giggity - jjk7288, on 10/30/2007, -35/+84Another "OMG LINUX ORGASM" post. Yawn.
Real news, anyone? - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -1/+36I'm jealous. I had high hopes of making my mom a linux computer, but she's an old battleaxe who, "Just wants her god damn AOL." So now it's XP Professional. I installed Firefox and renamed the icon to, "Internet." I did change the homepage to AOL, and tried to show her the glory that is anything *but* AOL ... but a few days passed before I noticed that damned AOL icon back on the computer. In any case, I'll let her waste $25 a month. I tried.
- Zippo, on 10/30/2007, -5/+39Pfft, yo mama uses Ubuntu...
... oh wait - yoda17, on 10/30/2007, -3/+36I was given a W95 computer by a coworker. I put OpenOffice on it and passed it along to my mom. She used it heavily for business (mostly data entry and receipt tracking) for 3 years (retired now) but had no clue that she was not using MS Office and always referred to the programs as Excel and Word.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30You should set it up so you can support them remotely through ssh (and xforwarding over ssh)
- Akaji, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Making up names for imaginary things is nice.
- lastdeadmouse, on 10/30/2007, -8/+32Obscure? Seriously? I just posted it because it kind of counters the idea that linux is only for nerds. Anymore it's become a "it just works" OS.
- bightchee, on 10/30/2007, -5/+26I'm going to visit my family next week and have threatened to install Ubuntu in all their computers. Is 3000 miles far enough away to remove all responsibility for supporting them or just far enough to make it a pain in the ass?
- EnderMB, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Sounds fitting. It's small, no one uses it, and there's a desperate yearning for other people to use it, even though it'll never become popular enough for the cool people.
- Szandor, on 10/30/2007, -1/+18I get headaches and homicidal impulses just thinking about AOL.
- ubuntuedgy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15My mom didn't care what was running, as long as it had solitaire. Linux, Unix, DOS, whatever..."where is solitaire?"
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -10/+24Every time someone switches to Linux, a Linux fanboy gets a hard-on.
- jdoe562, on 10/30/2007, -9/+23Am I the only one who felt that this was written by a 13 year old?
- VinceNoir, on 10/30/2007, -1/+14I just saved your mom 20% on her car insurance. In the back seat of my car. And I'm a gecko. (Please re-read this entire post and you will see that nothing untoward was said. I'm a classy man.)
- unruled, on 10/30/2007, -0/+13I once booted into a linux distro, went to get some food... found my sister on the pc later browsing the internet and chatting, and all she said was "did you install a new theme for windows?".
I think that says enough :P - EnderMB, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19Ubuntu does not 'just work'. It suffers from hardware incompatibilities and involves many confrontations with the terminal if you come across a problem. Those are the stories you tend to hear less about though.
- D3koy, on 10/30/2007, -1/+13Dugg for 2 reasons:
1) You Tried
2) I did the same thing, and so far it's still working... - EnderMB, on 10/30/2007, -9/+20There's only one thing I care about.
When's Dinner ready?! - ronin2040, on 10/30/2007, -2/+13...they do nothing?
- Jeepxj206, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Psssh.. My mom could so kick your moms ass
- lastdeadmouse, on 10/30/2007, -0/+10Hahah. Hahahaha. Classic.
- ToadLeg, on 10/30/2007, -2/+12ur mom goes to college
- V1ncent, on 10/30/2007, -3/+13My parents have been running XP just fine for years. Sad? Hell, no - as long as they don't ask me for help I'm OK-dokey!
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -0/+10Hmm, this so-called "linux" sounds interesting. Perhaps you could tell me more.
- marx2k, on 10/30/2007, -2/+11Did he just say "more on my mom to come"?
- vonskippy, on 10/30/2007, -1/+9Mom's - they're not just for breakfast anymore.
- whataboutdave, on 10/30/2007, -4/+12My mother uses Xubuntu. This is fact - not my attempt to garner fame.
- lastdeadmouse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Look, I've been in the industry for several years, in a company's data center that handles roughly 115 remote locations. No PIX firewalls, mostly Fortinet at the moment. Servers? A few Windows, several SCO's OpenServer (not my choice, but not for long), and a LAMP server for remote desktop support. Granted, I once worked at Denny's, but I was in college when you were probably just attending your elementary graduation. Don't troll.
- ataylor32, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8The ending of this article reminded me of this:
http://xkcd.com/272/ - misterhektik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I agree. These stories are *****. I've been using freebsd for years now. When installing Ubuntu to dual boot, it refused to assign my nic an IP. Turns out that Ubuntu didn't know how to turn the nic on. Lets see your mom figure that one out.
- MarkKezner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9zing!
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Slax?
- SoundScape, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Kudos to your mum.
- Godel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7So stories like this are posted on popular news sites and more random people learn about Linux.
- andywebb95, on 10/30/2007, -1/+8One could say Microsoft has almost done for office software what Crescent did for the adjustable wrench and Xerox did for the photo copier.
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Man even Windows/OS X is not usable by moms "without their son as install and support desk"
- imran7, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Should read,
This is the story ..... all about how my life got twist turned upside down and I would like to take a minute just sitting right here... - antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If you do, make sure you get the beta of 7.10 rather than the version that is on the Ubuntu site. There are some pretty massive improvements in the new version, including Bulletproof X and Compiz-Fusion by default.
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/gutsybeta - greywolfexcel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Right... And I'd like to see her use slackware or gentoo.
- ronin2040, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9heh, alright buddy. Lemme know when you know how to configure a PIX enterprise firewall for VPN, or set up RADIUS authentication for VPN/Wireless single-sign-on, or configure a sharepoint site.
Network engineer runs a broad spectrum, from Geeks-on-call type people (who themselves run a broad spectrum, im sure there are a few good ones there), all the way to enterprisey type people who deal with technology youd cream your pants to use (like blades). Dont assume we all fit the same mold, some of us actually know what we're doing. - sammcj2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6well you might have them call you less saying "son, we've been having some problems with the computer!, its running slow - what was that thing you ran last time defrabulator or something? oh and did i tell you last time we turn the computer on we won $1,000,000 ! I think we're going to buy a new computer when we get sent it in the mail next week!"
- simn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm using my laptop for office work + surfing. everything works fine with ubuntu out of the box. Maybe you have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbunt ...
Good luck installing everything! - greywolfexcel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Seriously. Widespread adoption of Linux will only be realized when you can go up to a random person, ask them if they know what linux is, and see if they have an opinion of it. In the meantime, it's pointless to keep fawning over "success stories" when the average citizen still believes that an antivirus pop-up can remotely scan your computer within about 5 seconds and detect 50+ severe viruses/malware hidden on their hard drive (this happened to someone I know just a few days ago).
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ah, yes, but there are no system sounds, a shoddy version of ALSA, and screwed up ACPI. Wait the fourteen days, please.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Write an article about real complaints if you want to be featured on Digg. Video drivers are installed graphically in Ubuntu. So are applications like an IM client.
- jivemasta, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5I've been thinking about installing some sort of linux on my grandmas computer. As long as theres a Web browser shortcut on the desktop, she's good to go. That way I won't have to worry about having to come over every week or so to reinstall windows because she downloaded stuff that breaks it.
- Szandor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7And Ballmer gets a soft-on?
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7For years getting Linux into a condition where it is usable by people of all experience levels has been a big goal of the community. Articles like this are certainly relevant to the Linux topic on Digg. Articles take up... what, 100 pixels on the front page? Skip it if you don't like it.
