- icantdenythis, on 04/12/2009, -1/+67Free is a totally unplaceable accent
- amitait, on 04/12/2009, -1/+58Hi Digg!
My name is Amitay Tweeto...I'm the creator of this video :)
First of all I must say that I'm really excited to be on the front page (and hey, I'm not even mister baby man!).
Second, yes, my accent is just terrible. I know. It's option...not opchhhhen! :P
Third...I don't have Third.
I hope this video will raise the awareness for Linux and other open source products! - Vadi0, on 04/11/2009, -4/+59It's actually pretty good.
I also liked this one: http://vimeo.com/3771567 - yoshu, on 04/11/2009, -2/+42I had a feeling that one was going to win.
http://vimeo.com/3771567 is good but kinda scary. - ralphthemagi, on 04/12/2009, -3/+42Nothing beats the old IBM Linux ads:

And not Linux, but more Avery Brooks awesomeness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrFgRAcr0jg - Zera, on 04/12/2009, -8/+36DUDE, You have TWO DRIVES in your computer??????????
HOLY ***** - U83RMENSCH, on 04/12/2009, -2/+26Im a linux fan and frankly i didnt think that video did anything to help the linux community.. if they showed that on TV the average person would have no idea what they where talking about.
- BedPost, on 04/12/2009, -10/+34Uh. That's not a benefit of Linux, that's a benefit of having two HDDs and not being a dumbass. I've been doing that for years with Windows.
- infectaphibian, on 04/11/2009, -8/+29I have two drives in my computer, a boot drive and a drive wilth all of my music, videos, documents ect. Whenever a cool new linux distro comes out, I just install it on the boot drive (at no cost.) My wife is surprised that I can easily change my operating system whenever I want. It does give me a sense of freedom.
- phonedogjohn, on 04/12/2009, -0/+21I'm really surprised "Linux Pub" (one with the French surgeons) didn't win. That was fantastic.
- hamobu, on 04/12/2009, -1/+21I hated this commercial! To actually get what it implied in the commercial you had to know what is being talked about. This commercial would work just as well for feminine hygiene products as it does for an OS. I found this commercial too esoteric, too artsy, and too abstract. An average person has no chance of figuring out what the commercial is all about. When trying to introduce a largely unknown product, you would think it would make sense to at least mention that product in the commercial.
I do understand the idea of freedom and choice, but it is useless to preach to me. I have been converted and brainwashed long time ago.
And I hate to criticize a fellow foreigner, but I could not understand parts of the commercial due to the accent. You don't want accent to take attention away from the message (as nebulous as it is). - ethana2, on 04/12/2009, -0/+17Dust, Dust Sand, DarkRoom.. just change the theme, jake. ..like four clicks.
- Travelsonic, on 04/12/2009, -0/+15wbkang,
because more and more people switching to Linux in some minor way or another means nothing... sure.
/s - Travelsonic, on 04/12/2009, -1/+16"Except it's almost impossible for one person to make an entire GUI"
No it isn't... just time consuming. Your lack of wanting to go try it doesn't nullify this statement. - inactive, on 04/12/2009, -5/+20Ok, what is the message here? Is this supposed to make average computer user suddenly think "OMG, I never knew I was not free with MacOS/Windows" and instantly switch over to Linux? And by the way the add completely forgets to explain what Linux is.
- foxmulder881, on 04/12/2009, -1/+15I didn't really like this winning video. But I never seen any other entries to compare it with.
I just find it doesn't really show what linux is all about. Perhaps that's the idea. - Myztry, on 04/12/2009, -5/+19I liked the video and it's message. I can't help but be annoyed by the 'cotton ball in cheek' accent though...
- LoneWolf01, on 04/12/2009, -2/+15Then you make a nicer one. You're allowed to.
- brianpeiris, on 04/12/2009, -2/+15Distributions like Ubuntu are increasingly console free (unless you want to use the command line, of course)
Your argument, while valid, won't last very long. - ethana2, on 04/12/2009, -0/+11I have a mac. It doesn't have Ubuntu's built in free app store and categorized apps, and I'm too lazy for that crap.
Plus Ubuntu runs on everything and you can just download it. OS X you have to go buy and then it basically only runs on Apple computers... screw that.
OS X has the best default gui, but with gnome-do docky and gnome-globalmenu... not for long. - sfury, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10Sweet, but the Shodan-esque voice creeps me too.
- DBeta, on 04/12/2009, -2/+12With Windows, to change to a non-stock theme using the built in theme engine you have to break the terms of service. You have to forcefully break Windows to do what you should be able to do already. Sure, you can use another window manager, but then you get a fugly mismatch of styles. I'm not saying I expect everyone to go out and design their own theme, desktop engine, or display manager, but it is certainly more possible and far easier on Linux.
- foxmulder881, on 04/12/2009, -0/+10Nobody is forcing you to use the command-line mate. It's simply there for those who wish to take advantage of it.
- rnawky, on 04/12/2009, -4/+13I knew I had a different option... Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, the possibilities are endless!
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+9on De Desktop
- rnawky, on 04/12/2009, -2/+11Saying that 600 Linux distros is 600 different possibilities is like saying there's a different version of Windows every time a user changes the settings.
Sure, there may be 600 different distros, but how many of them have completely different kernels?
It's all the same basic underlying architecture, basically you have Debian, Redhat, Slackware, and maybe some other small ones.

ie. Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xbuntu, Ubuntu Studio, is all the same OS. Just because I switched from Aero to the classic Windows theme doesn't make it an entire different system. - Slade605, on 04/12/2009, -0/+9My parents have been on ubuntu for the past 2 months, Only 1 call from them, because they forgot their password.
- AllTooHuman, on 04/12/2009, -0/+9Evidently this user is unaware that hundreds of free themes are available for download, many of which are quite "aesthetically pleasing."
- bytor4232, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8I made my GNOME install look just like Leopard. Saw some guy make his desktop look just like Vista (Aero).
Linux is as aesthetically pleasing as any of the distinguished competition. - wigren, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8I wasn't going to click on your spam the first time, but when you posted again.... well, you got me.
- zivtzi, on 04/12/2009, -1/+9I'm proud of you Amitay! :)
- Paranormalized, on 04/12/2009, -3/+11I can't say I'm surprised that they picked an entry that emphasized the "free as in speech" side, but it's a poor choice if they want to convince people to switch to Linux.
The fact is, the vast majority of computer users don't care in the slightest about "software freedoms". Rather than talk about the philosophical ramifications of your choice in OS, they would do better to give an idea of what Linux is and practical reasons why you would want to use it. - tgc1, on 04/12/2009, -1/+9That one is kinda creepy. Sort of half expected her to say "You will be assimilated..."
- franksands, on 04/12/2009, -1/+9I am free, used windows, Mac and Linux and FreeBSD for a little while. I *chose* windows. It does everything I need. True freedom is having noone nagging you about how Y operating system is the only one worth your while.
- Kenelm, on 04/12/2009, -0/+7Here it is: http://videos.linuxfoundation.org/video/1154
I totally agree. - awhiteflame, on 04/12/2009, -0/+7I didn't like this either..for the same reason.
In my heart you'll never beat this one though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwL0G9wK8j4
(Also great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJe2Hxgw7Wg ) - TrevorPace, on 04/12/2009, -7/+14But at a cost. Are you going to be getting Windows 7 for free when it comes out without having to go to a store to buy it?
Well I will be when Ubuntu 9.04 comes out. - DAC1138, on 04/12/2009, -1/+7Same here. I was about to say "sadly, most of these were probably created in Windows or on a Mac."
I'm a video editor, and there's nothing on linux that compares to Final Cut on a mac or the Adobe suite on windows. I use linux 99% of the time, but when a video must be edited, I have to blow off the cobwebs on my windows partition and boot it up. - ChileanGoD, on 04/12/2009, -1/+7"And by the way the add completely forgets to explain what Linux is."...
Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing. - eugene2k, on 04/12/2009, -2/+8The user might not switch to linux, but the image of linux will become a little more positive in their eyes, and the user might become a little more open to the idea of trying out a linux distro even though she heard it's very hard.
- SuicideMouse, on 04/12/2009, -0/+6Think about it like this: You go out and meet a girl that you really like, you feel she's "just the right girl for you" and she really likes you, you spend time with her really getting to know her. After a while the two of you start dating and become a great couple (otherwise you realize she's not what you want and you find another girl). You two soon make love and the sex is amazing but the fact that you love her and feel so close to her makes it even better. You're really happy with what you've got going for you right now with this pleasantly evolving relationship but also understand that in the future you may feel differently and someone else might be a better match for you. For now though, everything is great.
OR
You pay a hooker 20$. You ***** and it could be alright sex, but until you get that phone call you're really hoping that burning is just a bladder infection. You also don't get to ***** again unless you want to cough up another 20$. You might not want a relationship right now but if you do you're getting upset that none of these hookers seem to care about you and the loneliness is getting to you, no amount of self-loathing and ***** seems to take this away. The phone rings. You also have herpes. - LostOverThere, on 04/12/2009, -2/+7I have nothing against the winning entry. But seriously, the French Surgeon one was the best:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xceiMJSunIg - dhughes, on 04/12/2009, -1/+6 Which free your wallet of many, many dollars unless you illegally download them which you pretty much have to unless you want to buy, or rather license i.e. "rent", them for $1,000 just to play with pictures.
- ArrangedEntropy, on 04/12/2009, -2/+7I think they should add more voices and more accents...all saying the same at the same time. Powerful.
- dbz253, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5i kinda liked this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_0oWqOLpo4 - ThantiK, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5You use the right tool for the right job. If you have a hammer every problem starts looking like a nail. Linux users understand this.
- leexy, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5Eastern Europe.
- drufus, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5Great job sir! Ignore the comments about your accent, it's fine. Some folks on this site haven't left their city limits yet, or know such diversity exists. I think it highlights that Linux is a global movement of folk from around the world that want all the things you mention in your vid. Once again, congratulations on your win!
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5This ad still gives me shivers. Thanks for the post!
- compulsive1, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5 We all like optchins!
