- Nephersir7, on 11/02/2009, -4/+201Since Chrome will be the centerpiece of Google's upcoming Linux-based OS, speed/performance will probably matter more on Linux than on any other OS.
- datagrim, on 11/02/2009, -5/+107Maybe everyone should read the article. Especially where the OP says this:
"I pulled out the laptops side-by-side to be more scientific about
this. Here are the stats:
XP: 2GB RAM, Core2 Duo, 2.00 GHz
Ubuntu 9.10: 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo, 2.40 GHz
So, the Linux machine as 20% more CPU to work with."
Followed by this:
"So, I retried this with a fresh profile on both. The differences are
not as dramatic as I remember. I can't actually see a difference when
I run them side-by-side. "
Nothing to see here. Move along.... - lambda, on 11/02/2009, -1/+102A. They're not really sure.
- mysql101, on 11/02/2009, -1/+92i hope to god you are being sarcastic.
- wendall911, on 11/02/2009, -5/+95Great. Now everything regarding technology or something with Linux now triggers a Digg Windows Fanboy Douchefest. Go find something else to troll for ***** sake.
- ThantiK, on 11/02/2009, -8/+90All the linux haters coming out of the woodwork.
- x713, on 11/02/2009, -1/+66Little do you know...
- WunderTroll, on 11/02/2009, -3/+66No one expects you to.
- Toshibi, on 11/02/2009, -2/+62You're joking right? You know you can run Linux on anything, right?
- deathguppie, on 11/02/2009, -0/+56I've been using the beta Chrome on ubuntu and I have to admit it blows Firefox away for speed. It's actually really noticeable. Especially when opening links in tabs or waiting for a script to finish. It's really fast.
- burketo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+47Article? It's an online discussion between software engineers working for google.
I found it interesting, even though a lot of it was over my head. - T8erT0T, on 11/02/2009, -0/+47Depends if the poop-driver supports your buttware.
- BrownieMix, on 11/02/2009, -1/+48Because shut up
- OverDriven, on 11/02/2009, -0/+33Why do stupid people feel compelled to comment?
- MWeather, on 11/02/2009, -1/+34"anything? Can you run it on a piece of your *****?"
Debian can. - tj111, on 11/02/2009, -0/+30Oh sorry, let me apologize for the Digg algorithm allowing a submission not about cats to hit the front page. /s
- Gudeldar, on 11/02/2009, -0/+28"Cloud computing" is just a buzzword that means remotely hosted services that are accessed through the Internet (i.e. the Cloud).
- anthropodeus, on 11/02/2009, -1/+27On behalf of Digg's members, I apologize for forcing you to read this. I am sorry that you were not given the opportunity to click on any of the other fifteen links on the front page. This is an affront to your rights that we all support you through this difficult time.
- AmazingAndrex, on 11/02/2009, -0/+25Look up Google Chrome OS. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing ...
- azpat, on 11/02/2009, -6/+31it's funny how they don't care about macs.
- BrownieMix, on 11/02/2009, -1/+26Then why can't I run Windows 7 on any of my old computers and can with Ubuntu?
- sloppychris, on 11/02/2009, -0/+24Hint: It has to do with, at last count, the 141 diggs.
- Lucid00, on 11/02/2009, -1/+24More or less, but from what I've gathered it seems to boil down to Chrome being fast on Linux because Linux is fast.
Or in more detail, it handles application processes and rendering more efficiently, and that Windows and Mac already use up some resources for several tasks. - OverDriven, on 11/02/2009, -0/+22Wow...the morons are out in force tonight! You have absolutely zero idea what cloud computing even is, and yet you decide to make a comment anyways. Why? I'm honestly curious and would love a reply. Why would you make a comment about something you don't understand at all?
BTW...Gudeldar's definition is pretty much right on. And Chrome is not "cloud computing". It is a tool with which we can access the "cloud", as is any web browser. It has nothing to do with it's speed. - Nephersir7, on 11/02/2009, -0/+21I am running Chrome 4.0.223 (dev channel) on Mac 10.5 right now, and it's faster than Safari 4
Just ran a Sunspider benchmark: 365.8 ms (Chrome) vs 557.4 ms (Safari)
http://www2.webkit.org/perf/sunspider-0.9/sunspide ... - krisrm, on 11/02/2009, -3/+24You guys just got trolled hard :p
- aminy23, on 11/02/2009, -2/+23Huh, I wonder if that is why Ubuntu supports ARM, PPC, and itanium processors. Xubuntu runs on PC's with 128 MB ram. You can use almost any distro without a hard drive. Linux 2.6.30.1 used in Ubuntu 9.10 supports USB 3.0. If a computer can run Windows 7, it will run almost any Linux distro. Oh and chrome is still an unsupported beta for Linux.
- robersz, on 11/02/2009, -0/+17I don't know if there's a term for it, but It's like some kind of cyber xenophobia.
People are afraid of things that are different.
Linux is faster and more secure.
Windows has more compatible software + Hardware.
Besides, people feel safe when they pay for something, they expect support. - Polycarp87, on 11/02/2009, -2/+18Way over my head.
- AngelBunny, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15Not that they do not care but Chrome on OSX is only Alpha right now. Comparing would be nearly pointless atm.
- DamnMan, on 11/02/2009, -6/+21If anyone managed to keep reading without falling asleep you will see the answer ultimately turns out to be... It isn't really faster
His Linux box is 20% faster and his windows copy had history and bookmarks and ***** slowing it down. Any minor speed increases are most likely thanks largely to Linux' thread handling and window rendering. For Windows to have comparable rendering capabilities you would basically have to have the entire desktop area running in Direct3D like a video game does. Point of fact thats EXACTLY the default behavior of a Ubuntu system to render the desktop as a giant openGL texture(Compiz). - mesasone, on 11/02/2009, -2/+16No, he's clearly suggesting that Google has put more effort and resources into optimizing the Linux the version since it will be an integral part of their operating "system".
- AngelBunny, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13For a second I thought you where going to go all glenn beck on us.
- stufflebean, on 11/02/2009, -2/+15Admittedly, I haven't tried the Linux version of Chrome (my Linux box is headless), but I'm having a hard time imagining how it could be significantly faster than the Windows version. I can't remember any program, much less any browser, feeling as responsive as Chrome (okay, Opera and probably Firefox load pages about as quickly, but nothing can even touch Chrome on starting a new window).
Either way, yay for Chrome. - caramba421, on 11/02/2009, -1/+12"No other operating system is as widely supported."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetBSD#portability - michelebot, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10It may be an unsupported beta, but it's kicking butt.
- raydeen, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10"anything? Can you run it on a piece of your *****?"
No, but you can run it on your piece of *****. I have several pieces of ***** that it runs on. It runs beautifully on pieces of *****. - raydeen, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10It runs on tachyons. It actually brings up webpages before I can search for them.
- AngelBunny, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11I'm on Chrome right now in OSX and it is blazingly quick even in comparison to Safari. I just hope they remove the bloated forks and switch to queues. I also hope they set priority based on what the user is looking at. I'm tired of a flash ad in another tab using 100% cpu of one core when I'm trying to watch youtube in full screen.
- Jedakiah, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9Linux runs on my router, DVR, NAS, server, phone, iPod, oh yeah and my computers.
- Mujokan, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9Going for the Digg bury record...
- brundlefly76, on 11/02/2009, -1/+10Its not even an article its a ***** google groups thread - lol!
- dhughes, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8http://imgur.com/2HW4i.jpg
- maccam94, on 11/02/2009, -1/+8Actually so far chrome has been more optimized for windows than linux (they say so in that thread). Right now their largest userbase is Windows, so they've got more devs working on it. I bet once they have a working internal prototype for chrome os they'll work on optimizing chrome for it.
- mreloads, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Linux supported architectures: IA-32, MIPS, x86-64, SPARC, DEC Alpha, Itanium, PowerPC, ARM, m68k, PA-RISC, s390, SuperH, M32R and more. Look it up in Wikipedia. It can run on virtually anything. No other operating system support that much processor architectures.
Windows supports only x86 and x64. Hardware support depends on vendors. If they doesn't support hardware, Windows won't as well. Linux on the other hand has builtin drivers, therefore it can use older hardware as well as new. The older hardware is, the better Linux supports it. - 3242130193, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Agreed. Even after setting Firefox to cache data on ramdisks, I'm still finding that it takes a somewhat longer time than I'd expect to reload pages and etc. But for the features that it provides, a fraction of a second doesn't make a big deal to me.
- snagglefoof, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7I was expecting a "Linux rules, Windows sucks" thread. Cool if you're a developer though.
- AngelBunny, on 11/02/2009, -3/+9hahahahhahahhaahha milwaukeesbeast
- mister711, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6X11 is fast, when done correctly
