You poor naive... :) - matroska1, on 07/06/2009, -12/+340Pretty good no-story. Someone who doesn't use their computer outside of a web browser and doesn't even have use for Office applications is able to open a browser on linux, windows, or mac, amazing. Buried.
- TheMu, on 07/08/2009, -13/+159FTA: "He lives in a web browser. The underlying OS is irrelevant."
So Windows 95/98/ME/XP is just the same as Ubuntu, with some different fonts? I call ***** on his reasoning. - suntzusputnik, on 07/08/2009, -19/+140who cares what an average 17 year old thinks. his opinion is obviously fail
- techdever, on 07/08/2009, -1/+88With a title like that, flamewar is inevitable
/puts on helmet - toastjam, on 07/08/2009, -0/+85If all you use is Firefox, the underlying OS IS fairly irrelevant. Not identical, just irrelevant.
- matthekc, on 07/06/2009, -24/+99No, Ubuntu comes with excellent security mechanisms some of which are even on by default.
- MCA2142, on 07/08/2009, -9/+79"Windows 7 is the same as Ubuntu. Obviously, this isn’t true." = We got you to click on the article.
"Their underlying architectures are quite a bit different, Gnome looks different than the 7 UI, etc., BUT TO AN AVERAGE 17 YEAR OLD, there just wasn’t any meaningful difference between the two operating systems."
JUST WOW. An average 17 year old can tell the difference between a lot of things. Probably a lot more than this clown who wrote this highway accident, which he's calling an article. - sapd, on 07/08/2009, -0/+61FTA: "He lives in a web browser. The underlying OS is irrelevant. He has no need for Office 2007 and..."
For anyone falling under such category they all look the same. Atleast, that's what I think the author implied. - rednaxela825, on 07/07/2009, -107/+162"Windows 7 is the same as Vista"
Fixed your title. - Chirp08, on 07/08/2009, -0/+54What you mean you don't trust a non-techy 17 year old kid's decision? He browses the web and uses meebo, clearly he is the decider.
- Rodik, on 07/08/2009, -8/+57lol!
but actually, "Windows 7 is what Vista should have been"
i'm sorry, but microsoft finally stopped being "microsoft" to me.... they just started doing things right. - greatblackowl, on 07/08/2009, -5/+53Huh. Never thought of it that way.
Windows: "My dick gets more game than your dick."
Mac: "My dick has fewer viruses than your dick."
Linux: "My dick is harder to work on than your dick." - superdigg, on 07/08/2009, -8/+50The reason I plan on getting Windows 7 is just that it runs much better than Vista does. It's more streamlined, less of a system hog, and by getting rid of most of the compatibility problems that plagued Vista x64, it gives everyone a great reason to finally make the jump to 64-bit. That's worth 50 bucks to me!
- eanbowman, on 07/08/2009, -0/+42It's every nerd's favourite dick-waving contest. You think we'll give it up like that?
hahahahaha - Zomaian, on 07/08/2009, -1/+38Pretty sad he is 17 and he only uses the web browser? Wow...
- jakereilly, on 07/08/2009, -5/+42...but to an average 17 year old, there just wasn’t any meaningful difference between peanut butter and KY.
- Papsie, on 07/08/2009, -6/+42Have you used it? Windows 7 is excellent.
- WoollyMittens, on 07/08/2009, -3/+39Too bad you didn't take time to elaborate.
- Chakat, on 07/08/2009, -2/+36As the article states, because it's showing that for the newer generations, the OS is increasingly irrelevant, which is exactly what MS is terrified of. When 90% of your apps are online, what difference does the operating system make?
- theaceoffire, on 07/08/2009, -0/+33Ha, that is exactly what the fire EXPECTS you to do!
/wraps in bacon, covers with brandy
NOW I am prepared! Fire, you have been outwitted! - techdever, on 07/08/2009, -10/+41this is stupid. The kid doesn't know what's the difference between a browser page and a native application? and he's 17yrs old? in 2009?
- damack, on 07/08/2009, -1/+31I agree with you but I think this carries a lot of weight for the twitter/facebook and email crowd.
A lot of people don't use anything other than the internet on their computers. Majority of people would take a low powered cheap system with a free OS that just allows them to check their emails and facebook status updates.
The hardware side is already feeling the pinch with desktop sales plummeting and netbook sales roaring on. It's only a matter of time before somebody invents a streamlined OS to run on netbooks that is free and provides the basic functions people require. - MerchantofPanic, on 07/08/2009, -9/+39His son mustn't be a big gamer...
Or he's just completely given up on gaming since dad pushed him into using Ubuntu... - undervalued, on 07/08/2009, -1/+30flames get everywhere, a helmet is of limited protection
/wraps self in fire blanket, holding extinguisher - duckyinc, on 07/08/2009, -0/+26So every OS copies each other? Why thank you ZDNet I never knew that.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 07/08/2009, -4/+29To the average 17 year old all the computer needs is a "give me porn" button.
- techdever, on 07/08/2009, -5/+30So you are comparing Ubuntu 9.04(released in 2009) to Windows XP (released almost a decade ago). Try installing windows 7 on it to be fair.
- Tarl, on 07/08/2009, -7/+31"Windows 7 is what Vista should have been from the start"
FTFY - bagelmaster, on 07/08/2009, -1/+24I've been using 64-bit for the last 3 years or so with XP 64-bit. Real men tough out ***** technology. (Yes I'm bitter)
- Leviathan433, on 07/08/2009, -1/+24Yeah - by using a single data sample...
- theaceoffire, on 07/08/2009, -1/+23^_^ Welcome to Chrome OS!
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing ... - WiseGuy1020, on 07/08/2009, -5/+26Or he has a gaming console...............like most kids.
- techdever, on 07/08/2009, -2/+23WiseGuy1020: What are you, some kind of wise guy ?
- phatbyte, on 07/08/2009, -4/+24WTF ? His article is not about OS's , is about web browsers..
And Zune ? ***** that, of course it will run better on windows...why ? BECAUSE IT WAS MADE BY FREAKING MS !
And when I was 17 I would tell the difference, with 17 I was already porting some of my C++ code to linux <> windows... so yeah, with 17 we pretty know a lot more sh** then you think - crilen007, on 07/08/2009, -8/+28No, iTunes sucks.
- fretslide, on 07/08/2009, -0/+20Social Media is responsible for this *****
- 0xception, on 07/08/2009, -1/+20In respects to wine i do have to comment that is has come a LONG way, in fact i just recently gave the windows 7 demo a spin and I was actually impressed that it didn't suck. However it lacked so many of the productivity applications and features that linux has built in and in compiz fusion that i gave it up and went back to linux (ubuntu 9.04 laptop, fedora 11 desktop, centOS and FreeBSD on home server). Not only that but while i had windows 7 loaded up i figured i would get my old school gaming on and attempt to play Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, some Diablo II and Never Winters Nights. However not one of these applications installed and ran, every one of the broke. So i rebooted, loaded up ubuntu, found all my hardware (just like windows 7 did to be fair), installed, put the CD's in for the games and each one installed w/ out any hassle directly from CD to disk, no patching, no hacking and no configuration editing. so i have to hand it to wine to accomplish what windows 7 couldn't do in compatibility
- smacksaw, on 07/08/2009, -1/+20So I guess Google's new Chrome OS will really make this an interesting conversation at this guy's house in a year.
- Rodik, on 07/08/2009, -21/+39I disagree with this article on so many levels.
- Rev0lver, on 07/08/2009, -5/+23Such blatantly ignorant statements as this make me want to bang my head against a wall for an hour. So ***** stupid.
- zer0mass, on 07/08/2009, -2/+20"It's only a matter of time before somebody invents a streamlined OS to run on netbooks that is free and provides the basic functions people require."
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Official_Google_Blog_In ... - DrWarm, on 07/07/2009, -26/+44But but (stammers) we changed the task bar!
- CanadaMan87, on 07/08/2009, -3/+21iTunes is a huge dealbreaker for Linux. Not because it's a great program, but because it's the ONLY program for the iTunes music store. Plus the average consumer won't want to try some weird third party program to sync their iPod.
- pagno, on 07/08/2009, -2/+20Libraries are a nice feature, especially if you dont install everything on C:.
- rolf, on 07/08/2009, -6/+23Except for the whole working-nearly-flawlessly-and-hassle-free-with-Windows-apps thing. (Through no fault of Linux, just a reality of the market. And no, wine isn't there yet but it got a lot better.)
- uberduger, on 07/08/2009, -1/+17In before fanboys!!!
EDIT: Whoops. No I'm not. - MacParrot, on 07/08/2009, -1/+17"The old Windows vs. vs. Mac vs. Linux debate may finally be dead"
It isn't a debate but a frigging jihad. A debate would be a pleasant change of pace - MacParrot, on 07/08/2009, -0/+16I know you're trying to be funny but just like Billy Mays, this meme is dead.
- zoomaKabu, on 07/08/2009, -0/+15Yeah, Grandma can't tell the difference either.
