- zeitgueist, on 06/03/2008, -16/+97HOLY *****!!!!! A WEB SERVER THAT RUNS LINUX? NO ***** WAY MAN, NO WAY, GAME OVER MAN! WAIT HERE I'll BE BACK WITH REPORTERS!!!!11!!!!

gasoline is used to run automobiles - connorf, on 06/03/2008, -10/+43Told you so.
- Guvante, on 06/03/2008, -8/+32Honestly I am more surprised when I hear of Windows servers being used for gaming applications.
Games have a #1 factor of performance, due to lag being such a huge issue, and since *nix provides better performance at the cost of developer/maintainer difficulty (Not always true, but more often than not). - hocusposus, on 06/03/2008, -4/+27since when do you pay a monthly fee for psn?
- alexbaldwin, on 06/03/2008, -10/+27Penguin power!!!!
- Uhmerikan, on 06/03/2008, -3/+20The secret sauce tastes really good. Nice creamy texture!
- TheNeptune, on 06/03/2008, -7/+22Told us what? Diggers bash just about anything Sony all day long, especially the online experience. So a ***** service is run by Linux? Xbox Live is run by Windows. Xbox Live is by all accounts better... so... windows > linux?
I'm by no means a Microsoft lover (I'm actually one of those Apple crazies) but this sudden appreciation for Sony seems to be only out of convenience for boasting Linux --- any other day of the week, Sony is scum. - chazuk, on 06/03/2008, -1/+14"BitLocker Drive Encryption is a data protection feature available in Windows Vista Enterprise and Ultimate for client computers and in Windows Server "Longhorn"."

- Gutterpunk, on 06/03/2008, -0/+10Inefficiency from Sony's part? The day is truly ripe with incredible news!
- Dradis, on 06/03/2008, -2/+12Really. Linux has more than proved itself in the server role, and noone (outside of Redmond) is questioning that. Now if Sony used Linux for a sizable percentage of its workstations, that would be news.
- MWeather, on 06/03/2008, -2/+12Is Windows easy to manage for people unfamiliar with it? They'd be part of a botnet within an hour.
- Guvante, on 06/03/2008, -4/+13SQL connections are made to game boxes not end clients, so either the default 25 is sufficient or you can buy a few more access licenses.
IIS is not done in this way, instead they provide versions of Windows Server that have better administrative capabilities to get the big guns to pay more.
Windows Server itself only requires client licenses if you are connecting via Remote Desktop, making a VM, or doing a soft client thing. And even without licenses 2 people can remotely connect to Remote Desktop for administrative purposes. - sint4x, on 06/03/2008, -4/+12Your right, I hate installing new software from an application packaged with the OS.
I would rather troll download.com all day to find a shareware trial that might accomplish my task (for 30 days). - flashingcurser, on 06/03/2008, -3/+11Everquest 1&2, starwars galaxies, and others are (I'm pretty sure) what they are referring to.
- inajeep, on 06/03/2008, -1/+8Your making some pretty broad strokes with that Windows statement. Also, online gaming doesn't send graphics (custom maps excluded) through the network, it's positional data mainly so the OS shouldn't make a difference other than being able to keep up throughput of the data stream. The network architecture is more important than the OS of the servers.
- ferrariman60, on 06/03/2008, -4/+11Sigh, fine, I'll go get my surprised face.

What! Linux on a server, huh? Who'd a thunk it?!! - blah247, on 06/03/2008, -5/+11SOE Kills MMOs...

- mooninite, on 06/03/2008, -9/+15Easier than it is now? If it was made any easier it would mind read. Yes, it's incredibly easy now. I've converted several people over. They love it. (Fedora 9)
Bad example: You can get full disk encryption with a click of a mouse now. Can you get that in Windows *out of the box*? Nope, requires a third party download and install and configuration. - magamiako, on 06/03/2008, -8/+14I really hate articles like these, but what I dislike more are the comments.
The reality of the situation with the server market is this: When you absolutely desire to squeeze the most out of your hardware, you need an operating system that allows you to tweak core OS components for doing the task that you need it to do. There are many situations where Linux makes the perfect server OS because of this aspect alone. However, to be able to do it properly, the versions and flavors of "linux" used are extremely custom in-house tweaked settings that are built for a specific purpose. They don't do anything else. These game servers run the game server software and that's that.
Where Windows comes into play is when you need servers that require significantly better management capabilities, you don't have specialized applications and you have a lot of off-the-shelf software utilized in your business. Nobody's going to argue that an in-house tailored ticketing and incident tracking system isn't the best for the job, but the reality is you have a business to run and you don't have the time to wait for a developer to code something that might be broken and later down the road your developer ends up leaving the company and nobody can maintain it. So you choose something like Remedy or Heat, which I believe even Sony's admin here admitted they do in fact use.
Windows has a large and significant role to play in the server space, and so does Linux. And more importantly, Windows has an even larger role in the client space of IT.
It's a shame that most of the people that troll don't really understand this. - theaceoffire, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6FLAGRANT SYSTEM ERROR!

Restart Your Browser! - blah247, on 06/03/2008, -3/+9So he said they have 6000 - 7000 servers for their 100,000 simultaneous user base. Does that mean that Blizzard has a server farm of 60,000 - 70,000 servers to support a guessed average of 1,000,000 simultaneous users?
Doesn't sound like a very efficient job. - flashingcurser, on 06/03/2008, -3/+9What the hell are talking about? They are talking about MMORG's not web servers. I have always thought that everquest was run on proprietary unix, this article clears that up.
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -1/+6So it runs Linux, but the big question is: Who cares?
Seriously. What difference does it make what their servers run? - ShellShock11, on 06/03/2008, -3/+8Since when do Sony's online games work? Every online game I have played from Sony has been completely unreliable. SOE is horrible.
- eadnams, on 06/03/2008, -4/+9Sony's online games work? :o
- NiGHTSChao, on 06/03/2008, -5/+10Dugg for "Linux is the secret sauce"
- brundlefly76, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5Why is this news? I would have expected it would be Linux.
- TrancePhreak, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5Most inaccurate post I've seen yet.
- ptxyz, on 06/03/2008, -2/+7Screw Sony. I like this one better:
What Makes Blizzard's World Of Warcraft Work? Linux! - flashingcurser, on 06/03/2008, -1/+5I don't think the article was attacking windows. I, for one, would expect everquest to be run on HPUX, TRUE64, AIX, or Solaris. Linux is surprising. Windows NT wouldn't be in the realm of possibilities. Remember everquest started beta testing in 97 and was released 99.
- AriaGloris, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4Best social MMO ever!
- RedHawk911, on 06/03/2008, -1/+5Never had a single problem online with COD 4, Heck iv'e never had any problems at all online with the PS3, Not any big problems anyway. :)
- FutureGuy, on 06/03/2008, -1/+5Hope you like surprises. XBox live is consider far better then PSN on all accounts (except price since PSN is free, for a reason), I don't think XBox live runs Linux.
- poonaka, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4My OS is better than yours!
- Magnolit, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4I really miss the pre-CU era. :(
- faizal5k, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3nice try, but take your fanboyism somewhere else.
...the CoD4 problems were fixed a while ago. Also, the only problem I had with PSN was with GTA4 online on launch day. - zerhynn, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3Star Wars Galaxies? One of the greatest MMOs of all time until SOE RUINED it. It had so much potential before jedis were commonplace.
- kingmanic, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3*nix. my mistake. Similar roots.
- chris9902, on 06/03/2008, -8/+11"Can you get that in Windows *out of the box*? Nope"
Hmmm, yes you can.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsv ... - Seventus, on 06/03/2008, -2/+5I'm very surprised. Considering that it's Sony I would have expected something proprietary.
- vtblue, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3I can confirm that XBox Live does not run Linux :)
- xutopia, on 06/03/2008, -8/+11The reason why Sony can afford to offer their live service without monthly cost is because they don't have to pay for OS licences like MS does... oh wait!
- vtblue, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4As someone who works at Microsoft, I can say that daftman doesn't know a thing Microsoft Windows Server licensing. It's great that Sony uses Linux, but if you really want to know something, NCSoft powers their MMOs with Windows Server 2008 and it's all managed remotely via Powershell. A lot of the custom tools that Rizzo has likely developed over time has been possible from a manageability perspective for a while on Windows, namely remote deployment and configuration tools.
NCSoft is the company that operates City of Heroes, City of Villains, Guild Wars, Lineage, Aion, Lineage II, and recently released Tabula Rasa. - mike4410, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4good link!
