- trogdoor, on 05/22/2009, -3/+39"MPEG, Dolby Digital, DVD, Blu-ray"
All already supported by ffmpeg, though Blue-ray DRM takes some work, the legality is questionable in certain countries ( notably the U.S. ) but the code is solid, and if you are willing to pay for the licensing fees you can instead buy Fluendo codecs: http://www.fluendo.com/ - cannonball, on 05/21/2009, -2/+38Why can't articles about video editing include videos of editing?
- cesclaveria, on 05/22/2009, -3/+38so Linux can't get there too?
so windows was supposed to remain insecure because mac os and linux were already "there" on security? - mooninite, on 05/22/2009, -4/+25You don't know what PiTiVi is. It uses gstreamer, which can handle any and all types of video and audio codecs. Sure, it may bend legalities, but it is possible.
Kdenlive is a close alternative. It uses FFMPEG directly where PiTiVi uses FFMPEG through gstreamer. I use Kdenlive to edit AVCHD video from my Canon HF-S100 camera. That's H.264 1920x1080 60i, 30p, and 24p video on Linux. I read all the camcorder forums and while those using Windows are struggling to edit AVCHD, I'm doing it with ease. I look forward to using PiTiVi with my video to have another alternative.
Who needs various big companies? I don't look forward to shelling out $500 for crap video editing software any time soon.
While people are complaining about speed and interface difficulties with Windows products, I'm blasting through editing my video. I even mention this on those camcorder forums and people ignore me. Yes, Linux easier than Windows. It's not that rare, but people ignore it with their ignorance... - mooninite, on 05/22/2009, -1/+22^ It depends on your country and your application (of your video).
Want legal video editing in Linux for the USA? Use PiTiVi and Fluendo codecs. It's possible. It's easy. It's here today.
*gasp*
Or you could use profanity 'cause it's cool. - theonlywizdum, on 05/22/2009, -0/+21Professionals don't use software or hardware that's available to the home user anyway. This software should be compared to iMovie and Windows Movie Maker. No one is trying to say professional video editors should all switch to ubuntu.
- corbinat, on 05/22/2009, -0/+20What are you talking about. I agree with you, but so far that isn't really happening in this thread. The few comments that are getting buried are either wrong, off topic, or are something to the effect of "lol [operating system] can already do that".
- PlancksCnst, on 05/21/2009, -0/+15Sweet! I can't wait to see what the Lumierre guys put out too (although I think it's a couple of years off at this point).
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+17Good for them. How's their 64-bit flash support?
- stuffradio, on 05/22/2009, -0/+13Agreed, maybe this will encourage Adobe to get on releasing Premiere and Photoshop on Linux. (Wishful thinking)
- raldz, on 05/22/2009, -0/+12I've been using PiTiVi for quite a while now, I use it to re-encode videos from camcorder, then hosted on my computer by MediaTomb then stream it to my PS3 for family viewing.. and it's easy as drag and drop, choose format - render project.. get coffee .. done..
- absurdist, on 05/22/2009, -0/+11How far up your ass, exactly, did you have to reach to pull out that statistic?
- srg13, on 05/22/2009, -0/+9"But "Bending Legalities" precludes the possibility of using the software professionally."
No it doesn't - that's just stupid... How does using an encoder that infringes on patents have any effect on anything? I mean, if you're infringing copyright (ie. downloading a commercial video editor on Bittorrent and selling a video made with it) there could be a problem, but still, you'd be the only one in danger of being sued. But using FFMPEG and/or GStreamer with codecs that possibly infringe patents means absolute noting unless you were selling the actual codecs...
And you can buy licensed codecs from Fluendo if you want anyway... - hartley, on 05/22/2009, -0/+9Great podcast a couple weeks ago on FLOSS Weekly talking with the Cinelerra and Lumiera guys.
http://www.twit.tv/floss68
Definitely worth a listen. - westyvw, on 05/22/2009, -0/+9The sooner we quit using proprietary formats the better. Why would you want to be limited to them?
- mohtasham, on 05/22/2009, -0/+8I like that.
- RPGmaster, on 05/22/2009, -0/+8Wow, PiTiVi looks pretty slick :) It looks like its easier to use then Kdenlive too.
I just got done spending two days putting up with Kdenlive constantly crashing on me just so I could fix up a 2 minute video :( - jeremymccurdy, on 05/22/2009, -0/+8Blender does video editing? I thought it was a 3d modeling app.
- theonlywizdum, on 05/22/2009, -0/+86.23 inches
- directedition, on 05/22/2009, -0/+73 days? Took me all of 3 seconds to click 'enabled 3d' and have it up and running straight away. What decade are you living in?
- mcprogrammer, on 05/22/2009, -1/+7@Radan, what evidence do you have for Linux users having "a high ratio of pirates"? We don't pay for software because it's mostly available for free.
- srg13, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6Blender has a surprisingly good video editor hidden away in it, actually... I had some problems with sound sync though, but I haven't tried it in a while. Also, it didn't really have any kind of asset management (when you add a clip it goes straight on the timeline) and you couldn't trim clips before you put them on the timeline as well. And lastly, it was annoying that when you pressed space you'd get the Add menu popping up, instead of it playing like most other video editing apps...
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -3/+9He's probably going to set fire to a bag of puppies because of this.
- Peterix, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6Yes.
- corbinat, on 05/22/2009, -1/+7sweet statistic
- srg13, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5After Effects is the big one for me really - that and Photoshop are the most used applications (except maybe Firefox and VLC) on my Windows machine...
- oneironaut, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5Autodesk have a high-end video-editing product called smoke. It began on IRIX but it now on RHEL.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=1 ... - srg13, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5A little expensive though - can't remember what it was exactly but I beleive a turnkey Smoke 2009 system (includes computer, storage and software) starts somewhere around $40 to 70 grand...
- srg13, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4I agree with corbinat in that the majority of the posts getting buried are off-topic or incorrect, but even so, posting criticism of Linux here isn't really going to do anything in the first place... If people actually want to point out a flaw that needs to be fixed, there are plenty of better places to do it, like bug trackers where the developers can actually read and take action on it...
- Skootles, on 05/22/2009, -3/+7This is great for home users, but I don't think it would fare well for professionals.
(Professionals who have to deal with capturing, and professional formats and codecs like Avid's DNxHD, XDCAM, ProRes, etc, etc.) - rpgmakr, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5Agreed. But kdenlive looked awesome a few years ago I don't know why it seemed stalled.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+6Yeah, ToastPop, and a Linux user doesn't care that we don't have good video editing yet, because we don't need to use it. I like 64-bit flash because suddenly YouTube and other sites load a lot faster, which is more useful to me than video editing since I didn't make videos even in Windows.
Implying Linux inferiority because it can't do videos is like implying inferiority of a prize winning physicist because he can't get a girlfriend. His skills are elsewhere, but he's still a very valuable member to society. - Feldon, on 05/23/2009, -1/+4Pixar has been making there movies on Linux software for a long time now.
- sauron256, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4<AstralKnight>Superior alternative to low quality Microsoft product</AstralKnight>
- DreadKnight, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Looks nice, but I'm all good with blender ;) more powerful, the best creation suite ever. But i agree it might just be too much to get into for some of the people out there, but it's definitely worth it, especially if you're a professional.
- theaceoffire, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3See, Radan's post is funny because many windows users who have Photoshop either got it for free, or stole it.
^_^ And many who stole Photoshop, stole XP / Vista too.
Honestly, I use a free OS because my Windows OS got completely F*ed up, the recovery disc was corrupt, and I didn't want to steal a copy of XP. I was just lucky that (at that point) the Linux Distro was able to get my work done. - popfrogs2, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3It should be expensive, it's basically a turnkey professional editing system that you'd use as a broadcaster. 40 to 70 grand is probably a bargain for an editing station.
- popfrogs2, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4"combined with a high ratio of pirates"
WTF? Most Open Source software is free, do you attribute free software to piracy? If you want to talk piracy, let's talk about software on the Windows platform, not Linux.
Crazy talk. - necuz, on 05/22/2009, -3/+6Maybe next year.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Kdenlive is by far the best one I've seen. I'll check out the new Pitivi though.
- Dalif, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3What part of linux did you like?
- ksgant, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2You know Blender has a pretty decent video editing section in it.
- jeremymccurdy, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Looks good, extremely good considering the other options available on Linux. It sort of looks like it's somewhere in between Windows Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere, with a couple more years of development, it could be a very professional program. Now we just need an effects program like After Effects.
- johnomaz, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Video editing is one of the reasons that keeps me from going full on Linux. I have a 3 year old and take home movies. I know there are titles out there that can do video editing, but none are easy. I want to do a few clicks and burn a DVD. I hope this turns out to be a great tool for video editing.
- mparker21311, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2It was a joke.
I haven't used Avid since Avid Xpress DV 3.5 due to how ***** Avid is with it's demanding hardware specs. - Bilabrin, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3I just hope it's more user friendly, intuitive and has a shallower learning curve than Gimp.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2New Rule: If you have a thumbnail image, it has to link to an image that's at least twice as large as the thumbnail.
And if that image is a screenshot, it needs to be actual size. - astyguy, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1sudo apt-get install kdenlive
- Skootles, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1I never said they should either? I saw comments talking about professionals using this stuff.
I work in for a production company myself, I know that we'd never be switching our machines from Avid and FCP to this. -
