Why I am Leaning Toward OpenSolaris

codeghar.wordpress.com — OpenSolaris has a lot going for it. It has community (claimed to be growing every day), backing from Sun, Solaris lineage, and cutting edge technology. I feel it is good for Linux and BSD to have a worthy competitor in the open source software world.

  • Sanzanric, on 11/16/2008, -1/+0A competitive nature is good when there isn't a partitioning of effort going on. If there is enough resources then unique and innovative things spring up in order to do something better. For example two kernel drivers that support virtual machines, but take different approaches toward it. But OpenSolaris doesn't do that, instead all those Linux drivers cannot be used, and all the packages for OpenSolaris have to be modified and recompiled, and a lot of other work is duplicated. And in reality, it is not even in the spirit of free software that Sun is developing OpenSolaris, because if it were, OpenSolaris would be licensed under the GPL 2.
