, but in the end we're all Linux users.
- Purin, on 05/10/2008, -3/+16emerge --sync && layman -S
emerge wine - gavintlgold, on 05/10/2008, -1/+14And they want to eat it with wine.
- Giga, on 05/10/2008, -0/+14Surprisingly, there are some Windows apps that are either superior to the Linux ones, and even apps that don't have a counterpart on Linux. Some people wish to use these apps and don't want to be forced to use Windows. They want their cake and want to eat it too.
- ferric84, on 05/10/2008, -14/+26sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade wine - weizbox, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12adobe photoshop cs2? yes, it has been able to for some time now.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... - inactive, on 05/10/2008, -1/+12steve ballmer just ordered a couple new office chairs just so he can throw them
- dualscreenman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12This isn't the preloader error, which I believe you are referring to. This is a much older error that affected just about all DOS programs even before Hardy's new kernel.
- Megatog615, on 05/10/2008, -1/+12Well, one bug fixed in one application might mean a bug fixed in another.
- jerrycan, on 05/10/2008, -3/+14Reconsider College.
- oblique63, on 05/10/2008, -0/+11or just: echo "wine" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
- str1fe, on 05/10/2008, -0/+10It's a smiley. The eye on the left is a scar.

- mithrasinvictus, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9Imagine XP SP3 as equivalent to OSS version 1.0
- kaytrio, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9Wine is really an amazing project. It's the main way I play games.
- mithrasinvictus, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9they forgot to mention the dual boot option and that if you install from the liveCD you can...oh wait, nevermind.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9Thats a huge ***** article. Why doesnt it just say: Go to the BIOS and change the boot device to CD-ROM. then put the cd in and setup windows XP? Oh that right, i forgot windows was all about BLOAT and useless *****, causing major system instabilities, incompatabilites, and insecurities.
