- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -15/+83How is this closer to having Linux on the Wii? Did you mean having the Wiimote working on Linux?
- Tu13erhead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+68Figuring out how to use the Wiimote in Linux is part of it. What good would Linux be if one can't control anything?
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47@Microdot
"but why is it, everytime i turn around, the wii fanclub is wanting to make their wii more like a ps3? first its browsers... then its hd... then its nix. just get a ps3 already"
Okay so then by that theory, the PS3 is trying to be like the Xbox. Because IT had a hard drive, AND Linux, and I'm sure someone made a homemade browser somewhere way before the PS3 even saw the light of day. Nobody likes a fanboy.
Thanks for comin' out champ. Why don't you change some weapons real-time style and kill some giant crabs. - ahirreddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33This could mean the Wiimote could work on ... GASP! PS3. It is a bluetooth device and could theoretically work on the PS3 with the correct drivers. Here's me NOT hopping it ever happens.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31did you notice he is running linux?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24It means that they are beginning to have a working driver for it, thus when Wiili is finally available, you'll be able to use the wiimote for it.
It's a step in the right direction, and I have full confidence in this project that they will soon have a working disk for the wiili project. - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Microdot, you're an idiot. EVERY recent console has efforts to put Linux on it; the Xbox, PS2, 360, GC, and the Wii. Even the PSP, DS, and Gameboy have Linux. Hell the iPod has Linux! BUt of course, since you have a PS3, which can run Linux out of the box, EVERY one of those systems are copying the PS3, right? I mean, Nintendo came out and said they would have a free internet browser for the Wii months ago, but, ya know... thats copied from the PS3!
...
I have one word for you, SIXAXIS. - beatbox360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23@Microdot
Wow! Can the PS3 really do some of the things I do on my computer? Gee, that sure is cool! Too bad the piece of ***** doesn't have any decent games on it. Then again, I did hear you could play Quake 3 on it using Linux. So I guess that makes Quake 3 the best PS3 game to date. Awesome! - jaydj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I agree. This is one step closer to having Wii on Linux. Even then it's only the WiiMote.
- dmitry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21How awesome would it be if you could use the wiimote for the pc?
Insane. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19What editor?
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@ Microdot
Ill have all that for $350 cheaper, and plus the wii mote ... wiiiiiiiii - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Dude, shut the ***** up. We don't care about you, or what you're sick of. Stop trolling and get a life.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22well it's not, but since it's from WiiLi.org, it is a step in some direction...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@Microdot
Because the Wii is a very capable machine with still lots of untapped potential. I myself cannot wait for linux on the wii and hopefully having wiimote-navigation capability for surfing the net while sitting on the couch. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You need to do a little research before you post retarded comments like that. Check the wiili.org wiki and read about development of their wiimote driver.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The WiiMote is actually a fairly simple Bluetooth pointing device from a driver point of view, even though it's very complex in implementation (requiring external point queues to help determine orientation and frame of reference and the movements based on the AD accellerometer device). This means pretty much anything capable of using Bluetooth should be capable of supporting it. Macs, Windows, Linux, PS3, GameCube Linux, choose your poison.
It'll be interesting to see what developers take from this in implementing their own "flying mice" and compatible solutions (knockoff Wiimotes?) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12We don't like your kind here.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Um... I don't see you writing any Wii remote drivers.
Nothing like condemning the project as a failure before it's finished. - nonesupplied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11 No Rotation
If we assume the remote does not rotate, then the only terms remaining in the motion equations are: (Put some math here)
Take from the Wiili Wiki.
If only it was truly as easy as writing "Insert Math Here" - robot1122, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12yea, but game play would not change...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Awesome!! I cant wait to be surfing digg with my wiimote from my bed!
- pegisys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Microdot
this
"its already done for you"
is why it's so lame, it takes all the fun away anyone can put a cd in and install a supported OS, but getting the system to run an OS that it's not supposed to is what makes it fun to put linux on the system - Featherbeard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Anyone else driven nuts by the fact this guy can't seem to hold the damn camera steady..?
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Who cares if you don't care? Go play with your Barbies and get off our site.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And.. There goes a block;
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How is this innacurrate? It is a wiimote working on a PC. We arent talking fully functional here, but the PC is collecting data from the wiimote. So your comment is innacurrate, thus I am burying you.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Your name is "appleman", your icon is the mac logo, and you hate linux?
Um, appleman... About this "OS X" you love so much...
I have some bad news for you... - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I admit, I really liked this revelation. I own a PC, but no consoles, and if I could I'd prefer Wiimote-style control with my PC. This is because PC graphics are inherently capable of surpassing consoles, since graphics cards will always be able to evolve more quickly than a new console can be released. Hell, who knows, maybe AMD may come out with its "fusion" of CPU and GPU sooner than we think. Another thing is that PC market is so diverse, that you get more choice of equipment providers and features.
So now that the bluetooth secret is out, will there hopefully be innovators out there who come up with new and improved Wiimote-style controllers that are better than the Wiimote itself? I once posted before that I'd like a powerglove/dataglove style controller that could reproduce all the movements of my hands and fingers, as well as kneepad and elbowpad sensors. If the PC market tries to imitate the Wiimote concept, then we could see a whole spread of various positional sensor devices.
Gee, this would be a pretty cool possibility, imho. - marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All it does is measure acceleration. If gravity is pulling at the Wiimote but another force (your hand and the ground, i.e. a normal force) is keeping it up, it will register a perceived acceleration upward. This is how games measure tilt. Let the Wiimote drop, and gravity will do its job. Neglecting air resistance, the measured acceleration is now zero.
On a zero-g environment, if the game was written correctly it might still work as far as motion sensing goes (acceleration sensing), but it would not be able to measure tilt (and I suspect most of the motions in the games are based on tilt, so it would be a pretty big problem). Not that anyone expected Nintendo to make the Wii space station-compatible :) - marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Of course I am. I'm working on the Linux version, so I'll probably code up a daemon that talks to the wiimote and returns data to whatever applications request it. Then, other programs could run on top of that and e.g. pass the data back to the kernel for mouse emulation, or read and write Mii data, or play sounds through the speaker.
I have no experience coding for other OSs, but I know of other people working on them, so eventually it should be available for Linux, Windows, and OSX. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just wait. This will be the ultimate Apple clicker. Able to sense motion for use as a mouse as well as full clicker function. Please, all the guys out there that did such cool work with the Macbook Hard Drive motion sensors, I'm willing to donate for a project to bring mouse functionality to the WiiMote on OS X.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, because that would be really useful without input...
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's not exactly one step closer to having Linux on the Wii (we need to figure out how to run unsigned code first), but it _is_ a very important step once we actually have Linux running on it, as it has to be able to use the Wiimote.
But currently, as far as this goes, the main focus is getting the Wiimote working on desktop computers (I'm working on the Linux side, and once we figure out the protocol I know people are working on Win and OSX drivers).
Here's the docs for what we have so far:
http://www.wiili.org/Wiimote - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10WHY THE ***** can't people use their ***** camcorders properly???
After 20 seconds most people are going to feel seasick when watching this clip!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Will it blend? That is the question! .... oh, wait
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is precisely what we're getting - accelerometer data. Pointer data is what's not working (yet), although we'll get it to work (I definitely imagine what we could do with it, that's why I want to get it to work!)
Everything available to the Wii is through Bluetooth. The Wii doesn't use any other protocol. - Tu13erhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wiimote motion analysis:
http://www.wiili.org/Motion_analysis - Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But it's a start..
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We are putting most of the effort into the pointing functionality. It just happens that getting accelerometer data from it is _much_ easier than getting it to return the data from the IR camera. I personally think the IR sensor is much more useful, it's just a bitch to get to work!
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5hmm. I wonder if open source Wii dev tools could result from this project..
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I believe we'll get coordinates for the IR hotspots in the camera-frame, i.e. a reduction of the camera frame to useful information.
Something like x,y,size of each "dot" as seen by the sensor. Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth for 200fps 1024x768 video, even if black and white. The output reports seem to be about the right size for four sets of coordinates (the wiimote tracks max 4 IR sources).
Then it's up to us to figure out where we're pointing at from that, but it should be fairly easy. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7needless to say, The Wii has opened a can of worms for possibility
both for the Wii itself and everywhere...
hell, even PS3 fans are considering
"hey... maybe the PS3 could use the Wii-mote"
this is a new age of gaming that has started
whether it catches on remains to be seen
but i give full credit to Nintendo for having the guts to give it a shot
:D
if I could digg something twice I would..... - Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Once they figure out how the pointing works (besides an IR camera) they will be able to make a cursor controled by the wiimore
- LordFate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So, this mean my wii won't work in zero gravity environments because it's calibrated to account for acceleration due to gravity?
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I won't claim to be a very good cameraman, but trying to keep the camera perfectly steady while moving around with the wiimote and throwing it on a chair is not exactly trivial ;)
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I know, I really ought to get a decent camera setup. Once I go back to my house for winter break, I'll have better tools to work with.
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is cool... If the Wiimote becomes fully functional on the PC, I'll buy one :D
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's so weird that there are people like you out there.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is why we have (to kidnap) mathematicians!
