- Kingoftherings, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4To most people Ubuntu = Linux
Kinda like when I was younger I thought Red Hat = Linux. - weizbox, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4'On top of this, many computer producers, from ASUS to Dell, decided to offer the option to buy PC and notebook with Ubuntu pre-installed'
Really? Last time I checked Asus was using Xandros on the Eee... was I unaware of some major change? sources? - weizbox, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2@possiblyneil,Kingoftherings (I don't want to reply to both)
I thought it may have been that too as first, but he specifically mentions the fact that it's a distribution of Linux.
'Ubuntu pre-installed - a user friendly Linux distribution.'
Now if he JUST said Ubuntu and left out Linux, sure.. I'd think he was doing some good 'ole Linux/Ubuntu swapping, but he mentions distros, so he's making the clarification about it this being a version of Linux. He's just lying about it for whatever reason... or just screwed up really hard without bothering to check if what he's typing is correct. Either outcome is no good.
We'll see if he responds on the comment section of his page... - FMGL, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Hi Weizbox,
I’m sorry I’ve been imprecise. I've deleted the ASUS reference, so now the text should be more coherent. To be honest, I didn’t want to create too much confusion naming different type of distributions.
I agree with possiblyneil and kingoftherings about Ubuntu becoming THE Linux distribution for home users, which at the end of the day, it’s not a bad thing. Let’s see if Ubuntu can raise sales from that 0.8% which 10gunsalute reports.
By the way, I am a ‘she’.
Cheers,
Francesca - weizbox, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1'To be honest, I didn’t want to create too much confusion naming different type of distributions. '
So you just wanted to lie instead.... I think that's confusing in itself, isn't it? Giving out bad info, and when people go to check that info, it's not what you said it was... that's certainly confusing to newcomers to Linux that already seem kinda lost as it is... as the transition can be hard without some support and trust at the moment.
'I agree with possiblyneil and kingoftherings about Ubuntu becoming THE Linux distribution for home users,'
When did they say this? They never said it was becoming THE Linux distro FOR home users (on this post at least)... I think they just merely said it was a popular name that's out there, like how RedHat used to be (and still is). I see nothing wrong with it's popularity (its great that Linux is growing), but I do think it's bad if people think of Linux AS Ubuntu, or vise versa.
Just keep it honest and don't change the truth around for convenience.
I apologize for the 'he' btw :) - brettalton, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1That article doesn't really articulate WHY people are switching, especially since, even as a Linux-user, it appears so marginal.
PS: Does anyone know where a high-res version of that "Ubuntu-logo as glass" is? I think it was posted on debiantart, but now I can't find it. - possiblyneil, on 05/29/2008, -1/+1I think that this is a shining example of how Ubuntu has become synonymous with Linux. Methinks it is not a good thing.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -4/+2Yet another article about Linux's "enormous desktop growth"...which is like from 0.3% of desktops to 0.8%. Who the ***** cares?
