- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35"..is this Vista??"
it clearly surpasses vista's graphical interface, and all without needing a super high end pc.... (i used to run XGL on a p3 with a geforce2 worked flawlessly) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21The question is: do you really want to see/hear people boasting about their desktops?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10cd $ /xvidcap
./configure
make
make install
xvidcap
That's what it usually is. - kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Just cause something has the word linux in the title don't mistake that for an invite to come start a flame war, specially if you have nothing to back up your claims
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The xvidcap install directions are wrong. The command should be ./configure, not ./compile
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Windows users do it all the time. Why is it a crime when other users want to?
Windows - Here's how little I can do with paying hundreds of dollars.
Linux - Here's how much more I can do without paying any money. - AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6absolutely :)
- onnoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like Wink. It's much more user friendly than Pyvnc2swf or Istanbul, IMHO. It can record audio too and it has very nice editing functions, like adding menus and text boxes.
I couldn't get it to record a Compiz desktop, though. - ThirstyFerret, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10If you're a devout Windows user, then no probably not. But, Linux can look lovely sometimes so it's good to show it off :P
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use the vidcap plugin in beryl itself. It saves as .seom but can be converted using your standard tools (eg ffmpeg)
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5why not do both?
- popey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The problem (for me) is that pyvnc2swf and wink both make flash videos (which you can then convert to mpeg with "ffmpeg -i movie.flv movie.mpeg") which means the quality can sometimes be lacking. Istanbul records direct to OGG which has the advantage that it is a free format, but is difficult to convert to something else. I use xvidcap for all the screencasts I have made. It can record to MPEG2 video which is very easy to then further convert to other formats. xvidcap is also a lot more configurable (right now) than vnc2swf, recordmydesktop, istanbul, screenkast, wink or any of the others :)
- Invid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can, but most vendors will make you jump through hoops to get it. That only applies to prebuilt boxes though. You have always been able to buy No-OS barebones machines though.
- nickishappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can do this and have been able to for a while. In fact you can buy an MSI or ASUS laptop without ram, hd, etc, and buy those parts off of newegg for example. This is a the closest thing to a white box laptop as you can get at the moment, but is still better than buying retail. And there is no preloaded OS.
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice list. Unfortunately, I'm still very much a novice on my Ubuntu distro, though I'm learning a lot more each day. Istanbul installs through Synaptic (apt frontend), but when run, does nothing - the command line hangs, like something's happening, but nothing ever comes up. Xvidcap has given me this error for a while now:
xvidcap: error while loading shared libraries: libavformat.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I've read what I can find on the error through Google, but can't make much sense of it. I've installed ffmpeg through Synaptic as well, and the sparse documents that relate talk of compiling with certain flags, and other things still currently above my level of understanding. Sigh... - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who asked you? Your "real facts" are your vague opinion, and an obviously stupid one at that.
Take your trolling time and use it running those 50 third party apps to "secure windows". - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the UK you can buy from Zepto Computers, it's where my next laptop is coming from. They offer laptops without an OS installed.

I don't want to be paying the "Windows tax" for an OS I'll either just use for games or just not use at all. Pretty cheap laptops too. - pianohacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bahahaha. So you like extolling the virtues of Windows, but not enough to actually _use_ it? To me, that either seems like gross hypocrisy or just being a troll. Unless you're saving up your money to buy XP?
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oops, I'm retarded and posted the comment above in the wrong place. Sorry, please bury.
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Great, now we can look forward to a thousand more videos of desktop cubes and transparent windows. Like we haven't seen it all already.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Vista knocks off OS X and KDE in its window decorations and visual effects, and Linux, BSD and OS X in its features.
Vista has:
a bad knockoff of Aqua
a bad knockoff of the KDE sidebar
a bad knockoff of beagle/spotlight
a bad knockoff of Xgl/AIGLX and Apple's OpenGL stuff
a bad knockoff of SuperKaramba/GDesklets
a bad knockoff of XUL GUIs
a bad knockoff of online package repository-based updates
a bad knockoff of Cairo
a bad knockoff of linux/Os X firewall configuration tools
a bad knockoff of Firefox
a bad knockoff of Bonjour
and a bad knockoff of BitLocker
...and will happily claim each one of those are its own "inventions" despite them coming after the competition - those are right off the top of my head, there are probably many more, so whilst you might think that "Who's copying who?! Haha!" is making a great point, you just make Vista look more sorry and sad.
Vista is shining evidence of what Microsoft's strategy on innovation is, and always has been - "Notice someone else doing something innovative, and throw vast amounts of time/money at copying it as well as we can" - there are constant examples of this, through every single Microsoft product line I can think of.
You can try and tout the "crap is better than good stuff!!" argument all you like - users of Linux and OS X have had access to these "Amazing Vista Innovations!!" for years on OS X and Linux, where they were really thought of, and done better at that.
Who's copying who?
Microsoft is copying everyone else. - manray7, on 09/28/2008, -0/+0The free online screencast service www.screentoaster.com is compatible with Linux.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@ThirstyFerret :
Windows users don't _need_ to boast about their desktop. They are comfortable with it and actually _use_ it instead of spending their time tweaking. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't use any security applications since I don't use Windows. Your point?
- eNote, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Been loading up Linux flavours on VMware guests just to try things out and they look just like Vista. Now whos copying who? I would love to buy a laptop with Linux preloaded but Microsoft won't allow it. In fact I don't think you can buy any laptop without an OS.
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3This is really old....
edit: well not /really/ old but still old - MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Is that a request?
- sewalsh, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3* yawn *
promoting a screen cast app so you can show off your OS to you friends?
why don't you just show them your dick. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I got dugg down, but that's only because there are plenty of Linux zealots on Digg who have nothing better to do. I know the _real_ facts here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3That is surely true, however Windows XP is stil streets ahead of Linux and it'll be many years before that changes.
