- Turbojugend27, on 02/21/2009, -7/+42And what about the millions of corporate users?
***** these articles are stupid. - Garciat, on 02/21/2009, -0/+24GLaDOS?!
- KibibyteBrain, on 02/21/2009, -1/+22It's been interesting to see that the biggest threat to Microsoft has been Microsoft itself.
- nadalbg, on 02/21/2009, -1/+14Good to have more concuration. I dont think it will hurt Microsoft significantly though.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -10/+21Will some OS please just hurt Microsoft already!?
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -1/+12Is this the year of the gOS desktop?
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10gOS is by far the worst linux distro i have ever used, buggy, horrible lookin, pain in the neck to install properly, give me debian or fedora any day of the week
- computershack, on 02/21/2009, -1/+11Not a chance in hell. It's even less chance than Ubuntu has. How good it is technically doesn 't matter one ***** when people are buying netbooks as an appliance and they're wanting familiarity which means XP. Microsoft know this which is why XP hasn't been killed off for netbooks.
- osvik, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10How is it possible that's being released under a "Creative Commons Attribution NON COMMERCIAL Share Alike 3.0 Unported license ???
All the other OS'ses (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint) allow commercial use. This is a SERIOUS handicap. Why to chose a limited product when you have Ubuntu or Mint that do the same without a commercial limitation ?
Well, the screenshots look good. - bjornski, on 02/21/2009, -2/+11Until it runs Windows programs, it won't make a dent.
- Murdats, on 02/21/2009, -1/+10anti-virus has little to do with security. it's like wearing a condom to stop someone taking your money, sure it will protect you, but not from thieves.
it sounds like you have bought the FUD that anti-microsoft people spread, just like any OS if you keep it up to date and don't do retarded things you should have no problem. - qwertydvorak, on 02/21/2009, -2/+11back before xp took over the netbook arena, there were tons of stories on digg about the return rate on netbooks. i bet now that xp is on them the return rate has gone way down.
- Rogem002, on 02/21/2009, -6/+15Vista is like the emo kid of Mircosoft corp.
- raydeen, on 02/21/2009, -0/+8I doubt MS is afraid of the gOS. Maybe the Fedora or the Ubuntu and possibly the OS X, but not the gOS.
- Toshibi, on 02/21/2009, -1/+8Considering gOS is Ubuntu....it's all about what you have turned on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOS_(operating_system ... - ubuwalker31, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6IMHO, gOS violates the GPL in three major ways: 1) It does not license its derivative work under the GPL, but under a non-compatible license, 2) it does not include any licenses in the distro's .iso itself, 3) does not contain source code.
- gluon, on 02/21/2009, -2/+8wow another anti-microsoft article on digg. it's funny that the article is titled "Why the gOS Could Now Hurt Microsoft" but if you actually read the article, it just talks about how it's pretty and looks like a Mac - with no justifications or backing up of this theory and then throws in your typical, uninsightful, shallow thoughts about how XP is still the leader but that world will not stand still? Does this even make sense. Really if they wanted to review gOS that's one thing, but to put in this silly part at the end is arrogant. I should mention that I use OSX, Linux, and Win32 daily and have learned, unlike most, that each OS has its own merits and drawbacks and not acknowleding that is simply being yet another tech-lemming who does what they're not told because they understand it, but simply because they believe it.
- abbathdoom, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5Lulz, of all the distros out there gOS is not the one that is going to hurt MS. Ubuntu on the desktop, Red Hat in enterprise, those are the ones MS is scared of. gOS is POS making no inroads what so ever.
- Terasiel, on 02/21/2009, -6/+11I think I speak for the vast majority of computer users when I say: What the hell is gOS?
- Murdats, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5that and windows 7 with their lite version aren't out yet.
- Zaeboes, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5Its a sad day when we find out that modern linux distributions are heavier than windows xp. Really makes you wonder what was the point of it all. :-/
- t0x2c, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5No he's not asking what he is, he is saying that the average computer user won't know what gOS is, therefore it won't sell nearly as well as people are predicting.
Use your brain before you just idly digg down. - srg13, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4Singularity is a research operating system - they've stated that they are not planning to make a product out of it...
- mg128, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4i will say i tried about every linux OS i could think of on my eeepc 701, even the ubuntu versions tailored for it, and i liked gOS the best.
- srg13, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Yeah - I gave it a spin and couldn't really see anything that set it apart from the rest...
- DarkShroud, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Probably because the average person can't use Linux programs for what they need, especially if the computer is used for work related items. Then add into the mix having to baby sit the PC whenever the person needs it to do something new and wanting me to find & install the programs for free because I put that os on their computer.
Last but not least it doesn't matter if it's Windows , Linux, or even OSX the average non-tech user will still destroy the system. - Grogtron, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Not when anyone who cares notices that they too can make links to web pages and change their desktop wallpaper without changing their distribution.
- DangerCollie, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Oh what horse manure. XP is a security freak show. You connect to the internet regularly with Windows and IE, anti-virus or not, up to date on patches or not, and I guarantee you're carrying around a load of exploits, adware and registry infecting garbage. I've never scanned an XP machine more than a week old and haven't found something.
If you use Firefox with NoScript, you might have a little lower exploit load but it's still only a matter of time. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3firstly the price of the OS is included in the price of the netbook,
so you got your netbook with xp already installed on it, you slap AVAST or AVG antivirus, on it, maybe comodo firewall if you want a firewall and your sorted (all freeware i might add)
as with all computers, its only secure if you dont do retarded things with it, same with OSX, linux, unix. bsd, if you do something retarded your security will be compromised. - Toshibi, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3I've put gOS on a bunch of old computers. People seem to like it and it's easy selling the security when it looks pretty.
- IDcool, on 02/21/2009, -2/+4in THEIR DREAMS
- javaroast, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2I'm a big fan of Linux and even I have problems with this sensationalist headline. As far as the netbook space goes I don't really believe that MS has much fear of gOS. They may have some fear from things like Moblin - http://moblin.org - from Intel, or even the Ubuntu Netbook remix. Moblin is at least backed by a very well funded company that has the ability to stick enough into the development to make it very competitive.
The claim that gOS has any potential currently for Corporate use on any sort of a wide scale is hysterical. I doubt that even gOS would make that claim. - CoD4, on 02/21/2009, -3/+5Protip: Hurt doesn't mean take over
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3@Toshibi, spot on and well said.
@stanggt3, how does it feel to make a post based on nothing but your own idiotic assertions? asshat much? - bhalo05, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Even if you buy the anti-MS crap, the truth is that there are plenty of choices for anti-virus programs.
- Baryn, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2Mr Bitch, you are a pretentious bitch.
- LockDeltz, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1yeah gOS is really hurting Microsoft, that's why Wal-Mart took out all those PC's with gOS installed.
Might as well have the AmigaOS pre-installed on netbooks, at least it's user friendly. - qwertydvorak, on 02/21/2009, -2/+3@ mrBitch : i am talking in general. windows xp accounts for 90% of os share on netbooks as of december 2008.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/90-Percent-Netbooks ... - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -4/+5I'm sure they said the same thing about Firefox.
- bjornski, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1Most?
You're letting the content of your social circle affect your judgment.
"Most" people don't know this. And even a lot of the ones that do have issues making it work. - Ouze, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4BREAKING NEWS: free OS's are popular for $300 netbooks and can open Google Apps
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4@ DarkShroud RE: " ..add in a low resource usage AV like NOD32 "
And THAT is why you fail. How about installing an OS that doesn't NEED an Anti-Virus product to work properly? - mrBitch, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1@ qwertydvorak RE: " @ mrBitch : i am talking in general. windows xp accounts for 90% of os share on netbooks as of december 2008."
Again, I have to bring up the fact that your stats of "xp accounts for 90% of OS share on netbooks" as being a little bit silly, since you have neglected the fact that the "90% OS share" is only for the US market, which only accounts for 10% of the netbooks sold.
You did know that the US market only accounts for 10% of netbook sales didn't you?
http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=15390
"In 2008, computer makers shipped 9.9 mln netbooks, making it one of the hottest consumer electronic products of 2008. According to IDC, 6.7 mln units went to nations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa; 1.4 mln to Asia and the Pacific; and 950,000 to the USA." - mrBitch, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1@ DarkShroud RE: " .. it doesn't matter if it's Windows , Linux, or even OSX the average non-tech user will still destroy the system."
I agree with that statement, only problem is how does Anti Virus software protect the average non-tech user from destroying their system? - cliffzdude, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2It becomes very stupid when you realize what is so "awesome" about the OS, is simply the nice desktop they've put on top of a not so unusual linux based OS. Its stupid because the Linux community would be happy to copy and then improve upon an idea such as the pretty yet streamlined gOS desktop. IF this little distro gets really hot, it won't be long until the Ubunto community offers a distro that has the same usability and eye candy.
- bjornski, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1When I see a Mozilla OS, you might have a point.
Until then, it runs ON WINDOWS, it's not a lost sale. - KirbyMorph, on 02/21/2009, -2/+3Ya, it means 0.001% of the marketshare. Also, that marketshare is stolen from other Linxu distros, not MS. Good times.
- LingNoi, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1gOS has nothing to do with Google.
- tusseyd, on 02/22/2009, -1/+1Okay...let me see if I've got this right. The *new* Windows 7, which you can use purchase ~$100 (someday), will still under-perform Windows XP. Man! That is progress.
