- sq377, on 10/11/2007, -1/+63I want a mime trapped in my cube.
- 4ndr3wk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30waste of time? what ya doin on digg then? :P
- diablo75, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28Cool....but needs some work. Those things are tiny. Try a few high detail fish, with shadows and all those cool 3D effects.
Another idea: Some small fish always hanging around the service. A new effect you could do is to cause the fish to move away from a window in brief fright when a window is dropped on the desktop. - kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28so,
You know computers can be fun too. Do you just use Excel and word all day, not for anything creative mind you. - linnerd40, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15You can change the size in the compiz-config settings manager :)
Excellent ideas though! I am sure this plugin will evolve quickly, just as CompizFusion does. - Zal91, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14We really need a video section more than a picture section.
Oh, wait.. - rakstar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14from the article:
"Sorry about the horrible quality, xvidcap really lags things up a bit" - lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Awesome idea!
- mrmacky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12That's a nice effect, I only look at the cube for 3 seconds while I'm switching, but now, it will be an amazing 3 seconds :)
- tetsura, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12i hate people who say compiz and 3d effects etc are a waste of time. not everything has to serve a functional purpose, some things are just generally 'nice' to have, it's not like you have these things forced upon you, if you like it you like it, if you don't you don't..
- antdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I want an ant farm inside a cube. ;)
- TritonX, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Nobody care if you have it on your desktop or not.
The joy of an open OS is that the imagination of the programmers is the limit, and contrary to some other OS, with linux you can tweak absolutely anything. So if you want to make that aquarium to represent your processes like you suggest, nobody is holding you, and it won't cost you a penny to develop it, only time.
You find it useless, fine, but what's the point to come here and say that you hate eye-candy, get over it, you really think anyone will stop developing for compiz because of you. Composite 3D Desktop is here to stay, like it or not. - fmorel90, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7but pretty
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"The reason the 2D desktop hasn't been improved upon in 20 years.."
Ok genius, then what Apple have been doing to the GUI of its Mac OS for years and what Microsoft have done with this Aero interface? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I dugg you down, because you said "second life"
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"The joy of an open OS is that the imagination of the programmers is the limit"
That's sounds so beatiful to me. - linnerd40, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7No it does not. The actual performance is excellent.
All the flickering and lag is due to xvidcap. My system does not have unlimited resources, and I have tried multiple settings, to no avail. If you really want to experience this, try it out for yourself :-) (CompizFusion has much more "useful" stuff to offer too!) - phaed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6How about instead of fish you put a 3 dimensional representation of the file-system inside it with little three dimensional cubes representing files moving in and out of these other cubes representing directories. Then you can have a real-time view of the inner workings of the *nix system. Now that would be awesome.
- rstarr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7If you use the word quite in conjunction with the word fun...odds are you don't understand the meaning of fun.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Is anyone claiming that this is anything but pointless Fun? Isn't that usually the best kind? :)
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I believe this is a proof of concept. The fish are inside the cube and swimming around. Now the framework has been completed its a simple thing to work on graphics and movement. Making it happen was the hard bit, now to make it look pretty
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4why not?
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Please tell me if someone is holding a gun to your head and force you to install this plugin. It's pointless but so is your wallpaper and your comment.
- aidanr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is Compiz Fusion not Beryl, but there's a couple of things you might want to try to make it smoother, in Beryl's/Compiz's options crank the refresh rate up to 200 and disable "detect refresh rate" and you may also want to tweak the animations timesteps. A 7600GS should be able to run this very smooth.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It could be worse. The word "blogsphere" (or maybe "Berylsphere"?) is apparently the most hated.
I happen to agree with Ratteler, but it's that fancy promotional stuff that attracts many to GNU/Linux. {Linux=ugly} no longer makes sense. - aidanr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Not everyone needs to be productive when using their computers, my computer is generally about entertainment and it's more entertaining to have a fancy desktop than a boring one, if you want productivity then don't use it.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If the eye candy makes me feel calm and maybe make me smile then it is NOT useless.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3YES IT WILL... and I for one welcome our procrastinating causing overlord.
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7There is no Stargate, thus useless.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The most useless toy I've ever seen but like all Linux eye candy, it's not on by default and can be turned on by those who want to use it. Could be fun to impress people, though, and maybe for kids' computers?
- JrGhoull, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4since when does everything have to be about having a good point to it. i agree, it is a bit useless right now, but it seemed to me like he was saying not that it was just useless, but that it was bad. and its not bad, its awsome!
I think that one of the bloggers on that website had a good idea. have the fish represent things. maybe a shark of X size represents cpu usage, and maybe each lionfish represents...i dunno..each new piece of mail that you have. the point is that you could make them represent a million different things, and thereby making them, useful! :-D the only problem with that is that you would have to keep the number of different "representations" pretty small, or else you are going to forget what each fish represents - Ratteler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly. It's my desktop. Not my sandbox.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Fish would have been cool a few years ago, but now there are some very impressive aquarium screensavers. I don't know who makes them, but they are running on all the computers at my local BestBuy and OfficeDepot. They are very realistic. Anything with fish now will be compared against that, and come up short.
Better would be to put something astronomical in there. Fill the cube with black space, and have a planetary system in there. Or have colliding galaxies. - latour, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5but.. why? wouldn't this just decrease productivity??
- Kyouto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3of the user or the system?
wait, probably yes either way. - insertnamehere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2make sure you have the compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported package installed
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Do you realize how many people have installed because of Compiz/Beryl (now CompizFusion)?
- ujjwal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2All eye-candy is inherently "useless". To think of it, Windows/Gnome/KDE interfaces of today aren't too different from the windows 95 interface, atleast in core functionality, but you wont call the polishing and eye-candy that came over the 10+ years "useless" will you?
Today I still use a GTK+/Raleigh theme primarily, but like to play around with compiz once in a while. It may not be very useful but its fun and pretty :) - linnerd40, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No sure if I see what you are getting at. I mean "quite" as in "do a great degree."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2can I install arbitrary 3D models inside the cube... that would be awesome.. like 3D nude chicks perhaps?
- sitric, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2awsome plugin. but whats the use? i love ubuntu. but this just doesnt point towards more productivity.
- Ratteler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, there has been a lot of things fall by the wayside. Like a web page as your desktop, and Bob, who became that ***** annoying Paper clip.
That actually did do something useful. It got me to use OpenOffice instead of M$ products. LOL!
The Desktop is about turning an artificial digital world into something a human can understand. Anything that takes away from that human understanding takes away from very point of having a desktop.
This should not be an alien concept to any Linux developer. It's the same logic applied to keeping the Kernel slim. Nothing should be in the Kernel that isn't required to make the computer run, and nothing should be in the desktop that isn't required to make the computer understandable. - cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1very cool
- jkcsej, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's understood that this is useless. What the big picture is that this blows away anything else on the market. Yes it has the whole 'look at me' going on, but it's showing that there are resources left that can work wonders on a desktop. Beryl (and soon Compiz Fusion) is hands down the best interface. Better than Mac and way better than Vista. There are wasted resources in this eye-candy, but until there is something better to do with it, then so be it.
People have already commented about making it better with views to resources, and we have the capabilities to create that. This is a proof of concept if anything, and it looks great. - rptcalyptos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1its fun to look at the potential power of compiz
- ilovenicotine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It needs to stay on even when cube isn't rotating
- Ratteler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Thanks, schestowitz.
I would love to see this kind of tech in a Real Time 3D modeler, but on a Desktop, I just want 1000% effectiveness.
I wonder how much time people are really spending looking atheir desktop? It's like a really pretty Subway. I don't care if it's pretty cause if it's effective I'm not going to spend any real time there. - TritonX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2sigh
- iChainsaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the fact that it is there is awesome.
- iChainsaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Punctuation was invented in english 2.0.1 dude.
