- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+49Somebody will say why have a story about every single wine version.
But i will digg. :) - YokoZar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38I am building the Ubuntu packages for 32 bit right now, and the 64 bit ones should be available sometime this weekend. They're released to the winehq APT repository as they're uploaded. You can get them here http://winehq.org/site/download-deb (Debian etch is also available).
An important change to the winehq website happened recently without much fanfare: the FAQ has been completely revamped and moved to the wiki. You can see it here: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ
Moving the FAQ to the wiki was a serious change. No one had maintained the old FAQ (hosted in CVS), and the information on it was so out of date it left users even more confused. Within a month after moving it to the wiki, the 7 contributors other than myself had already worked on it, and it is now a downright helpful document. In fact, it worked so well that in the future I'll try migrating other parts of Wine's website to the wiki as well. - jordn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26WINE is making excellent progress. i know i am going to get dugg down for saying this, but i need to use Microsoft Office 2003 on my machine, especially Access for my A-level course. This release has brought even more stability to this program. I have tried OpenOffice, but that is really not my thing.
However, the office 2007 installer runs! :D but craps itself shortly afterwards due to missing call functions.
Keep up the great work guys! - alexdemers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13And you HAD to comment? There's an option in your profile where you can remove topics about Linux/Unix.
- GGIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I know that thinking about this might hurt a little... But maybe, just maybe, there aren't Linux alternatives to certain WinDoze programs (Nearly every game currently out there and tons of homebrew apps fit here) and WINE allows those of us who prefer an open OS to run things we find very appealing, despite the OS barrier.
I'm a big fan of having my cake and eating it, too. - straxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Yes, quickly. 1.0 is just an arbitrary number. The fact that they haven't used it in a release doesn't negate the point about how much has been done, and how quickly work now progresses. Hell, look at MAME. They decided against ever doing a 1.0 version number, both because of the incremental nature of development and because there will always be more to do. Assuming Microsoft continues to update the Windows platform, the same is true for WINE. I don't need a number to see how much has been done in a short time.
- redxii, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Quit yer WINEing.
- gavintlgold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11But I don't WANT to buy windows! :)
- kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I gotta say, it's impressive how quickly WINE is maturing.
I guess once the basic framework is written, it gets easier and easier to implement the remaining functionality. "The hardest part is the first 10%" and what not... - Jon20usa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Thanks Wine team for making such great software that allows me to play Windows games on Linux.
Looks like the Wine website is getting slammed because atm I can't bring it up. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I understand you. you'll see the next $YOUR_AVATAR post in 2012
- sworoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The irony..... if nobody cares, who would digg you down?
Good question, huh? - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8QUESTION: what kind of a loser is so pumped on Microsoft that they use the corporate Windows logo as their Avatar icon? ANSWER: JasonCox. I mean... seriously dude, love Microsoft all you want but at least be a little more subtle about it, it's just ridiculous.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"Another step towards 1.0"
Oblig Wine comment. :) - WebCrusader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Please don't apply your opinion to everyone else. You are just a piece of... the puzzle.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7From my Gentoo days i remember wine used to take a long time to compile even after the ease of portage,
This is power of sharing and open source, Thank you. - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm all about GNU and open source, but for games it doesn't really matter much. They don't have to be open source imo. They're not critical to the idea of freedom, they play no part in the infrastructure of the country/world and they are not important for running/maintaining a business. It just simply doesn't matter much. I want companies to write games for linux, but they don't have to be FREE games.
- nubtard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Look forward to trying it out. Guild Wars runs fairly well now - laggy with compiz, though.
- thushan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5WINE is maturing nicely, Cheers!
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6no way, it would be the world's most monotonous rss feed. Not to mention quite predictable (regular release cycle). 0.9.35 released, 0.9.36 released, 0.9.37 released...
digg is much more entertaining thanks to all the kiddy whiners and know-it-alls. - CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Wow, winehq.org is down. Digg effect FTW
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Why would you get dugg down for that. Schools often suck about what packages they demand. Fortunately I did a Pascal project for my A-Level.
- gavintlgold, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6What the wine team needs to do is add an rss feed to their site. That's ALL they have to do.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4To an extent. The pareto principle is often over used (especially since it can be used in both directions) but applies in this case. Right now there are a mass of programs just waiting for small pieces of functionality to become useful.
- greyfade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5you, sir, need to be agreed with. simply on principle. you are absolutely correct.
- greyfade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i really hope they improved the Alsa driver. it's far too sesitive to failure on AMD64.
- msgyrd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3And the Windows API has been changing constantly that whole time. It's a moving target.
- Shootfast, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5As soon as it came up in the update manager, I was thinking.. "Maybe I should be annoying and submit this update to digg" but alas, I was beaten :P
- jordn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ Alexkorova and anyone else who is interested:
http://thisismyinter.net/?p=11
this guy is manually compiling WINE for Mac OSX. He also provides information to anyone who wants to do it themselves :D - stealthc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You OSS coders and your eight-decimal version numbers...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I care.
- Megatog615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Heh. appdb.winehq.org goes to Codeweavers.
- jasorn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You can't play all windows games on Cedaga. Not even close.
- pplude92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The Windows API is a moving target. It's constantly changing, and I say they have done a damn good job keeping up!
- tetsura, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1any ideas when the site will be back up?
- alexkorova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Anyone have a Mac build? The one I have is .36, so its a bit old. And I dont have the dev tools here, but I am downloading now, will take ages however because of my slow connection.
- whataboutdave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Word up. I have been holding out on a new desktop for a bit until support for Medieval 2: Total War improves under Wine.
I wants me some medieval combat, but I also wants me my Kubuntu. Rock and a hard place. - YokoZar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This isn't quite accurate. Budgetdedicated hosts the APT server at http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/ - the actual winehq.org website is hosted by Codeweavers.
- MeneerR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No its down for maintenance. I actually host a couple of customers at budgetdedicated (the guys that sponsor the winehq server)
They have a pretty spiffy connection. No worries. - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try unredirecting fullscreen windows.
- jasorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That's funny. Wine is about 15 years old.
- KuDoZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Haven't checked on Wine since .38, and Steam was broken. Looks like it's up and functioning, I just hope during the Summer of Code 2007 they sort out all the alsa issues so I can use my mic on CS. Kudos to the Wine team.
- minastirth, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5Great news! I am looking forward to the day I can play all Windows games on Linux. I know there is cedega for this but its not open-source.
- perral1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4...Neither are the games that you're trying to run on it....
- dippyskoodlez, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I would bet Parallels and Vmware Fusion would...
never have anything to do with this. - amrush4th, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2props to the peeps that make this happen, but I choose Linux for reasons other then to run windows apps. If i wanted to run windows apps, it turns out windows does a decent job. If you need the windows environment to get through the day, then run windows, your call. Thats the point of choice, pick what is best for you.
- cquilliam, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1Quickly?? You do realize that WINE has been in development since 1993 right? And it's yet to reach v1.0 right?
I'm not ***** on WINE, i'm just saying. - ProtossX, on 10/11/2007, -18/+0No really nobody does care
BECUZ noBODY CARES enuff to click the comments for this let alone read the article the only ones who did are the few nerds who actually care which juding by how much i was dugg down i'd say around 11 - Idura, on 10/11/2007, -27/+1wine doesn't even work good imo
- ProtossX, on 10/11/2007, -35/+1Hi.
Nobody cares.
Dugg down.
