- estvir, on 11/10/2007, -11/+82The whole "X copied y" in all things IT related is, for the most part, amazingly stupid and more or less only fuelled by ignorant Apple fans. It's something which needs to stop but it won't because these morons believe every word Jobs says and will not recognise anyone else's work aside from Apple.
Everything 'goes the same way' - Browsers had tabbed browsing as early as '99 IIRC and was soon adopted by somewhat popular browsers such as Opera but tabbed browsing didn't get too much attention until it was in FF which became very popular.
Does it matter who did it first? Nope. So, please, could all the ignorant Apple zealots PLEASE STOP TALKING about 'copying' and the like. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+63No, let me tell you what happens ALL the time, these guys go back in time after stealing Steve Jobs innovative and creative ideas, using their time machine they don't want to share with rest of world because they are not as nice as Apple.
And they re-implement the stolen ideas into what they are capable of (crap).
/sarcasm. - strib666, on 10/11/2007, -3/+49"make people believe that it was Microsoft that invented the windows based GUI for computers when in fact it was APPLE that invented the windows based OS and invented the mouse"
Jobs has said publicly that he got the idea for the Apple GUI after seeing a GUI at Xerox PARC. And Honeywell invented the mouse.
---JRE--- - amoore260, on 11/10/2007, -27/+65Apple does anything but think different. Apple is the king of reinventing the wheel. MP3 Players were around before iPods, Unix was around before OSX, The PC was around before the MAC. Mac reinvent the wheel......
- bpmdub, on 10/11/2007, -5/+34@upside
not about the money huh? Is that why I can go down and pick up just about any Windows or Linux based computer for much less than any Mac? Or why their OS is so locked down I cannot put it on a custom built system? Or why they are charging $600 on a locked down cell phone? Or why I can find many mp3 players that are quite equal in quality to the iPod for much cheaper? I can go on but I know it is useless and I am just going to get dugg down anyway. - Dumbledorito, on 11/10/2007, -13/+36What irks me is how Jobs keeps showing off technology that's derived from other tech and passing it off as an innovation. For example, his iMac "finally" allowed you to edit video, edit music, burn CDs and watch movies all on one machine. Finally?
I hate to break it to Mr. Black Turtleneck, but this PC owner had been doing that for years before the iMac desktop Jell-O mold was even conceived. - mrmacky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20I agree.
Besides, it's not about who copied who... it's about who copied and got it right :') - Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_(pronoun)
"Who copied who?" is correct when there are no prepositions involved. - RogerStrong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Except of course that many Windows PC makers were doing just that - selling Windows PCs all set up with audio and video editing set up, "out of the box", long before the iMac appeared.
- nakani, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14It may be more appropriate to say they redesign the wheel
- kaniz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Who stole what from who? - Who the hell cares.
If someone does X feature first, and Y community/OS/product wants it - as long as your not violating any patents/copyrights - then why not implement it?
Pretty much every game, application, piece of hardware, software, shoe, clothes, etc - has "copied" from somewhere else, and I find it stupid to give someone flak over it. If its good, and desired - then implement it, you'd be a fool to pass it up simply because someone else came up with it first. - Tiak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17"PCs were around, but they certainly did NOT have a windows based operating system or even a mouse."
-Oh yes, the GUI was TOTALLY original on Apple's part... Damn those time travelers at Xerox!
"I have been using Macs for about 15 years now.... NEVER once have i ever had virus software installed and NEVER once have i ever had a single virus on my system."
-Coincidentally I've been using Lynx for years, and have yet to get a single popup. - Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18"NEVER once have i ever had virus software installed"
If macs get more popular, you'll be sorry.
"and NEVER once have i ever had a single virus on my system."
For the same reason I never got a virus on my Amiga 500. It's not worth the time to write one for an OS used by less than 10% of the computers in the US. And for the record, the first virus was created on an Apple product:
http://machinist.salon.com/blog/2007/07/12/virus_birthday/index.html - axemachine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Or in Apple's case, something around 2% worldwide. shame
- honkeybot5k, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Didn't Jobs AND Gates both steal from Xerox and their PARC research facility?
- scooper86, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10woo i hate this comment system
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It's obvious Snarfy isn't an English major. But then again, the source he or she cited is Wikipedia, which should be the first hint.
The rule-of-thumb for determining whether to use who or whom is simply to substitute in another pronoun. If you find you’ve replaced who/whom with he, she, or they, who is correct. If you find you’ve replaced who/whom with him, her, or them, then whom is correct.
Le't check to see if this rule supports Snarfy's assertion. We'll replace the whos with he and they. Therefore, the title would become "He copied they." Sorry, wrong.
Let's check to see if whom is the correct last word. We'll replace who with he and whom with them. Therefore, the title would become, "He copied them." Ding ding ding, we have a winne.
Title should be - "Who copied whom." - pr0gr4m, on 11/10/2007, -3/+12Actually, didn't Microsoft do this (sort of) first, back in '95 with Microsoft Bob?
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I swore I bought a Dell, before the iMac was announced, that had all the software I needed to do all of those things!
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Or in Apple's case, less than 5% of the computers in the US.
- SOS84, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Didn't you know, Apples' business model is predicated around taking ideas from smaller more obscure companies, putting them is a pretty package, and throw their marketing spin on them. I wonder what Apples legal department's budget looks like. At least Microsoft does hide what they are rather than pretending to be something they are not.
- kettlechips, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Haven't you seen the new Spaces feature? That's whiz bang innovation!
- quaff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11One question.
Who the ***** cares? - Disclaimer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10My great ancestor, the one who invented walking, originally kept his walking on two feet a secret, but eventually others saw him and copied him. He couldn't do much, but in the long run it was better for mankind.
- strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8As a programmer, I look at other products I'm competing with, and include the same or better features. It's stupid not to (for the most part). I'll of course try to improve them, but their features are already a proven method that customers like, why ignore it just because they've used it?
- thelastknowngod, on 11/10/2007, -7/+15welcome to the clue train everyone... apple is far from being innovative.
- deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9If you google "the demo," it will show you the Doug Engelbart mouse demonstration. In true geek circles, it's not just any demo, it's THE demo. Google's search results are smart like that.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8No one likes it...
- tehkain, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Atleast avant admits it is using ideas from different places. Unlike apples great new innovation called Spaces!
- nakani, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8LOL @ people 'owning' ideas. What a crazy world we live in!
- nkassi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Well, no one said Linux didn't copy it. Actually they probably did. BUT, Apple can't claim they didn't copy either. Hell do you all forget the Xerox->Apple->Microsoft->Linux->Apple->Linux thing? I mean, frankly this is stupid, UI development is somewhat of a science, with principles and design that are obviously the best at the time. It's hardly the place where we see the largest amount of real innovation anymore.
- RogerStrong, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11MP3 players superior to the iPod were around before the iPod - they just didn't have the hype and fanboy base. Apple stole the iPod interface from Createive Labs, and lost the lawsuit.
Bill Gates was demonstrating an alpha version of Windows the year before the Mac came out. Yes, he saw the same demo at PARC.
Microsoft sold Word bundled with a mouse a year before the Mac came out. - GnKnight1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5HaHa! If you think shadow copy 7 is the same as Time Machine, then you really need to do some research! That's as bad as saying that ALL backup programs are exactly the same.
- rb89, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5Stop... grammartime! Shouldn't it be, "Who copied whom?"
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Microsoft's markets are more directed towards selling the OS. Apple is currently shooting towards the identity and the product. While linux is just there.
- ScreaminIke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5elinks? tabs, background downloads, better formatting. mouse-support (gpm). think about it. your web-experience will improve.
- i208khonsu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@anmol2k4
They actually stole their time machine from Steve Jobs too.
Honestly, does anybody really give a rats ass about who created what first? - mikesum32, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Actually, Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse. It had two wheels. Bill English worked for him and went Xerox PARC and he made the ball type mouse. That was from wikipedia. XEROX got a bunch of Apple shares as payment for the GUI idea. This was according to The Woz.
- simdac, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Dumb "People love Apple/Mac because they dumb down the PC." But for us, normal people a PC is just what we need. It may require a little more brain power, yes, but you get more for your money, there are actually programs that you can put on it as well as other stuff. As for security and if you're dissatisfied with Windows, you can alway get a free OS like ubuntu and the like. Do you go for the features or for the looks?
- DonPMitchell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And how many of these ideas were in CDC's Plato system even before then?
- nkassi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes, but XEROX stole it from the stanford's research labs.
- Egress99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You've all made my day. I am happy to see that some diggers aren't bastardizing the English language...
- green67, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4who knew?...it wouldn't be the first time though.....The "Moko" phone (stupid name..some lizard king guy...not a booger reference) was out before the iPhone as well...it might not be a "shiny apple" but it was definitely out first, is open source and looks pretty damn cool!...
how do ya' like them apples? ;)
http://www.openmoko.com/ - inkubux, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7me because I'm tired of hearing Apple fanboys thinking Apple is innovative and so much better that GOD
- tehkain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Compiz Fusion and beryl has had that ability since before spaces was even announced. Also yes we have pulseaudio, which is per application or workspace sound.
- PhillAholic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5This is fine, until companies take these things and patent them, and starting sue wars over things that aren't theirs to begin with. 200+ patents that they most likely don't even deserve.....but I won't name any "names"
- Matri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Linux have NEVER said "We did it first" or "We did it best". Apple is the one with the ego here.
- nailer, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3According to the comment above, no it shouldn't be.
But I've modded you up for 'Stop...grammartime!'. - nailer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hey! My site's still up! I have a TB of data a month, and I've hit the digg frontpage about five times in the last month without any problems. The few dollars I get from Google adwords don't pay for the hosting.
So could you please not post mirrors of my content when there's no need?
Thanks. -
