- sethkinast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Use AmaroK or Rhythmbox instead. Both have excellent support for the iPod, especially AmaroK!
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@7of7: it's already happening. Look at some of the well written replies that have negative diggs. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean you should mod them down. This is why most people shouldn't have mod points. Posts should be modded down if they're trolls, or completely irrelevant to the discussion-- NOT if you disagree with them. Some people just have a hard time grasping that concept.
- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's sad, but Wine's game support is already getting to be as good as/better than Cedega's. Half Life 2, for instance, installs and runs -much- better in Wine. I am very impressed by the improvements in the code for installers. Whatever those Wine hackers changed, it was for the better...installers now seem to run flawlessly.
- Gman1223, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10itunes doesn't work on it :( (not that i like itunes but I'd really like to use my ipod nano in linux)
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If wine's game support keeps increasing, it might just woo me off of Windows. How about you?
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just incane anyone is curious Why they say wine is not an emulator, Wine is a Windows Compatability layer, that tries it's best to copy the Windows API to allow for the running of windows binaries.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the _only_ reason I keep a windows xp install is to play the games that don't run under cedega (winex), but we've got a long way to go before winex can support all windows games, but give it time.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Let us know how its working out please :)
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Amarok 1.4 has PERFECT support for the ipod. It is the 1.3.x versions that have crappy support. They totally redid the ipod support in the 1.4 line.
Amarok 1.4beta1 has been released, if you have an iPod I HIGHLY recommend it. I prefer it to itunes.
http://amarok.kde.org/ - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This new comment system is interesting for sure. I guess it was only a matter of time, but anyone interested in counting how long until all unpopular opinion is quashed on this site? Maybe the software should be leased to China.
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sometimes linux users need a program that runs only in windows. I personally would love for Photoshop to work under WINE. Either way, its NOT an emulator... it says so in its name, hehe.
- Gman1223, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I really don't think that running windows games on Linux is a good idea, what really needs to be done is Port the games over to it
- tremor_tj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5An emulator emulates hardware. WINE is a native rewrite (as best they can anyway) of the win32 libraries necessary to run Windows executables on Linux (or whatever). There's no emulation at all.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it just happened to me, but happened after page reload on 2 comments on which editing had already expired. I'll file a bug report, but the problem seems apparent enough to not need one. http://digg.com/bugreport
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or just use gtkpod.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6If i'm not mistaken, you can mount the ipod on /dev/sda1 (only sda1 if you have no usb flash drives or scsi drives) but i'm not too sure if it works with ipod nano, but works with ipod mini. Try mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/ipod as root (make sure /mnt/ipod directory exists)
- blixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Use AmaroK or Rhythmbox instead. Both have excellent support for the iPod..."
Rhythmbox has read-only support for the iPod. (e.g. you can't make changes.) Not exactly my idea of "excellent support". - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've found that Amarok messes up my iPod when I've used it to update the songs.
It messed up the whole "database" on the iPod once so it thought it didn't have any songs on it. A quick trip to Windows and iTunes fixed it without causing too much of a fuss.
Amarok is a great application though! Definately a Linux killer-app, no doubt about it.
OT, but this new threading and comment digging system, while I find it rather cool, why can't you reply to posts deeper in a thread? Seems to me that you can only reply to the parent. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3... Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Quake, UT2004, Penguin Racer.
What more do you need? - jesterhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amen brother.
There really needs to be some limiting factor on the digging of comments, like say a limit on the number of comment diggs per day, or article maybe. I dunno. Or I guess you could even go the /. route and do a random distribution of digg points. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Definitely anything over -3 diggs should still be visible. Hiding a comment on first negative rating is cheap peer to peer censorship .. huh, kindof.
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Type dmesg in a terminal after connecting the Ipod to the computer and it should show what /dev/sd** entry it is, it will more than likely be sda1 or sdb1, but there is a chance for variance.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nice to see Wine progressing. The more stuff that's compatible with GNU systems (Wine isn't just for GNU/Linux) the more people who will be able to successfully leave Windows, which is always a good thing.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2while its true its not technically an emulator, its also not the same as running native either.
What really amazes me is that they got it to work at all.....def some smart ass people out there.
I was very unimpressed with WINE in the past, but am looking forward to trying this out. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can change your threshold for how low the comments should be for you to see them. Just set it to -2.
- Gman1223, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The only reason I keep windows on is the fact that i have an ATI video card and dont have the money to go and buy an nV
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just like hater2win said, if you need a program (or game) to run in linux that doesnt nativly, you need to run it. and wine is not an emulator....
- Lazaryn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does Photoshop CS or CS2 work with this version?
- CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try the new Amarok 1.4beta1. It has much improved iPod support. (It can sync with most UMS mp3 players too btw)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As cool as the wine project is, more effort needs to be made into pushing developers to port outstanding programs like Photoshop to run natively in linux. I like the gimp, but photoshop has a better feeling.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Now I'd like to really see Darwine progress.
- StringCheesian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Slashdot allows you to mod a comment "Offtopic" or "Troll" so that if you want to mod a comment down you have to pick a good reason for it. But here we have buttons that look like they mean Approve/Agree and Disapprove/Disagree. And you just click one without having to justify it. I think the moderation we're seeing is perfectly understandable given the interface.
- jaschac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as I like the new system for it's ease-of-use, this is an outstanding example of the problem you mention.
I completely agree with your post, so I should +digg you, right? Or not? Though i agree, your post (and my reply) are *wildly* off-topic for this thread. So -digg, right? or not?
I, for one, like systems that like +digg/-digg, but also give the +/- some context ("interesting", "funny", "off topic", etc). Yeah, kinda' slashdotty, but it *is* helpful.
Great system here, just needs some tweaking. - TimTim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That to me is the definition of an emulator!
- gr00vy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I want Fritz on OSx... On a macbook. Hopefully this is one more step to get me there.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wine is a great idea, but what I really want to see is the OSX / Windows Universal Binary!
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Need 0.0.1 more!
- zsf555, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Okay, WHY would anybody want a Windows Emulator?!?!?
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need my RTS fix.
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@JimXugle:
You forgot about dunnet!
I tried to run it, but my graphics card couldn't handle it. - reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Counter Strike worked beautifully for me under 0.6. Now it's really sluggish. I haven't tweaked with the settings yet.
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exactly.
- Gman1223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@zaofreek uhhh how did you get the new steam on wine?
- vidalinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use banshee :) nice Ipod support in Linux
- spudnik187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It seemed to me that this project was stagnant for the longest time, however, it seems like it has picked up a lot of steam over the past little while. This is a great thing in my opinion.
- jarvisdafreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I still haven't gotten the old wine to work! Must. Try. Again
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4no, but you can manually transfer the mp3's, pictures, etc to the ipod after mounting. Just find the directory on the ipod that has all the mp3's in it and copy what you want over. I'm no ipod tech, but it should logically work. I know when i was playing with a friend's ipod mini, i plugged it into knoppix and it was identified as a usb storage device and granted me read/write access.
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It still has it bugs. Just ignore it I'm sure they will fix that soon.
It works fine for me what browser are you using? I'm using Firefox 1.5 - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0get either gtkpod, or amarok 1.4beta1 (1.3 doesn't work well with ipods) to put songs on an ipod if you use a linux desktop.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awesome! Not complete though. Was windows complete when windows 1.0 came out?
