- Frostek, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4Given the major improvements making Linux much more accessible in the last few years, I see no reason for this trend to change. I believe that it will end up on a significant number of machines in the end.
I think there won't be an exact time when it gets there, but I think it will gradually creep in here and there until more and more people start noticing it. - LANjackal, on 11/08/2008, -0/+110 million is SUCH A BIG NUMBER. What's the population of NYC? LOL. 10 million is nothing dude. There are more installed Xbox 360s than that even, and probably more iPhones.
Don't get me wrong, I run Linux on my PS3 and on another laptop, but unlike most fanatics I don't deceive myself into thinking that it'll be mainstream at any point in the future, barring a major disaster with either Windows or OS X. And no, Vista was not that disaster. - matthekc, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1More interesting is Microsoft's recent actions handing Russia and China to Linux on a silver platter. I think those countries will have a lot of Linux converts in the coming years.
- daengbo, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2I think it's hilarious that you base your numbers on a web survey, especially when it's opt-in and U.S.-based. Verified Ubuntu installs are pegged at 8 million. There's another 2 million EeePCs running Linux. Without counting any other forms of Linux (Android, Kurumin in Brazil, ALTLinux in Russia, ...), that's 10 million desktop/notebook users.
I think it's hilarious (idiotic, really) that you find 10 million to be a small number. The world is larger than your backyard. - LANjackal, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I think it's hilarious (pathetic, actually) that an OS that makes up barely 0.71% of the market (down from 0.91% the previous month) is being touted a mainstream contender? Excuse me, but that's like saying cough medicine has a chance of overtaking orange juice as a breakfast staple, because some people happen to take their dose of the former in the morning. The funnier part is that I can count the number of Linux users I've met in the wild on ONE hand. Buried.
- matthekc, on 11/08/2008, -0/+11 Windows XP 73.80%
2 Windows Vista 12.14%
3 Mac OS X 5.33%
4 Windows 2000 2.33%
5 Linux 2.09%

Different stats sites get different results and all are based on counters and visitor traffic the real linux percent may be between lanjackal and my numbers it's really hard to say.
