- firo85, on 09/23/2008, -3/+39I run X on Y with Z. That is the best way, don't even argue with me!
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -2/+22Love Virtual box.
Its nice running windows inside Linux and be able to use both at the same time while keeping running threads down to just 16. (I use a custom version of XP lite) - neowolfwitch, on 09/23/2008, -0/+14I've been using xVM/Virtualbox for months now, and just upgraded to the newest. It does a fantastic job of allowing me to run XP on my Linux boxes. The integration with the host OS is superb (clipboard and mouse pointer synchronization, host shared folders, USB support). And- it's FREE, with no tinkering between stripped-down free "Client" and "Server" versions like the competition.
Oh, and before the usual "Why are you running Windows at all- idiot!" messages come up... I need it for Outlook, for which there STILL isn't a decent Linux substitute in a corporate environment.
One sad thing (irony)- XP runs better in the virtual environment than it did as the primary OS on my laptop. - TonyMurray, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11nLite - http://www.nliteos.com
It allows you to strip parts of the OS (specifically XP) out among other things. - oscarolim, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10What I really like to do is run Win 3.1 on Dosbox inside Linux which is inside Windows which is inside MacOS.
- OutsideofDreams, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9I can think of many reasons to run Windows in a VM. Wine is great, but one may need to test any number of programs in a "true" Windows environment.
- fatlip, on 09/23/2008, -1/+10so basically its the ONLY one you've ever used.
- neowolfwitch, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7Try running Outlook in Wine... Go ahead, I'll wait...
Now, try running Evolution in an Exchange 2007 environment... Once again, I'll wait...
Seriously though- that's the only reason I run XP in a VM. I don't have a choice if I want to keep my Linux desktop in the corporate world I work in. - collution, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7Yea, nLite works miracles, good stuff.
- num3thod, on 09/23/2008, -1/+7Where can I get this custom XP lite you speak of?
- CeeJayDK, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6Just to clarify ..
You :
run X Window http://www.x.org/
on Y oper : http://www.yoper.com/
with Z shell : http://www.zsh.org/
Makes sense to me. Good Choice! - Otto, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6Why the hell would email have fonts? This ain't the 90s, pal. Email is plain text only.
Email with HTML in it goes straight into the trash, and most people will never see it. Friends don't let friends send HTML email. - morepowerr, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5How ever get a virtual video to support DX9+ will win end of story. At that point just give me a embedded linux with built in VM. And I can use any OS I like all at the same time.
I can see it now spashtop VM - santasing, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Right, everything is in the settings tab. I am surprised you knew to turn on booting up from the CD/DVD drive or your ISO but didn't see the sound checkbox or the USB checkbox.
- moduc, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5USB mouse just works for me in OpenSuse 11 + VirtualBox 1.6 or 2.0.
However, I experienced Windows XP guest crashes/freeze the 1st run (and runs fine later on) in 2.x, so I have to go back to 1.6. - piranhaa, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4I've been running VirtualBox under Opensolaris snv95 for the last month or so and I've been extremely impressed. It's been hosting a Windows Server 2003 install with Exchange and Blackberry Enterprise Server (for myself) without a single hickup. Having ZFS and VirtualBox on the same installation is really nice.
- macbayboy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4nLite is awesome for setting up a VM. I can get XP SP3 to boot in 10 seconds from BIOS screen to Desktop.
- mcrules, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4When running WoW make sure you add -opengl or you will get crap performance. Seriously it works better in Wine than in XP!
- Arghblarg, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4I love VirtualBox, but still can't move away from Windows until they support ieee1394 pass-through like they do with USB. Musicians and video producers need this to use a lot of windows-only Firewire audio gear (I'm looking at YOU, Alesis.. make some Linux drivers already!!)
I've posted a thread on the VirtualBox forums, if you want iee1394 support, PLEASE go there and make your voice heard. The VirtualBox team seems to think no one uses it. - scabbers, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Dosbox is for games you heretic ;)
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3The author states that VirtualBox is equal with VMware Workstation. I hope he meant to state VMware Server, because VirtualBox (along with everyone else) has a long way to go to equal Workstation.
- Bean888, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3On my setup (Host is XP SP2) Vista on VirtualPC 2007 SP1 is incredibly slow, but Vista on VirtualBox runs smooth.
- Awspire, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3Did Virtualbox add drag and drop from host to guest? If not, then thats a no go in my book. VM apps should have drag and drop implemented prior to even going public. I've found VMware to be the best, but Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 SP1 is fantastic for XP and Vista VM's, plus its also free --> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamil ...
- hurdboy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Nope. 10gb, pre-allocated. The installer barfs trying to untar the different sets, giving FS write errors.
- ffejrey, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2You need to enable IO APIC and Hyper-V or whatever in the advanced settings tab.
- mrBitch, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2RE: " When running WoW make sure you add -opengl or you will get crap performance. Seriously it works better in Wine than in XP! "
This is ridiculous but true. Wow under WINE runs faster than it does under a full Windows install (with no graphic glitches to be seen). - inajeep, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2I am still learning Virtualbox but I was unable to get the 64 bit version of Unbuntu as a guest on my Vista 64 big OS. Still, I'm not giving up on it. It runs my XP guest fine minus the VPN software.
- sodade, on 09/23/2008, -7/+9I have used VMWare for years and so when I decided to install Ubuntu on my main PC, I figured I'd give VirtualBox a spin. I spent 2hrs figuring out how to get my USB mouse working in a VM. I only figured it out by doing multiple searches and finding different threads on forums discussing it - some of the "solutions" didn't work and by the time I found the right one, I couldn't even tell you what the problem was. When I installed another ubuntu in a VM, it failed to connect to my network but there are no error conditions that I can determine. I guess that I'll fix this problem the next time I have a couple spare hours.
Boo Hoo for me eh? I hate to be all crybaby about it, and if I were 22 again, I'd stay up all night figuring this and 50 other things out, but I am just disappointed when I fail at doing something that "just works" in windows. - tonyevans, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Virtual box works fast even though my cpu has no virtualisation extensions. That is impressive.
- mrBitch, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2RE: " Vista on VirtualPC 2007 SP1 is incredibly slow, but Vista on VirtualBox runs smooth. "
How can that be? How can an Open Source program run FASTER than a commercial (free to download) product from Microsoft?
/sarcasm - RobotBuddha, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Are the graphics fast enough? Lack of guest drivers seemed to be the main bottleneck when I was using it back in the day.
- Icetype, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2What are you talking about? It has profiles for tons of distros to make them work effortlessly. I use an Ubuntu VM. But also Windows XP / Vista / 2003 server / 2000 as VMs. They all work great.
- theaceoffire, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2WoW runs *better* in Wine than it does in Windows dude.
Seriously, faster load times and stuff. - oscarolim, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2I play solitaire with my friends on windows 3.1 :p
- mcrules, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1It does work, except for visualisations, it works perfectly
- cheungroys, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1oh wow... damn it. i just purchased VMware Workstation ACE... and I'm using the beta version which has "Unity mode" but i was disappointed when the VMware Tools didn't support Fedora and started to crash... oh well. i guess i will VirtualBox from now on...
- kibbledbits, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1It's free and runs on Mac's OS X, Linux or Windows.
- NJank, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1I like using a VM to test out liveCD iso's. I would kill to be able to have guest addition features available (shared folders, etc.) while running a liveCD. Unfortunately, you install guest additions via a .iso file, and previous versions only let a VM have one mounted optical drive.
- sandiegodude, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1My big question is, can it handle complex private networking between VM's? I use VMWare Server at work for hosting a multitude of different servers and desktop OS's (Custom flavored Linux Distros, Server 2003, RHL4 w/ SQUID Proxy, Win XP) and VMWare's networking options are absolutely fantastic, all hosted off a beefy Ubuntu box. There are definite limitations to VMWare server that irk the hell out of me, mostly only being able to run only a single host gateway on one VMNet at a time. I was able to work around that via running a Vyatta server, but it's still a lot of extra hassle and wasted CPU cycles that would be easily remedied with multiple host gateways.
- antdude, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1I gave up on VMware since I couldn't get v5.5.8 to work in my Debian:
http://groups.google.com/group/vmkernelnewbies/bro ... and http://communities.vmware.com/message/1045637 ... :( - bowens44, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1I run windows in linux because I need windows for my job. I support web applications that require internet explorer and .net framework. It's great to be able to run windows in a window.
- Vadi0, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1I use it 15 mins a day for compiling the program for Windows. Compiling seems to have sped up...
- sodade, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Right, the problem with USB was much deeper than that and involved me editing some conf file. I suspect that solving my network problem will require more of the same...
- Virgule, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2I hear you. Im used to _love_ fixing my systems up. I went as far as crapping it out on purpose so I had something to fix.. Today I can't care less about troubleshooting; if it crash its gone.
BTW I have good luck with VirtualBox. No bad news so far ^_^ - mrBitch, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1@krum, maybe you should read the config options when creating your virtual machine, instead of wildly clicking all over the screen and hoping that it works by magic.
- hurdboy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1I've only been messing with it for a few days (the version that's in Debian Lenny), and haven't been able to get NetBSD to even install, much less run. :-/ When I have some time, maybe I'll screw with it some more.
Am patiently awaiting the release of the free Hyper-V for another machine, however. - hufman, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Sun actually released the second update to its virtualization program.
- unabatedshagie, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Does anyone know if I can run itunes inside virtualbox so I can sync my iphone without rebooting?
Last I heard only vmware worked. - Haplo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1How to install the PUEL edition on Ubuntu: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2008/11/27/virtualbox-p ...
