- SnowCrashv5, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3people that know or other unix guys tend to give respect to hear i use linux. Windows guys act like i'm a microsoft hater rather than a linux lover. Other people just write me off as a nerd b/c they never heard of it and don't understand why someone would bother.

"Most business use windows bc it is consistent and will work with everything."
I have to disagree since I feel it's not entirely accurate- it ought to be the other way around- practically everything works with Windows(because practically everything was built/written to work with Windows, not because Windows has all the drivers and hooks built in- as a Windows user for the past 10 years and having installed and maintained Windows on my own and my friends'/relatives' PCs I know just how much of a pain a fresh Windows install is). The same applies to your sound card- it isn't really fair to blame the OSS chaps for the manufacturer's not releasing the card architecture specs. They have released data now, and support should be available in the next release of ALSA. So now the ALSA developers will write the drivers for Linux(Creative already did that for Windows).
Similarly, most PC games run on Windows because they were written to run on Windows, using DirectX APIs. Games that run using OpenGL will actually run pretty well on Linux as wellOn Ubuntu try Open Arena- it's written using the ioquake 3 engine(the Quake III Arena game on Windows, you can install it from the Ubunu Repositories(sudo apt-get install openarena)). or FreeDoom. Good quality games are beginning to pop up for Linux too. I think it's only a matter of time. You might want to check this page(it's a bit old but the projects here are still being developed and improved) http://linuxgames07.blogspot.com/2007/09/top-21-li ...
That aside, I dual boot XP and Ubuntu too(XP just for games and for some work related stuff for which I need MS Office(the EndNote plug-ins for Word actually)). Compared to a fresh install of XP(even without activation and patch updates) installing Ubuntu is a breeze. And yeah, it's great to show off with too : D - thetacticus, on 06/05/2008, -3/+2No doubt, linux is far superior to other OS's in terms of speed and reliability.
However, the world is built on windows. Most business use windows bc it is consistent and will work with everything.
This is why i dual-boot with ubuntu and XP. My X-FI sound card has yet to be supported in linux, and barely any games work in linux.
Therefore, i switch back and forth between the two depending on my purpose.
Games and schoolwork that needs IE, i use windows.
General browsing, internet, word processing and showing off...i use ubuntu.
Xandros is cool too...on my EEEpc
