- jdhore1, on 11/30/2007, -1/+77Also, this release of Wine is ditching the Windows 98 window decoration style and replacing it with a Win2K (basically XP Classic) style. Personally, i think the new style looks a lot better and Wine is getting VERY close to being extremely usable for me.
- MrSarcasm, on 11/30/2007, -6/+79And remember kids - WINE IS NOT AN EMULATOR.
- dyous87, on 11/30/2007, -3/+39I don't think they can. There is not illegal about what wine has done. It's all open source code from reverse engineering. Nothing is stolen from MS crap code.
- dext3r, on 11/30/2007, -0/+34Theres always that one guy that has to throw this out there for no reason. Thank you.
- Stonekeeper, on 12/01/2007, -1/+32Yes, we do want to know about wine releases.
DUGG. - cenarta, on 11/30/2007, -0/+31I agree. Wine is simply getting better and better with every release. It almost seems like a snowball effect in that as they reverse engineer core Windows services subsequent services get done quicker.
- Dheart, on 11/30/2007, -0/+30Just compiled it myself:
Frozen Throne is finaly working!!!!! No need to use version 0.9.45 :))) - screwattackthis, on 12/01/2007, -1/+30It's not being copied. They're implementing the Windows API into Linux so that we can run applications that are coded for Windows. It's the applications that are.
There's a difference.
Remember, Wine is not an Emulator. - sgoogle, on 11/30/2007, -2/+24Completed I/O Completion.
Nice - inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+22Well it's free.
- sirhomer, on 11/30/2007, -1/+22New Wine release. Dugg.
How close do you guys thing a 1.0 release is? - init100, on 12/01/2007, -0/+21I'd rather read about a new Wine update than about Paris Hilton's latest antics.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+21.0.5 arbitrary units away!
- NerveBand, on 11/30/2007, -1/+20Wow, thats a huge changelog. And Changelog that is huge means progress. And Progress means good. Keep up the good work!
- MikeSD34, on 12/01/2007, -0/+18It may not make much sense grammatically, but it's a great thing. IO completion ports (the high performance socket engine for windows) is a big feature.
- mazza558, on 11/30/2007, -7/+25Will MS ever sue for Wine? I'd hate to see the 1.0 release destroyed by MS's legal department, after all that work...
- ispshadow, on 12/01/2007, -1/+16Yes.
Oh, you haven't noticed that your question gets asked every version?
And also gets immediately dugg down?
Because of the same answer?
Yes. It does. - zzzpoohzzz, on 12/01/2007, -0/+15because linux is a better operating system (at least imo) and a lot of stuff is only written for windows... thats my reasoning at least
- gavintlgold, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14Just to let everyone know, wine can now run Half Life 2 (including HL2 ep. 1, 2), and Portal, Team Fortress 2... actually any Steam app. It runs it perfectly (in Gutsy Gibbon, too). Just make sure you check out the winehq pages for the apps to find the command, since you will most likely need to define DX 8 instead of 9 for it to work smoothly.
Seven thumbs up ;) - FreDre, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14Yes, you can. Check http://appdb.winehq.org/ for compatibilities.
- mooninite, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14WoW has run with Wine since it first came out. I've run WoW under Wine for over a year solid. No issues. Full 3D acceleration and sound. Even the new voice chat works under Wine.
Make sure you have a nVidia card. The Linux ATI driver is still lacking stability and performance. nVidia's driver is extremely stable and as fast (or sometimes faster) as their Windows part. - inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13If WINE is Europe-based it won't be a problem, in Europe reverse engineering is legal (as it should be).
- AlmostEvil, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13Cedega no longer gets code from WINE, the code bases split ever since WINE moved from the X11 license to the LGPL license.
In terms of development WINE is now surpassing Cedega, infact the only thing Cedega has over WINE is the proprietary copy protection stuff that allows it to run certain games that otherwise would require cracks to run under Linux with WINE.
Also, I can't believe I just went through that and edited all the WINE mentions to be uppercase. - zzzpoohzzz, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13i didnt know everything on digg was earth-shattering...
thats news to me - dualscreenman, on 12/01/2007, -1/+14"Every little update" contains lots and lots of changes. ;)
- TehDoctor, on 12/01/2007, -1/+13Outlook!? Give me a ***** break.
- srg13, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12So you're saying that doing something is pointless if you're not paid for it, lohphat?
- dualscreenman, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Windows costs money. A person also may not like Windows (Or likes Linux) better.
Plus most stuff at least works with Wine, (if it doesn't work perfectly :D). - screwattackthis, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Sorry, I left part of the sentence off. Meant to say "It's the applications that are wanted."
- Disfnord, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Wow, with that kind of attitude, I sure hope you never have kids...
- dualscreenman, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12Nobody knows... certainly not until the 1.0.0 target bugs are fixed:
(See bugzilla.winehq.org, the link is long and will probably get chopped up by the comment system) - Kikinou, on 12/01/2007, -1/+12Lim version(wine) = L
x -> 1.0 - tempusrob, on 12/01/2007, -1/+12And if you consider all the wasted cumulative hours of MS *talking* about "interoperability" you could have WINE a few times over. What's your point?
- BlaenkDenum, on 12/01/2007, -2/+13With all this reverse engineering, I'm sure Wine Developers know the Windows API better than many Windows API programmers. Keep up the great job guys!
- init100, on 12/01/2007, -3/+13"There is no greater proponent of system interoperability than Microsoft"
You must be joking. Microsoft is only a friend of interoperability between Microsoft products. - nickcharlton, on 12/01/2007, -1/+11For the last 3 years I have been avoiding WINE, and running a spare Windows box. I always assumed it was too difficult to install, then I read this...http://www.howtoubuntu.com/2007/10/21/how-to-insta ...
Now, I use Ubuntu most of the time, so now I feel embarrassed.. - PsychoBrat, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Buried for giving me false hope.
- gavintlgold, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Wine is actually occasionally faster than Windows. This might be because you don't need virus protection installed, and less processes are running in the background. Also, dual-booting is a hassle, and virtualization is slower (and you need to buy a copy of windows).
- dualscreenman, on 12/01/2007, -1/+11It is usually released twice a month. It is Dugg because each release *does* bring something exciting. You should really check out the enormity of the change log.
- init100, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Let me guess, VirtualDub was based in the US? That's what happens if you allow software patents. Basing FOSS projects in the US is really stupid, at least if you are going to be developing stuff that competes with Microsoft software, as they have probably patented every minor detail of their software.
- Protoss, on 12/01/2007, -1/+10Mac Keychain support? I didn't think they focused on OSX features at all.
- screwattackthis, on 12/01/2007, -1/+10I loled.
- srg13, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9Precisely my thinking - I want the best operating system I can have, and even though it comes with most of the applications I need, I still want to be able to run software that only comes for Windows.
- sarusa, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10I love it, but I really wish they'd get column dragging to work. The one thing that drives me crazy is not being able to reorder columns in apps like uTorrent. Just spams the logs with:
fixme:listview:LISTVIEW_HeaderNotification Changing column order not implemented - DiggerT, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9yes but battle.net stopped working from release 0.9.46 and has been broken since, luckily has now been fixed.
- init100, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9Nothing stops Wine from having two-digit minor versions, so the next minor version update could very well be Wine 0.10.x. The next version after 0.9 does not need to be 1.0. The leading zero usually means that the project managers considers the software to still be in alpha/beta stage. They will probably release version 1.0 when they think that it is more or less "finished", which may never happen since they are chasing the moving target that is the Win32 API/ABI.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9Ubuntu (and plenty of other distros) don't generally update stable packages between distribution releases, they just patch the version that it ships with. That's why it took them a while to get Pidgin in there, the OpenOffice.org is up to three months old, etc. . There may be exceptions (Firefox? They have the alpha in universe, after all.)
If you can't find a deb from someone else you'll have to compile it yourself.
But, probably don't bother unless you absolutely need some features in it, since by the time Hardy rolls around the version that it ships will be much better tested *for Ubuntu* than anything unofficially compiled. - AirRaven, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8You realise that you could change it very easily before? One of the first things I've always done when I install Wine's to change the colour scheme to match my GTK style and load a matching .msstyle skin.
What would be nice would be some kind of GTK wrapper for Wine's themeing system. -
