- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -3/+135No no no. Nothing is a Windows killer, nothing is a Linux killer, nothing is an OS X killer. Will you flamebots please stop destroying the Internet?
- WhereAmI, on 01/12/2009, -6/+112It's not up to Microsoft or the GNU/Linux community to make your drivers. Its up to the manufacturer.
- crackedlogic, on 01/13/2009, -3/+78Why does everyone say that one program will "kill" another? You can't kill Linux. That doesn't even make sense.
- dikky, on 01/13/2009, -26/+92windows 7 should be a free upgrade for windows vista users
this will help microsofts image 1000000000000% and will help secure the OS future - ThantiK, on 01/12/2009, -73/+120Micosoft Windows Vista Millennium Edition.
- gwhardyiv, on 01/13/2009, -2/+49You can't kill free.
- Jonmad17, on 01/13/2009, -3/+42I just want it to be under $150. Windows Vista was way too expensive.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/12/2009, -8/+47I installed Windows 7 this weekend and gave it a try - I have to say, it was a lot more robust than I thought it would be. And though it'll never reach the level of customization that comes with the open-source nature of Linux, the extra eye-candy and renewed focus on customer satisfaction could go a long way in restoring the brand. I expect that if Windows 7 gains traction early on, it'll push a little on current sales of Linux computers (and probably Apple as well). They do have a lot of ground to make up however (especially in renewing peoples' interest in WIndows after Vista), so it'll be interesting to watch what happens.
- Drahkar, on 01/13/2009, -2/+32It was a Joke, no matter how accurate it is in reference to the release version of Vista.
Regardless there is no such thing as a Linux Killer. The only way they could 'Kill' Linux would be to release it all for free. Since they will never do that, Linux will ALWAYS be around in one form or another. - Airjoe, on 01/13/2009, -5/+33Better question: Why use both?
- kd420, on 01/12/2009, -7/+32That's funny, I have only heard rave reviews (my main OS is Ubuntu btw). How about an actual argument (there are a ton of arguments you could make that Linux > Windows) instead of a blatant fanboy comment.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -12/+36Maybe Windows7 is good, but dealing with Microsoft is not. I doubt its open enough to dislodge Linux from the server side.
- deweyhewson, on 01/13/2009, -21/+45Have you even used it?
- depro9, on 01/13/2009, -24/+48Windows 7 it's great, just give up your freedom to an abusive global mega corporation. I'm sure this will end in your favor.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -1/+23Yeah, if they pull the $400 game again, they will once again be horribly disappointed. Did anyone ever think that COST maybe played a huge part in the failure that was Vista? If it aint broke, dont fix it, expecially if it comes at a cost of $400.
- Linkin4, on 01/13/2009, -6/+27This turd has been going through every Windows 7 post and saying this, word for word. Average Troll, nothing more.
- sauron256, on 01/13/2009, -9/+30Dugg because it's a pleasant change from "Is 2009 the year of Linux?" stories.
- motang, on 01/13/2009, -7/+28Why not use both?
- plaguepony, on 01/13/2009, -7/+28God forbid it takes away Linux's 3% hold in the user OS department
- Haroldx, on 01/13/2009, -11/+31Oh please. You have to be kidding me. Linux has never obtained a sufficient amount popularity to be a "Windows killer." I'm definitely not being biased, I'm saying this as a constant Linux user since 2004. Linux has all the tools at its hands but the userbase just has not gotten there yet. Give Linux at least another three to four years before it even gains any kind of ground in the OS battle. Even with the comeback of Apple's Mac OS, it is still hardly a "Windows killer."
- gcnaddict, on 01/13/2009, -5/+25Everything is being touted as an everything-killer now. Linux is even being touted as an Apple-killer, even though Apple's on a *nix kernel (*points at Android v. iPhone)
- astyguy, on 01/12/2009, -32/+51I have lots of old hardware i.e TV Card, DVB Card, Flat bed scanner etc which I would like to use, but they are no longer "Vista" compatible. I can force Vista to use them using the XP compatibility mode but no long term support or bug fixes for the future. When Windows 7 comes out I would expect my old hardware to no longer work. Therefore the only path which will support my old hardware for the longer term is Linux .... Microsoft you are going to lose a lot of customers if you don't listen to their needs
- lowtolerance, on 01/13/2009, -3/+22@ThankiK: Windows 7 is beta, so problems are too be expected. Better to find them out now than once the product ships. And don't pretend like the fact that "A LOT OF" files have the same MD5 hash actually matters. Companies aren't in the business of reinventing the wheel. If a DLL or executable does exactly what is needed, then leave it the ***** alone. No one is touting Windows 7 as a completely new OS. It's well known that it's essentially Vista(which in my experience, is a pretty solid OS) with some needed UI improvements.
- fivex, on 01/13/2009, -0/+19so flamebots are the Internet-killers!
- FredFredrickson, on 01/12/2009, -6/+25Exactly. But my question is, why not just leave XP on the machine if that's what works? Why keep upgrading, and why bother switching to Linux) if you already have a working setup that doesn't need to change?
- fyngyrz, on 01/13/2009, -3/+20> Regardless there is no such thing as a Linux Killer.
> The only way they could 'Kill' Linux would be to
> release it all for free.
...and by "all", he means:
o The OS
o The drivers for the OS
o The applications for the OS
o The source code for the OS
o The source code for the drivers
o The source code for the applications
o The licensing for the OS
o The licensing for the drivers
o The licensing for the applications
o The documentation for the OS
o The documentation for the drivers
o The documentation for the applications
...but even all that wouldn't kill Linux unless the OS was so much better as to make Linux irrelevant. Considering that Linux is presently the first choice for anyone in the know for putting up a webserver or a medium database server, it isn't likely to happen in the foreseeable future. - jmdsdf, on 01/13/2009, -9/+25How can Windows, a closed source, proprietary, expensive operating system possibly kill Linux which is open source, open standards and free? The life of Windows is finite. In the long term, once the advancements Microsoft makes in each generation of the Windows operating system slows down, and Linux catches up, it will be absolutely demolished. I'm not sure how long it will take (a few years? a couple decades?), but it will happen. I'm not saying Gnu/Linux is better than Windows in practice right now, but the gap is ever closing.
- thal3s, on 01/13/2009, -8/+23Desktop or Server?
* Desktop: There's nothing to kill - nobody except us nerds will install or use Linux on the desktop - either at home or work (corporations using desktop linux=0)
* Server: Are you serious? Hell no. Linux, like UNIX, is a culmination of the best CS has to offer - and has been before BillG ever made a dollar. It's reliable as hell, it's scheduling system is damn-near fail-proof, on-and-on. Windows is getting better, but it does not beat Linux head-to-head on robustness, uptime, cost, etc. A polished Vista SP2 is not going to change the math.
So, what was the point of this article again? - xerigen, on 01/13/2009, -5/+19I'm using windows 7 right now and I like it a lot. If linux could handle Photoshop and a couple of other programs that I use a lot smoothly, I'd use linux exclusively.
I have Ubuntu, XP and W7 all loaded. I should add, though, that once the beta runs out, I don't plan on paying to upgrade to windows 7 and will probably just keep Ubuntu and XP. Linux still has the upper hand on price obviously. - poisenloaf, on 01/13/2009, -3/+17lol only a matter of time before we are saying that about Google.
- Phocion55, on 01/13/2009, -0/+14Win7 comes preinstalled with Powershell, which is actually a fairly cool feature.
Something I HOPED was going to ship with Vista as announced, but didn't. - Hermmunster, on 01/13/2009, -3/+17Microsoft is a criminally convicted monopolist, not just in the US but also in Korea, the EU, and I believe one other.
Microsoft is a monopolist. This has been upheld in the courts. Monopolies are bad and a monopoly doesn't have to worry about their image. That makes his logic correct and your's and the prior person's logic flawed. - Kazbaeden, on 01/13/2009, -2/+16@Hermmunster
Please enumerate for us these 47+ programs and how they spy on you. I'm interested in what you come up with. - Phate8263, on 01/13/2009, -2/+15Too bad Linux is going the same way in some areas.
The latest editions of XORG leave out the intel i810 Driver in favor just one "intel" driver. The result no accelerated graphics on my old laptop. It use to run compiz before I "upgraded" to Ubuntu to 8.10.
Ditto a friend of mine who uses an old box with an nvidia TNT2. Worked before upgrade, now it doesn't.
*I use linux exclusively, so don't think I'm trying to knock it. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -13/+26Oh right, because Linux is such a juggernaut on the desktop. Get a ***** life.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -2/+15If XP works great for you, and supports all your old *****, then stick with it, it's a very solid OS. Most of the hardware I own was purchased in the past 3 years or so and all of it works well with Windows 7. I run XP and Ubuntu on my laptop, and dual boot Vista and 7 for the past 2 weeks on my desktop. So far, 7 is better than any of them, and its only a beta. Any concerns I still had with Vista were addressed perfectly. The Aero is crisper, the GUI is more functional than anything else imo, and the whole thing is just fast. Could it be possible that MS is actually listening to people and trying to give them what they ask for? I for one am curious to see how the Apple, "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads will try to spin this negatively.
- Hermmunster, on 01/13/2009, -2/+15Vosona, Microsoft is a monopoly. They were sued by the US Federal Government, the Justice Department, and found guilty of predatory criminal monopolistic practices and they were ordered split up. That last part was overturned but they were and are legally ruled a monopoly by the Federal Government.
- Toshibi, on 01/13/2009, -1/+14Good lord, how many people use Photoshop? It seems to me that every time Linux is mentioned everyone comes out of the woodwork saying "But Photoshop!!!" I actually am a bit of an artist...not professional, as in, I'm not getting paid for it, but The Gimp has everything I need and more.
Honestly, I think people are just brainwashed by brand recognition. - WhereAmI, on 01/12/2009, -2/+14The apt repositories are awesome (synaptic is just a GUI for it).
# apt-get install thunderbird
Latest Thunderbird installs
# apt-get install flash-plugin-nonfree
Latest flash installs. Also, Linux has 64-bit flash in beta, and thats really the only reason people still use 32-bit Firefox or some wrapper. I installed it right away and its great.
Pretty much any program or Linux driver (this is all for k/ubuntu) out there installs with these commands.
apt-get install nvidia-glx (or something like that)
Full 3D graphics and everything. Not open source, but its nice to just type that and be done. - Sokkratez, on 01/13/2009, -3/+15"Granted, I’m a bit biased in favor of Linux, but both machines had everything I’d need or want on a netbook — and more than you’d get with a Windows 7 netbook. (For instance, full-blown office suites…)"
Does this guy not realize OpenOffice runs on Windows too? - basemodel, on 01/13/2009, -9/+21Dear god, is Microsoft just now responding to what they see as competition? Seems like Linux will have to step up and make a push to get a user base not within their modest clientel of loyal nerds. For those die hard windows users - this is finally progress - you're welcome.
-Linux fan - jellygraph, on 01/13/2009, -2/+14this article was big lulz. but, one should be careful talking about linux here on digg. there are a lot of windows fanboys
- thelastcivilian, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12My binary can beat up your binary.
- etherreal, on 01/13/2009, -4/+16I already say that about Google. At least Gates gives billions to charity...
I can support Microsoft because it is a shining example of capitalist success. - onidraky, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11That's why most of my customization is organizing things the way I like them and removing chrome. Customization doesn't just mean adding things. I probably hate busy systems with crap all over doing nothing but slowing stuff down as much as you do. I welcome customizing as much as can be offered, but rarely "rice" up anything.
- Daniel591992, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11Windows 7 should work the same way and support what Vista supports.
- LeviTheSmith, on 01/13/2009, -1/+12Spelling? Correct? In my dreams...
- motang, on 01/13/2009, -3/+14I have to agree with kd420 (also my main OS is Ubuntu). I have been testing out Windows 7 in VirtualBox and I have had pretty good experience with it so far.
- zwaldowski, on 01/13/2009, -1/+12Actually, Windows 7 has less software than in Vista. No Windows Mail, no "actual" Contact client, no Calendar, no Movie Maker (but DVD Maker?!), no Messenger.
- depro9, on 01/13/2009, -20/+30Why would a monopoly need a good image? Your logic is most flawed.
