Ask Asus how much trouble they have selling their little Linux laptops. - DeathJux, on 03/12/2008, -2/+44Asus isn't selling their computers in cheap retail outlets in rural lands across America, and Asus also isn't targetting the "Wal-Mart" demographic. People that can work a computer can still buy a Linux PC from Wal-Mart's website, but Billy Jo can't strut into the store and food-stamp his way into Linux glory, only to furrow his brow in a vain attempt to understand the magic box once it's at home.
- DeathJux, on 03/12/2008, -1/+31I want to see a physical manifestation of Wal-Mart shoving computers off shelves.
- DeathJux, on 03/12/2008, -2/+30Linux: Clean Up Your Dirty Windows™.
- mnpilot, on 03/12/2008, -4/+25That's because most people that go to Wal*mart think Linux is a spray on window cleaner in a bottle, not an alternative to Windows.
Idiots. - ArthurSucks, on 03/12/2008, -5/+25I don't get it... Every time there is a super diss to Linux it's by some digger with a vista icon. Is it like a cult or what?!
- mathchemist, on 03/12/2008, -0/+16Go to Walmart with a video camera, push one off a shelf and get it on tape. Then post the video of you getting arrested on Youtube and submit the link to Digg. I promise you'll make front page.
- tossayo, on 03/12/2008, -0/+13You...need a computer...to buy a computer. Somehow this won't work in some cases.
- blackbeardtron, on 03/12/2008, -0/+13And How!
- woodcoxcb, on 03/12/2008, -9/+19I am a consumer whore!
- ExSlashdotter, on 03/12/2008, -1/+11I nominate you for best comment of the day.
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -2/+12Digg needs to get rid of the "I swear it's new" button.
- mizike, on 03/12/2008, -14/+24Maybe it's because linux simply isn't ready for the desktop?? I'm sure ubuntu will get there one day tho, wake me up when virulent vulture or zesty zebra hits....
seriously tho, call walmart shoppers retards all you want; but joe user doesn't want to deal with ***** like having to drop to the command line and typing in "apt-get/yum install program_name"; I know i'll get dugg down hardcore for this post, but that won't make KDE or GNOME's crippling user interface issues go away.... - mdude85, on 03/12/2008, -3/+12I agree -- it's not that Linux isn't ready for desktop. Linux isn't ready for mainstream. And WalMart gave it a chance too, which says a lot.
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -0/+8I use it to clean my monitor.
- searchdestroy, on 03/12/2008, -1/+9OMG, conspiracy! Soccer moms will never know the greatness of Linux now!
- TheBuzzKiller, on 03/12/2008, -1/+8Pretty friggen sweet ... especially with Ubuntu
- daftman, on 03/12/2008, -6/+13Dupe? There are like 20 different submissions on the same news including the one that hit the front page.
- yaggermr, on 03/12/2008, -6/+13Linux isn't for the masses there's fifty versions of it floating around all different operating systems it took my mom two years to adjust from windows 98 to windows xp. That doesn't mean Linux sucks it just means people hate change or things unfamiliar to them. Linux has a long way to go hopefully a more unified Linux can emerge.
- DeathJux, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6You know, they don't let you wander the store with a video camera, but you CAN bring your own tapes and use their cameras in the display area. An added bonus is that no one thinks you're actually recording, so people will do all sorts of wacky and incriminating things.
At one Wal-Mart, the camera display was right next to a T-Mobile booth, so my friend and I interviewed the T-Mobile rep working there. Our questions mainly consisted of various fights between corporate entities and hurricanes: "Wal-Mart versus a hurricane, who wins?" He got pissed off in a hurry. - thcobbs, on 03/12/2008, -1/+7No, basically they are taking their lower-moving items off the shelves and replacing them with faster-moving ones. At the store, Wal-Mart pays the shipping. But if they have a large stock and don't want to pay the shipping and tracking costs to the end stores, they just sell them online. That way they aren't out the extra margin.
- BroWren, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5When was the last time any of you people even saw a Linux setup, let alone a modern Ubuntu installation? 1995?
Please. Compared to how every software installation on Windows uses some random installer, and how difficult fixing a screwed-up installation is, Ubuntu's add/remove apps screen (which is a GUI, duh) is LIGHT-YEARS ahead of the mess that is Windows. You bring up the application manager, you check the boxes next to what you want, and it installs. If you want it gone, you uncheck the box, and it uninstalls. No screwing around with broken Installshield links or dicking around in System32 to find precisely the right mix of DLLs to get it to run. If an app has dependencies they get automatically installed and uninstalled as well. EVERYTHING you've criticized was true about a decade ago, but it is not so anymore and pretending that it's still like that makes all of the comments here nothing but FUD. - sadilak, on 03/12/2008, -2/+6The reason why eee PC is selling so well is because it is reaching its target audience - The geek or the business user. Walmart 's market is housewives and in general people who want everything handed to them in a platter. With Linux , drivers are always an issue and for the average male or average housewife, it is a chore
- pintomp3, on 03/12/2008, -5/+9osx = ron paul. digg goes nuts when the market share surges to a whopping 5%.
- thechitowncubs, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4You've got something there, make some graphics and you'll be famous.
- andrewtheart, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4I can't believe I get this reference
- peestandingup, on 03/12/2008, -3/+7The Eee PC is selling because its cheap as hell, not because it has Linux on it. Yes, I know that makes it cheaper overall, but its not the real reason.
Basically what Im saying is you could throw any decent OS on it & if the price doesn't change it'll still sell. - xptoast, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5I dugg you down because you dont understand {:)
Reasons Linux are liked: Free, Innovative, Free from Microsoft, Part of open source community, stuff that goes with freedom - thechitowncubs, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5The average consumer is not the same as the average Wal Mart consumer...
- jawnboy, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4I buried you for being an *****, which has nothing to do with linux.
- mdude85, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5I'm pretty sure that even when the average consumer walks into WalMart, he doesn't expect the best customer service, or even any customer service at all. That probably wasn't a very big factor.
- Ratteler, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3Truth hurts. Don't it Cledus?
- MaximusD, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3I'm gonna try to switch to Linux once I get a break from school...
- TheBuzzKiller, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4Who cares? I only saw one
- mhearne, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4How do they know they don't want it if they've never seen it?
- DeathJux, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3This was years ago, I'm pretty sure the tape has been lost in the sands of time. Sorry.
- nuvem, on 03/12/2008, -2/+5How apt-ly put!
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3Are you drunk? All the drivers are already there on the eee pc just switch it on and go.
- misterjangles, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4Whether or not Linux is ready for the desktop, I think the average Walmart shopper probably sees it the same as if they were buying a Sony stereo vs. some unknown brand. They probably just want to get the best computer for their money that will help them get an office job, play games or whatever. They're not looking to join the revolution.
- CovardeAnonimo, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3mind uploading to youtube and posting the link ?
- JQP123, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4"That doesn't mean Linux sucks it just means people hate change or things unfamiliar to them."
Maybe it means that most people prefer technology that accomodates them rather than vice versa.
A manual auto transmission is more efficient but lots of people pay more for automatic because it's easier. You may not like it but then the marketplace doesn't really care what you like. Anyone hoping to get their product into the hands of lots of people *will* address this issue or fail. - Phocion55, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4I agree. Vacation was a great movie.
- djauto23, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I'm gonna try to upgrade my laptop and PC from Feisty once the easter holidays starts.
- rbond, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Something that I have noticed is that although Wal-mart has said that they are still selling this product online, their website has indicated that it is not sold online. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_ ...
- Ellipsys, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I agree with you that most people couldn't care about the OS, but aside from raising the price, the default "easy mode" on the Eee is probably one of the easiest to use interfaces in existence. Big, colorful icons, nothing behind the scenes, and flawless execution. This is the reason its selling to "the computer is an appliance, like the toaster" individuals. I have a feeling it would be more difficult/costly to create this interface on Windows. Now, Linux is the reason that its selling to the ever-growing geek population. So I think Linux certainly plays a part in its sales.
- matx, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Linux is only powerful once you drop into the command line :P
- yunus, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Excellent point. If only some large corporation that has stores all across America would try to sell it to them. Maybe then mainstream America would want it.
- newwatch51, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Yes, it's condescending, but it's true
- Ratteler, on 03/12/2008, -1/+3Thank you for having a brain, and keeping turned on. :-D
- FutureGuy, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2If that is true then dell, hp and others haven't got that news yet, they still make a ton of desktops.
