- neko, on 07/02/2008, -7/+95This is the problem with Digg these days. Everyone defines themselves by what they hate.
( I hate it sooo much! :D ) - toxicityj, on 07/03/2008, -7/+76if you're dishing out $300 for your OS, you're buying it at the wrong place...
- ToadLeg, on 07/02/2008, -30/+73buried as stupid nonsense
- bokep, on 07/03/2008, -4/+41What's with the hate? We get to choose our own OS, and that's awesome.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -29/+56linux is still undeveloped.
admit it.
you spend half the time to tweek something or get some functionality that in windows works as-is.
the fact that companies do not support linux does not make it different. life may suck but that's the way it is.
the main reason minimalism elitism exists in linux is that its users are not brave enough to admit they don't like minimalism, they're just forced to it. - aftern9ne, on 07/03/2008, -12/+38I bought an $800 Vista machine that can do all the ***** I would ever want to do. Nobody cares what OS you hate.
- s0m31john, on 07/03/2008, -18/+43People buy Windows?
- rofflecopter, on 07/03/2008, -13/+38This is pretty dumb, and pretty inaccurate.
- youareretarded, on 07/03/2008, -6/+30I find it funny that the author complains of a bare minimum OS, yet everyone complains when MS tries to bundle anything with it.
I don't mind though, half the stuff out there that comes preinstalled on most OS's are garbage anyway. - schnikies79, on 07/03/2008, -4/+21Damn, I know. I mean, hell, it took me 30 seconds to fire up a browser and download utorrent.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -14/+31The main advantage to me is not having to run anti virii/spyware programs, or even have them installed. Thats extra cpu and memory that can be used for other programs. Windows indexing is lame compared to spotlight on osx, really spotlight is amazing , its a prized feature for me because of how fast it is. Searching for windows drivers is no fun, when its a dell and you search the model only to find they made 6 or 7 different drivers for the same model/hardware . Linux picks it all up, no drivers needed. I don't miss installing a driver/reboot/install/reboot , why must windows always restart/reboot, that needs to stop.
- wrenchone, on 07/03/2008, -1/+17Windows just cannot win. It doesn't come with a good photo or video editor, and people call it under featured. If it came with an good photo and video editor, people would scream monopoly.
- CheeseNRice, on 07/03/2008, -14/+29You really should get the sand out of your vag..
- Canadian0207, on 07/03/2008, -10/+25Inaccurate indeed.
1) Why is he complaining about 300 for an office suite? That has nothing to do with Windows. You can get openoffice for windows too.
2) Personal anecdote - but I have Vista and never had a driver problem
3) 20 minute install with Linux and you can do all of that? Yeah ***** right!! Tell any avg computer user to do that and they can't. You gotta hand it to M$. For what it is, they've made their OS easy to use, and free to use with any hardware (see: OSX) - Dalrek, on 07/03/2008, -2/+16I wouldn't say it's stupid nonsense, but multiple parts do not make sense. If I buy a new computer, why would I not have it come with Vista pre-installed? Also, it is not a 45 minute install. It really is just 20 or so. And what kind of esoteric hardware are you getting in a pre-built vendor computer that doesn't have Vista driver support, anyways?
Also, Home Premium and Ultimate (which you better be getting Ultimate for $300 which is retardedly overpriced anyways) can play DVDs straight up. No, Vista doesn't come with every program under the sun, and it's okay that way. The option to get everything so quickly and easily in Linux is great, but why do I have to buy Office for Vista when I can get OpenOffice? (And yes, I do understand that Office is more powerful than OpenOffice.) - charlesray, on 07/03/2008, -10/+24"Picture this, you just bought built a brand new computer and want to install the brand spankin’ new Windows Vista Ultimate, you plop down $300, and away you go! What does $300 get you? A bare minimum operating system with nothing but MS Paint and Media Player."
I stopped reading here. They can't even include Media Player in some countries because of antitrust laws. Don't complain about something that, legally, they can't do anything about.
Oh I read a little further. This article is a joke. I've used every version of Windows since 3.11, I've used nearly every version of Linux, two of the three big versions of BSD, and occasionally OS X, and never once have I had any problem that he relates. I know he is specifically talking about Windows, but I mention the other OS's because he is describing a scenario that simply does not exist. - and303, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15If people used their operating systems instead of parading it around the internet...well...the world would be a bit less annoying.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -8/+20Ya.
Except that it does detect all my hardware. And works fine. - manacit2, on 07/03/2008, -1/+11That's the first thing I thought too, if I actually had to *pay* for windows I wouldn't use it
- Vorsuc, on 07/03/2008, -4/+14>"Proof that you've never used Linux."
Or that you've spent far too many hours swearing at Ubuntu's past wireless WPA/WEP problems..
Linux is *great* if you're not afraid to dive in, screw with config files and tinker. The frequent updates and enchanced security is great as is the low resource usage.
It is all but useless for anyone 'scared' of computers, or who doesn't want to mess and those users, for better or worse, make up the majority. - RetroEvolute, on 07/03/2008, -4/+14Third comment down in the comments on the original article posted by Dak:
"You’ve made some very valid points about Windows Vista. But who really buys the Operating System, stand alone? The vast majority of Vista sales go with new computers, not a separate OS purchase. So by buying a new system installed with Vista you get many other goodies, such as the ability to burn cd/dvd’s, movie maker, and sometimes an evaluation version of MS Office. No, it’s not great, but it is nice to be able to bring home a new system and be up and running in minutes and be productive.
So while you made some very valid points as I said, it doesn’t make them 100% right, does it? I think that only a fool would go out and drop $300 for a version of Vista to install on their system, without first thinking the drivers issue through. Even brand new hardware isn’t supported by Vista, so is it really a surprise that some older hardware may not be supported too? I think Linux shares some of these issues with new hardware as well.
As for Linux, when I encounter issues, I use google to find solutions. Gee, I think Windows users do this too. Why I bet even Mac users have to use google once in a while. Why is it that Linux Advocates think searching google for Windows answers is so horrible, when Linux users have to use google for solutions too?
The logic used in this arguement fails to make its point, but it does speak very loudly, that you think anyone using Windows is nuts. That’s not advocacy, that’s flaming, and do we really need to continue the flaming OS wars any longer?
I see many advocates preaching the “freedom of choice” yet Windows users are blasted because Linux users seem to hold the opinion that Windows users are dumb and second class citizens. If it is a choice, then shouldn’t it be a users choice, and not have their decision made for them and crammed down their throat?
For my notebook, I have Vista installed, which came with the notebook. I’ve not had a bit of trouble with it on my Dell notebook, but I can’t really say that about Linux on my notebook. I’ve had issues up the ying-yang with it, until I installed Kubuntu. Now I have a dual boot notebook, with my primary OS as Vista.
My desktop is a different story. I have Linux and only Linux running it on it. My server? Linux again. My media server? Linux once again. Those are my decisions. I made a choice between Windows and Linux on various computers. It’s a choice that I made, not a choice that some “Windows-flaming, I’m superior because I use Linux, you should listen to me because I’m right and you are so wrong” Linux advocate forced down my throat.
I consider myself an “Interoperability Advocate” in that Windows and Linux (and other OS’s) can (and do)work together very well. It galls me to see articles like “10 Reasons Windows Sucks” or “10 Reasons You Should Use Linux.” Why does it gall me? Because the arguments presented are generally very weak in nature. To say Linux is not affected by viruses is a myth, along with the myth that Linux does not crash. I dare say that I have crashed Linux on my notebook more than Vista has crashed on my notebook.
So instead fanning the flames of the OS War, why not try to present that Windows and Linux can co-exist with each other? In the words of Rodney King during the LA riots “Can’t we all just get along?”

Just thought it should be posted here as well. I completely agree with this comment. - atbnet, on 07/03/2008, -7/+18Who the ***** spends $300 on Vista? Home Premium is just $99 OEM on Newegg.
- Aero347, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10I got Windows via bit torrent >.> i'm sure they love the protocol
- elmetald00d, on 07/03/2008, -3/+13install flash
- maggotsan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9I have nothing against Linux, but this article was clearly not written by someone who knows windows.. I would say that he's wrong on almost every point, except for movie maker.. For example:
Vista loads in about 20 min's
office in about 10-15 max
loading drivers is much simpler; downloading the latest drivers is just good practice
just a few points. - MikeSetera, on 07/03/2008, -5/+14***** dude, nobody's forcing you to use every application bundled with OS X. I never touch iLife. I love Leopard for its clean interface, speed, and reliability.
- Aero347, on 07/03/2008, -1/+9I love the comment system.

or, to save you the trouble: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree - hydroxic, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8 Yes. Yes, they are.
Also, your average user [not Digg user, mind you] probably doesn't use BitTorrent (or even know what it is, for that matter).
I'm not a a Linux hater or anything either. In fact, I mostly use Linux distros and OS X (Windows for gaming). - Ellipsys, on 07/03/2008, -3/+10Depending on your needs, you should in all seriousness consider a Linux distribution. Even the most bloated Linux distros are far more streamlined than Windows or OSX. If you really want to customize and pick and choose exactly what features you like, I suggest an "advanced" or source based linux distro like Arch (my recommendation, because it has a package manager and dependency checker, while being on a rolling release schedule), Gentoo (BSD style packaging), or Slackware (The "original, advanced" Source based, minimal hand holding). When booting up Arch for the first time, you have a kernal, a command line, and not much else. The rest, is your choice.
- 1337jared, on 07/03/2008, -9/+16I cant figure out how to watch youtube videos in Ubuntu yet...
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8I really don't understand some of this guys points. First of all, when Vista was released they didn't have support for every driver but that's been fixed. Sure there may be something here or there that doesn't work with Vista, but the same can be said for any OS. Then he complains that Windows comes with MS Paint. I agree that MS Paint is nothing more than a child's toy, but I don't really need an OS to come with a bundled paint program, there's plenty to choose from, some free some not. Windows doesn't burn an audio cd? I just burned one yesterday in Windows Media Player. Wasn't the big complaint in the '90's about how Microsoft was evil because they bundled Internet Explore with Windows, and then they bitched about Windows coming with too much crap, now he's whining that it doesn't have enough. Is it really a determining factor in your choice of OS if it comes with a torrrent app? Im not a MS fanboy, but his complaints are pretty silly. I tried Linux, and I didn't like it. I know, I'll get buried for saying it, but it was a huge pain in the ass to install anything. I tried to install Firefox 3, but it wouldn't install by clicking on the install file, so I tried the manual install, and did it exactly as described in the Ubuntu forums, but whenever I tried I kept getting error messages. Is it really that hard to make an OS that installs files just by clicking them? I know, they have 48 different types of Linux, so that's why you have to possess 1337 skillz to install anything not prepackaged. Linux is great, if you like it, same for Windows and Mac OS. The author of the rant seems too bitter that people don't share his particular taste in OS so he spewed a bunch of nonsense about Windows that everyone knows is not true. That is the difference in his rant and the one he is responding to. The original article had valid criticisms about Linux, not made-up *****.
- Clark, on 07/03/2008, -5/+12Actually, Vista comes with a fairly good reproduction of iCal, and iPhoto. He didn't mention that you don't --have-- to install office. OpenOffice works just fine. Dvix and DVD codecs are easy to download. Heck, Ubuntu doesn't even come with those, does it? This is a poorly written ranted argument that some linux lover obviously made without knowing a damn thing about Vista. Clearly, all he reads is the propaganda.
Burrried.
EDIT: *Goes back to using OS X, grabs some popcorn, and is prepared to watch the fanboys battle* - NotOptium, on 07/03/2008, -3/+10Took me a couple reads to figure out what it was you were saying.
It wasn't worth the effort. - P373Y, on 07/03/2008, -2/+8it looks like you need to go back to dos.
also, vista is more glossy than osx, its programs are more flashy than in osx. leopard will run fine with 1gb of ram, and vista wont. that addresses two gripes about osx, now the rest
vista has a program to do practically the same thing that bundled osx program does
itunes-windows media player
quicktime-windows media player
iphoto-windows photo gallery
imovie-windows movie maker
idvd-windows dvd maker
address book-windows contact
front row-windows media center
internet explorer-safari
ical-windows calender
mail-windows mail
dashboard-windows sidebar
dvd player-windows media player
spotlight-windows search
expose-3d flip
time machine- windows backup
ichat-windows messenger
calculator-calculator
and then there's the programs that your talking about, you know the ones that are bundled with osx and not windows.
Dictionary
garageband
iweb
spaces
so in summary, you hate osx because of dictionary, garageband, spaces, and iweb. - digifuzz, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7All I've ever had to do is point firefox to youtube.com. Within moments of clicking on a link therein, the "Additional plugins are required.... bla bla" popup magically slides down and I "Click here" where it tells me to. Then it gives me an option of two or three flash players, Non-free, gnash, and something else. I click non-free (sue me)... (on second thought, dont), it installs, and then.... well... then it plays....
So why's that so complicated? - newms32, on 07/03/2008, -2/+8Anyone with this mindset doesn't belong anywhere except behind a computer.
- Spr0k3t, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6They've got a $98 special going on at Home Depot... includes install!
- cubee, on 07/03/2008, -3/+9"So after you get installed you try to use the Internet and realize that it didn’t detect any of your hardware (video, audio, network), so you spend the next 2 hours spidering through multiple vendor’s websites who all have their downloads/driver section in different areas."
This is so old, I am tired of hearing this crap. It is not true, and anyone that has installed vista knows that this crap. I have never faced the problem of spending 2 hours looking for drivers. Vista supports all the computers i have installed it on right of the bat. Maybe all i have to do is download the new Nvidia Drivers. Buts that it. - deadbaby, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5This article brings up an excellent point. Installing _any_ OS yourself is fairly difficult for most people (with the exception of OSX where the hardware is controlled and a known commodity) I've never thought it was very fair to criticize Linux for a difficult install process when it really is easier than installing Windows these days. If you were to buy a computer with a pre-installed OS, linux or windows, it's a non-issue.
- BananaGrabber, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6The thing is Windows would probably be hit with some monopoly related lawsuits if they include all those programs.
- tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5If it came with a free open source one, then companies (like Adobe) would still bitch about it. If they did, it at the very least wouldnt be allowed to be installed per default.
- nedzeve, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Poor Microsoft. They have it so hard.
- Coy0te, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Yeah, apparently Microsoft is one of the biggest companies on earth, who knew they got like that through software sales....
- JSavage37, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Vista ultimate 64-bit is selling for 174.99 on newegg. So, uh...yeah. Office costs 300, but openoffice is free for windows, too. This "article" (and by that, I mean a rant written by a clearly unqualified writer) sucks my dick. Buried.
- tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Not really. Microsoft would still be sued.
Lets say they were to include an antivirus, and they chose to include Norton AV. The other companies like McAfee and TrendMicro wouldnt just sit by and do nothing about it.
Distros like Ubuntu could do it because the software that they're including is (most often) under an open license. - Sryden42, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Great point, glad someone said it.
- kipmartin, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5all the horrible ***** in the world and you get all wrapped around the axle over this? what, your Adderall wearing off?
get a grip. we OSX fans like BSD access, stripped down apps bundled with the box (and easily removed), and reliable hardware. there is good to be found in all user interfaces. if you like what you have, use it and dont have a hissy fit over something so inconsequential over what i use. i dont care wtf you like, why is it so important for you to care about what i like? - VinceNoir, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5Actually everyone so far is wrong. The reason I prefer Linux to WIndows is that it allows me to do so many things that are custom with no programming experience at all. If Windows could do this then I would be able to use CMD to write some PVR script, export a DVD, display or audio over the network, etc... Windows is terribly lacking in the area of software development tools for non-programmers. Stuff that SHOULD be part of the OS by default. If I was stuck with Windows, I wouldn't have been able to use the DVD drive in my laptop as the local drive for my media center over 802.11g. When Microsoft can allow me to do that without having to learn how to ***** program in Visual Studio or install Cygwin then I might consider that they've evolved to a mature OS.
- aussieNickuss, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Only if you install it fresh yourself.
