- acemilo, on 06/30/2009, -0/+43Downloading now, if this works dependably then there really is no reason to dual boot.
- Nephersir7, on 07/01/2009, -3/+39Does aero work in Vista/7 ? If it does, that means there is no real advantage for me to virtualize linux in windows over the opposite....
- custangro, on 06/30/2009, -1/+32Finally...
Virtualbox has SMP support!
-C - dafin0, on 07/01/2009, -0/+30when running the beta of vitrualbox 3.0.0 aero wasn't supported claiming that the video card drivers didn't support it. and i dont know why people are digging you down, there seams to be a hate against poeple who ask questions at digg
- RoboDonut, on 07/01/2009, -0/+28Hardware graphics acceleration and SMP in the same release?
Looks like I've got a partition to delete. - pinchduck, on 07/01/2009, -0/+27Glad to see that VirtualBox wasn't killed by Oracle, it is a great product.
- mooninite, on 07/01/2009, -0/+17Yep.
dd if=/dev/sda2 of=windows.img (that's if sda2 is your Windows partition)
Wait about 10 minutes. Then use "VBoxManage convertfromraw windows.img windows.vdi" to convert the raw image into a VDI file. - wmuldoon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+16Yea, cause the 2nd comment:
"Finally...
Virtualbox has SMP support!"
.... - kennethsteven1, on 07/01/2009, -3/+14Crysis?
- sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -1/+12How are those games working out on your MacMini? (just a thought)
- techtock, on 07/01/2009, -1/+11http://www.virtualbox.org/
- vuke69, on 07/01/2009, -0/+10But then Oracle bought Sun, so his concern is valid.
- midtown, on 07/01/2009, -1/+11You're doing it wrong.
- Sepeteus, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8\o/
Wait... Is it fast and usable or too slow for actual use? - antdude, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8How fast are the games in it though?
- sej7278, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8Way faster than Server2.
- mrBitch, on 07/01/2009, -2/+9Really really fast. That fast enough for you?
- Hortnon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+7SMP is awesome, and I'm also happy they fixed CentOS guests on AMD processors.
- sej7278, on 07/01/2009, -2/+9LOL, only Digg would think that the MAJOR new feature is experimental DirectX support and not SMP!
I've been using betas of 3.0.0 for weeks and didn't even notice the 3D stuff (just tried and it doesn't seem to work on Win2003 guests) I was too busy trying out quad core Solaris and Linux guests. - Ellipsys, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6Am I correct that this is the first of the major virtual machines on windows and linux to support 3D acceleration and SMP? Last I heard, only VMWare Fusion could do this, and that was only for Mac.
- sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6Good one.
How rare is it you have to do that in linux though? - RobotBuddha, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6LAST, of the 'last updates' :) But someone figured out what was going wrong, and I wanted to pass that on for anyone having the same problem.
The big trick is that after the upgrade, you do have to install the new guest additions. But, you have to reboot windows into safe mode before doing that installation or the direct3d drivers won't get in along with everything else.
After doing that my direct3d is showing as enabled in directx diagnostics. - Frostek, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6custangro - "Yay....I was quoted! :-)"
And again!
Hey, you're getting to be emminently quotable these days... - dawnraid101, on 07/01/2009, -1/+7Thank god you didn't add a "But can it run"
- Hortnon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6Seems to be. Ubuntu boots up pretty fast, that's for sure, and is really responsive.
- pathy, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6Or if you enjoy games with decent textures, or running at a higher res with AA.
- custangro, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Yay....I was quoted! :-)
- TopBanana, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6Is it as fast as VMWare?
- mrBitch, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5iGrinch, I think you misunderstood what techdever was after.
He wants to know if you can "point" a VM to an existing bootable partition, so that you can have the choice of booting (say) Windows 7 RC native, or (at any time, without losing anything in the transition) then boot that same OS partition as a VM within VirtualBox.
This is something that vmware fusion and parallels both have working quite well under OS X. - sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -3/+8So Steam and the original Half-Life are installed, on running Half-Life I'm getting this:
"The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but the color quality of the virtual display is currently set to 16 bit.
Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select a 32 bit color mode, if it is available, for best possible performance of the virtual video subsystem."
Then just the splash screen, and nothing. It freezes.
The color mode in the XP guest already is 32 bit. - sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -3/+8So I added the repository and key, apt-getted virtualbox-3.0 and installed, now both my old and new versions of virtual box are gone. What the crap.
Digg probably isn't the right forum for this.
edit: Logout / login did the trick. Now to install Steam and give TF2 a try. I'll report back. - mooninite, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5moduc, copying all the files inside of the partition is tedious and not the right way to go. Don't suggest it or do it yourself. Use 'dd' or another clone tool.
No, it won't change the hardware "issue" since when you run VirtualBox or any VM tool it will use virtual motherboard devices. It won't look like your original machine to the OS.
P.S. You can't reliably clone a Windows partition while running from the Windows partition. That's why I suggested 'dd' since I assumed he was dual-booting. - Hortnon, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6To be fair...That's really the only one, so I'd say sej still has a point.
- techdever, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Can you run a virtualized version of your already installed windows os in virtualbox for linux yet? and after you're done, can you boot natively to that windows installation? (something like bootcamp for non-macs)
- maffiou, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Well... My only use for windows is Itunes and Sketchup... It would be a pain not to be able to do anything else while downloading podcasts...
The solution is virtualization... With the added benefit that you can journalize your virtual filesystem... Suspect a virus or trojan, you can go back to a good known state... - RobotBuddha, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Last update: Tip for anyone else trying, be sure to reinstall the guest additions. There's a new option, off by default, to install direct3d drivers. Sadly, didn't seem to do much for me other than make my screen resolution change when I open the directx diagnostics program. direct3d still shows as not being available while directdraw is showing as enabled. Even tried turning off 3d acceleration in the virtualbox gui, starting the guest up. Turing it off again, and then re-enabling the 3d option. No luck.
- Octanus, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4I have Win7 virtualised for developing, keeps my personal stuff separate.
- sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Thanks for the updates.
- Phi01, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5But it would of been appropiate there...
- chroko, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4VirtualBox only supports 128MB of video memory for a guest. The minimum requirement for Crysis is 256MB.
So it would seem unlikely. - cr42yr1ch, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5Memory (both RAM and video RAM) has to be reserved for the client operating system, you can set how much you want to set a side for the the client or the host.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4I got really excited when portal actually started up. But it just gets to the intro movie, "powered by source" screen, then crashes.
- boardwalk, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Direct3D is still buggy. Other than it, it's pretty damn good for a free Virtualization solution.
- sloppychris, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5I mostly came to the comments section to see how well games work.
- dippyskoodlez, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Parallels had 3d before Fusion, but I believe it is the first for Windows/Linux.
- mrBitch, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Before you delete that partition, is it possible to "clone" that Windows partition into a working virtualbox VM ?
- RobotBuddha, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4I'm getting that same message with my XP guest when trying to run 'zombie shooter demo' from steam. Plants vs zombies did work at a reasonable speed, but I'm not sure what acceleration if any that game uses.
Giving a shot with the portal demo next. - Hortnon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4I uninstalled the previous and installed 3.0, and it picked up the config...I didn't even have to re-add anything, everything was there.
The only thing is they all start with a single CPU added, so I did have to change that. - etx313, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Ugh, No VMWare had it first. Not that it matters.
- Eezyville, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Is the video ram limited only to 128 mb like on the screenshot or does it uses all the video memory on the graphics card?
