- 4DFX, on 02/09/2008, -3/+38I only wish there was a FF plugin or some sort of tool I could use to automatically digg every wine release.
But then again, Wine is an awsome application and it deserves every click! - ssam, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3597 bugs until 1.0
(up 3 since 0.9.54) - forteller, on 02/09/2008, -0/+30You should add the Wine repository. Then you'll get the newest release just a few days after it's released. Open up a terminal and copy/paste this:
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Read about it here: http://winehq.org/site/download-deb - ThantiK, on 02/09/2008, -0/+25I can't wait 'till they hit 0.9.99 and decide to go with 0.10.01 - oh the hilarity will ensue!
Honestly though, they'll hit 1.0 eventually. Unfortunately (and sometimes FORTUNATELY), that's how linux works. Some programs just never reach the elusive 1.0. They just stay in development for years...and years...and years. - wastedpanda, on 02/09/2008, -4/+27I love you all.
- 000dom000, on 02/09/2008, -3/+23Someone posts a story > People Digg it
Think thats how it works - zzzpoohzzz, on 02/09/2008, -0/+19was anyone complaining about it?
- podgey22, on 02/09/2008, -1/+20Hopefully this'll fix some of the regression-bugs I've been having here (mainly with Adobe Fireworks and some other installers thinking I don't have any RAM)
- shaherazad, on 02/09/2008, -3/+21Sadly, this is the only tech news left on digg.
- srg13, on 02/09/2008, -0/+17You can compile the normal Wine for Mac OS - the reason they don't have packages for it though is probably because they don't have a maintainer for it...
- Eliseo, on 02/09/2008, -4/+19Why does it take so long to update the Ubuntu repositories? The latest there is 0.9.46
- arcticblue, on 02/09/2008, -0/+14Yeah, the Ubuntu team never updates any of the software in their repositories except for adding security patches (example: mythtv doesn't display non-roman characters over the uPnP server. It's been fixed, but I have to wait until Hardon...err Hardy... to get the fix). The best you can do is add the wine repository to synaptic and then you can get the latest version. But, that repository is painfully slow... (even when it's not being dugg)
- etx313, on 02/09/2008, -1/+15Maybe a few years after Microsoft stops developing windows.
- Protoss, on 02/09/2008, -0/+12This guy is correct. Don't bother with the crap Darwine, just download the source and follow the install guide for *nix/BSD systems.
- fredmv, on 02/09/2008, -3/+15Why in the hell don't you just use the OpenOffice.org suite?
- Delta-9, on 02/09/2008, -2/+12Wine Is Not an Emulator
- stalefries, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9Google darwine. Right now, it's not recommended for use (only for developers or something).
If you want a production version of wine for your Mac, look at Crossover. - bj1989, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9There's a project called darwine, the site is a bit outdated but I think this is very useful: http://wine-review.blogspot.com/2008/01/darwine-09 ...
It explains how to get the latest version of wine running on intel macs, a big drawback is that opengl doesn't work. - forteller, on 02/09/2008, -1/+10Oops, sorry, there's one more step. For Ubuntu 7.10:
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d ... -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
For other versions of Ubuntu, go to the website. - eteepell, on 02/09/2008, -1/+9Also on wineHQ site, u can go to "get wine now" on the left, pick ubuntu from the list, and it shows u how to put the repository in synaptic to update from wine repository automagically woot!
- mgenovese, on 02/09/2008, -2/+10Will this ever hit 1.0?
- Smegzor, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8Yay! Another update :D
I have Oblivion running flawlessly. As soon as this update hits my comp, I'll be testing the 1 or 2 games I have that still don't run in WINE. Really hoping Blockland works, and punkbuster! - thushan, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7Cheers!
- closer9, on 02/09/2008, -1/+8Another good torrent program is KTorrent. Works great in Gnome and looks similar to uTorrent.
- swrostmore, on 02/09/2008, -3/+10Forgive the noob question, but the website says Wine allows "many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, ***Mac OS X***, and Solaris." Yet on their download page, no OSX version is listed. Is there an OSX version?
- sat0shi, on 02/09/2008, -2/+9Why ... why would you run uTorrent under Wine in Linux? Why don't you just download a native Linux client like Deluge?
- cyberpear, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6It's not required, as a matter of fact. The only thing that is required is submitting something that is guaranteed to reach the front page (such as a new wine update, or a new kernel release).
- ScottyWZ, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Wine Is Not an Emulator and Lame *Ain't* an Mp3 Encoder.
You were close, though. - CoolGoose, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Because people like their package managers very much. If i'm going to be a masochist and compile all my programs by hand i could just use LFS.
- dualscreenman, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6You should be able to.
- Ademan, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ-zyKR1N2A
Talks about this issue at ~30:00 , it doesn't sound like a fix is in the near future. I believe it also reffers to another presentation that goes into more depth. - dualscreenman, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4I had to virus(ok, adware)-bust TSAdbot a few weeks ago. :(
Fortunately it needed root permissions to do what it wanted to do and the server it calls home to is out of commission. - dualscreenman, on 02/09/2008, -4/+8The Ubuntu people don't take the time to package them all too often. They have lives too I suppose...
- arcticblue, on 02/09/2008, -3/+7Someone posts a story > that person spams the ***** out of it via shouts > stupid "friends" digg it in hopes that the favor will be returned > submitters epeen grows.
I've submitted a few stories and lately I can't get over 5 or 6 diggs. Gaming the system is practically required and I'm not going to do that. - Roryking, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4dugg for "steaming Ronald McDonald"
- shoshumi, on 02/09/2008, -1/+5*sobbing* ...i.. i...love you too man, I love you too...
- DiFosfor, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4You can also install wine with macports. I haven't installed it myself though, so all I can tell you is that it's up to version 0.9.54 and that it will be a port of the linux version using X-windows. It doesn't seem very optimal to me.. two layers, first WINE then X-Windows between windows applications and OS X.. Add to that the problems with X-windows on Leopard (you'll need to install an XQuartz X.org update to fix those) and I wouldn't recommend this.
It is free though. - ThantiK, on 02/09/2008, -1/+5Your not getting my Bud Light Johnny...
- DestroyFascism, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Because everyone runs winblows just to run Adobe apps it seems..
So if wine gets updated, then others can use linux which makes the ability of Windblows look sad....
Linux pwns... - Ellipsys, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Try Deluge or Transmission? KTorrent is also very useful. I don't have too much experience with the first two, but I know that Ktorrent works with little overhead.
- ORBAT, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Because that's how normal users expect things to work.
- etx313, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3You got freetype installed?
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+4Because... why the hell?
There are millions of users of the bigger Linux distros. Why use the processor and user time millions of times over when you can wait for a maintainer to do it? - westyvw, on 02/09/2008, -1/+4Ktorrent is THE best linux client. Active development, great plugins, responsive, overall the best Torrent client on any platform.
- Smegzor, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3I run linux for its better security, no virii, 1 click install/updater, oodles of free software and ability to run Windows apps and games in wine.
Wine is very close to running pretty much anything you could name with few if any problems (my opinion).
I still run XP, but only as a guest OS in VirtualBox. I can run everything I need there except games and I have only two games that don't run in wine, but they generally work perfectly in a matter of weeks, not months. Every wine update sees new apps or games start working. - kahrn, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3Because you don't have a clue about the purpose of package management, do you..?
- deadcrickets, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3Yesno
- srg13, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3I had CS2 working fine - but for some reason it's acting really messed up right now - might be a regression
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3if i start installing by hand, then i can't do "apt-get remove" later if i want to. and if another packagae depends of wine say wine-doors, then i can't apt-get install it. if there is some thing else the package maintainer had to do that I don't know about(like switch directories it installs to) to get it fully working I am screwed. A package managment system keeps track of all the dirs it installs files to... just compiling it and installing it you mihgt forget where are all th places it made files/changes.... PLUS what ever else I dont know about is subject.... I try to install by hand only if there is no other choice. i can wait a day or two for a minor update...
- Protoss, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2Thank you, kind sir.
