Because my AmiBIOS' USB boot function is totally messed up. - Marigold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4...the instructions aren't exactly "so easy a 12 year old dumb kid can follow"
The extras would be:
You need to get command prompt to point to the unzipped "win32" folder in step 4.
dsl-embedded.zip is usually found in the "current" folder of many of the mirrors in step 6
I'm for the open-source movement, but in some cases open-source needs to be in the simplest-possible terms to get the most users.
Otherwise, even if it's not a tool to use, this is definitely a good thing to have, if even to play with Linux or show others Linux. - Marigold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You need to get to the "win32" folder of wherever you've unzipped syslinux. This took me a moment, too : )
- nixonrichard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exactly . . . "No boot sector on USB device." I have to restart, not shutdown and start again, in order for my USB drive to be recognized fast enough. Also, for the casual Linux user, a bootable CD and/or VMware is good enough.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3FTA: just takes 50MB of space
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Because most computers i work on still don't boot from usb? that, and i don't have a 1gb spare drive to put it on.
- thinman1189, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I used to have Linux on my USB but it didn't work on my computer. I got a hard drive and that didn't work either...just bad hardware. My next computer will so I'll have it both on a hard drive and on a USB.
Linux on a USB drive is one of the handiest tools to have, especially if you work with computers (no *****). - ppincher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1when i tried the "syslinux j:" comand i got an error message that it was not recognized as a command or file
- coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Only a few minuets? But I don't know how do dance!
- TritonX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For a more complete system, may I suggest MCNLive based on Mandriva. I've been using it for few months now and it is working great.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you don't have to sell it...weird
- ppincher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0thanks marigold
- DiggyBank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Because I don't need Linux. Plan9 FTW!
- ramunas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Because I don't have an USB thumb drive?! Why would I need one anyway? I have 4mbit connection to get files...
- ChillEnt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Wake me up when the "Why don't you have Leopard installed in your USB thumb drive?" article arrives.
