- MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/12/2009, -9/+73Lol Linux is used in far more places than home PC's.
This article is spam. - nitinsatish, on 01/12/2009, -17/+70No way ! Its not Open source.
- DavidGX, on 01/12/2009, -4/+52Buried as inaccurate.
- michaelpinto, on 01/12/2009, -11/+59Is it free? Besides most Linux runs on servers not on the desktop...
- TheHomelessBoy, on 01/12/2009, -9/+56i use both....and no.
- gab1to, on 01/12/2009, -3/+49Linux will not die...
Windows can't kill it. - diemunkiesdie, on 01/12/2009, -1/+46More like Windows 7 will crush Vista and XP. It'll also convince my granddad to move on from Windows 3.1. Well maybe not, Windows 3.1 kicks too much ass!!
- roebeet, on 01/12/2009, -9/+54Microsoft desktop OS: 88% of the market. Linux running as a desktop OS: Less than 1%.
How is Microsoft going to "crush" Linux, as a desktop OS? Hasn't that already been the case, for more than a decade? - FlyingCaveman, on 01/12/2009, -4/+41Oh! Please stop! Why is it going to crush Linux? Some kind of mind-control device, or adding features Linux users already have, or taking credit for open-source apps, then charging money for it.
- TakeMyCrabs, on 01/12/2009, -3/+35So linux geeks would pay to learn a whole bunch of different commands?
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+33Ugh. Windows will not crush Linux, Linux will not crush Windows, same goes for OS X. They each have their niche and their culture and their own set of people who like specific things about them. I prefer Linux, that doesn't mean it's the best, it just means it's the best for me. If you think Windows is better for you, then it probably is. I wish people wouldn't be so competitive about this and just work to make each respective OS as good as they can.
- Smegzor, on 01/12/2009, -6/+36Microsoft may own 88% of all the desktops, but I own my desktop and they can't have it. Not theirs.
- Krissam, on 01/12/2009, -3/+33Burried for making ***** up and pulling numbers out of your ass
- forknife, on 01/12/2009, -6/+34That's just like, you're opinion man...
- rookiepaul, on 01/12/2009, -2/+29This guy is a tool.
- wigren, on 01/12/2009, -3/+29FTA: "Applications like Firefox, Open Office, MYSQL, GIMP… wait all these applications are now available for Windows. Moreover, they are easier to install in Windows then they are in Linux."
Wat? Ubuntu comes with three out of four of those already installed and a mysql installation is as easy as opening Synaptic. This article is BS, plain and simple. I installed 7 in a VM. So far I'm not impressed. - SmSpillaz, on 01/12/2009, -0/+24Simple answer:
It'll look for my GRUB install and wipe it out. - Emachine, on 01/12/2009, -15/+38No it won't. Each OS has strengths.
Windows 7 on desktops (for gaming and *****)
OSX on laptops (for getting ***** done)
Linux on servers (for hosting *****) - Fredx, on 01/12/2009, -1/+23Linux distributions are commonly used as operating systems for supercomputers. As of August 2008, out of the top 500 systems, 423 (84.6%) run a Linux distribution.
Bring it on ! - ArthurSucks, on 01/12/2009, -5/+22Only if Windows7 goes GPL and is free to use modify and distribute. Oh yeah and it needs 100% full linux software support.
- salvatoreiovene, on 01/12/2009, -4/+19Buried as lame.
- bhuntsbarger, on 01/12/2009, -0/+13399.00 dollars in pennies 39900. 39900 pennies * 3.11 grams per penny = 274 pounds... Yes 274 pounds could probably crush Linus Torvalds if it were to jump on him!
- Waiting2awake, on 01/12/2009, -1/+14Ahh this is just the latest volly of FUD from the dinosaurs in Redmond.
Linux, the last best hope for computer freedom. - malfourmed, on 01/12/2009, -15/+27Vista on anything (just *****)
- spinalcracker, on 01/12/2009, -1/+13I am not saying that Windows 7 wont do well, and it is better than Vista (what isn;t?), but so far the BETA just seems like they fixed a few of the issues with VISTA, slapped a new bar on there and called it a new OS. While this isn't necessarily true, its what 95% of the end users are going to see it as, and people are reluctant in this economy to pay out a few hundred bucks for a new task bar.
Also, for 64bit users, Ubuntu is a far better choice. 64bit flash FTW yo! - cquinnd, on 01/12/2009, -1/+13Agreed. Digg marked as inaccurate for bias and attempt at flamebait page hits from a networkworld opinion piece.
- Myztry, on 01/12/2009, -3/+15Windows Fan Boys had better hope that is not the case.
If you want better pricing, non-subscription OS's, innovations, etc then you'd BETTER hope competition stays around!
Microsoft is solely in the business of making money. If there is no reason to spend, they will not...
Indeed if you want a better Windows for yourself then you would be smart to encourage others to the competition. - Kabloink, on 01/12/2009, -0/+11At least get him to upgrade to Windows for Workgroups 3.11 for that 32 bit disk cache awesomeness.
- azbmr, on 01/12/2009, -2/+13No WAY! TiVo and Linksys are going to start embedding/using Win7 now!
/s - cawpin, on 01/12/2009, -1/+12your
- slayerxyos, on 01/12/2009, -7/+17microsoft opensource is not opensource. this article is inaccurate so i buried it.
POWERSHELL, Open Source, FEATURES… WTF! they are copying us. - LiquidSpark, on 01/12/2009, -6/+16I don't think it'll eliminate linux but I think w7 is gonna help MS keep their current market share. So far the w7 beta has been much better than I was expecting.
- ArthurSucks, on 01/12/2009, -1/+11How about Comix, Ardour and Compiz-Fusion for starts.
- GernBlanston, on 01/12/2009, -3/+13Columnist fail. I wouldn't disagree with this in any way except it was written like a 14 year old fanboy.
- ultrasparc, on 01/12/2009, -5/+15This article is fail.
- WhereAmI, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Exactly why Windows CE should not be used.
- CoreyTamas, on 01/12/2009, -2/+11I read an article just like this one about Vista a few years ago.
- ChiefSmokeDawg, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Do these articles get proofread? There are several errors in it and one is in the first paragraph. If this person can't even write correctly, I really could care less about their opinion or review.
- dasunst3r, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Don't forget Linux also runs on embedded systems as well as other mission-critical things. We wouldn't want stuff like avionics software crashing mid-air, correct?
- slayerxyos, on 01/12/2009, -2/+11$ man opinion
- astyguy, on 01/12/2009, -2/+10someone digg this article out in four years time and we will see who is right ......
- Elranzer, on 01/12/2009, -3/+11Isn't Windows already "crushing" Linux (as well as Mac OS) in terms of market share? If they mean that Windows 7 will have more users than Linux, then eventually YES that's true (all new shipping PCs will come pre-installed with Windows 7).
However, if the author thinks that Windows 7 will win BACK the folks that originally ditched Windows for Linux, then no, they've got another thing coming. - javaroast, on 01/12/2009, -2/+10That might just win the award for the dumbest analogy ever
- Elranzer, on 01/12/2009, -2/+9KDE
Gnome - shredswithpiks, on 01/12/2009, -3/+10I guess your math is correct, but I don't like the connotation. Even though windows is cheaper than a years worth of internet, I'd like to save money where I can.
If you justify every purchase by "well it's cheaper than a few years of paying this bill" you could justify the purchase of absolutely any ridiculous thing. - sirjoebob, on 01/12/2009, -2/+9For one thing, Linux is more secure and does not require me to shell out money on antivirus programs.
Also, Linux is unparalleled in server computing and setting up a hardened Windows server is much more expensive and complicated. I have a zero-cost Linux server that runs a website, SSH, FTP, etc.
The failure of Windows server environments is evident by how much the beta crashed Microsoft's servers.
As far as programs that Windows does not have: bash. The intuitive, powerful shell is enough for me. I can do things with a few keystrokes in Linux that take 3rd party software and time to do on Windows. It is all a matter of personal choice. I for one am glad we have it. - mithrasinvictus, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Guess where he picked up that skill:
"He has worked for Microsoft writing research and analysis documents for Windows Server 2008, Windows HPC, and PerformancePoint Server 2007." - WhereAmI, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7Everyones forgetting that within 4 months every useful feature of Windows 7 will already be in Linux. I've been using KSnapshot for some time now and my friend who used Windows 7 said the new screen capture program was his favorite thing.
- armo, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7399 U.S. dollars = 267.08615 British pounds
- GiJoeBob, on 01/12/2009, -4/+10I LOL'd!
