If there is enough resources then unique and innovative things spring up in order to do something better. For example two kernel drivers that support virtual machines, but take different approaches toward it. But OpenSolaris doesn't do that, instead all those Linux drivers cannot be used, and all the packages for OpenSolaris have to be modified and recompiled, and a lot of other work is duplicated. And in reality, it is not even in the spirit of free software that Sun is developing OpenSolaris, because if it were, OpenSolaris would be licensed under the GPL 2.
