This man is brave. - saguratus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20To build / install:
svn co http://svn.beryl-project.org/branches/beryl-3d-plugin
cd beryl-3d-plugin/
chmod +x makeall
./makeall
Tested only on the latest svn builds. - SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This is just a small and part of a much bigger project that most definitely has large usability improvements over traditional desktops.
Having the desktops reside on a cube helps you remember where you left things better than a traditional virtual desktop setup.
The Expose like functionality of the Scale plugin is a far far more efficient way to find a window than Alt+Tab.
Being able to type in a semi transparent window so you can use the document below for reference.
Being able to fold back the corner of a window to see what's behind without loosing input focus.
Press alt and scroll to zoom in on that very small text you have trouble reading.
The list does go on and on. It's "only eye candy" the same way that any GUI is only eye candy. You could build almost any program as a console program you know, but I don't really recommend it. - bonked, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21desc1 you have been marked as blocked *****.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/ - saguratus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is actually helping to stress test the server. It's on a 100mbps line (which predictably maxed out within seconds), so I apologize if things slow down for the first few hours.
I'll be posting traffic graphs up here for any of those who may be interested: http://saguratus.com/nick/stress2/ - SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That could not possibly have been Beryls fault. Packaging, configuration, faulty setup etc is entirely possible, but beryl itself makes no changes to X what so ever. If your X stopped working, don't blame Beryl.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's nothing. I was thinking of something completely unrelated!
- SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Links to installation instructions for various distributions:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Main_Page - urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8must have....so....neat.....completly useless, but I need it.....

- saguratus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Indeed, the project is called "Heliodor"
http://blog.beryl-project.org/?p=20 - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I love the compiz movies where they ACTUALLY SHOW SOMETHING NEW.
+Digg - saguratus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@dicerandom
This is a standalone machine used for experimental code, nothing special by any means:
P4 2.8ghz
1024mb ram
So far I have yet to see it break 10% cpu load, and most of it is from Snort and other custom IDS implementations. I've got another 5TB to go before I need to worry about bandwidth overages, and by prior history, this article will likely eat up no more than 1.5TB. - N432SEAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Does this have any productivity benefit, or is it just eye candy?
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I did too...I was hoping i could put this on xp and actually make it look good
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Beryl is just a fork of Compiz. Until you try Beryl, you won't know how productive it is. Quickly switching desktops , dragging desktops. Yes its a lot of eye candy, but for the quick access to desktops is great, and besides rotating the cube is fun. But remember it is still considered Beta, and may have some problems depending on hardware
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Holy *****! Im adding that right now!
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So far, I am very impressed.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While Beryl offers quit a bit of eyecandy, it also really helps with my productivity, and you can choose how much eye candy you want to enable. Personally, the continuous cubed desktop is my favorite feature. Being able to think...turning my desktop to the right is where I keep my reference pages, to the left is my testing environments, my current page is development, and the back side is my web browser and other stuff. It's just an easy mental model for organizing my workspace.
Also, it puts all other desktop graphics to shame, and continues to improve. OSX and Vista don't look nearly as good. - XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11This is awesome!
I don't know where the statement that beryl is not 3d desktop is coming from.. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you're bent on using Windows and want desktop graphics equivalent to this, MS is releasing Vista soon for a few hundred dollars that should have.... uh...transparencies....and IE7. Yeah.
What a bargain, right? - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I agree it is cool but I don't really see how useful it is other than fun looking window candy. Typically I play around with stuff like that for about a week and turn it off as I usually don't find it pratical on a daily basis. Interesting nonetheless.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10To play devil's advocate, not all distros have SVN preinstalled or have the latest of X server. But it's probably, if not definitely, worth a shot!!
Here are some videos:
SUSE 10.1: Xgl with Beryl Compiz
,----[ Quote ]
| Beryl is a combined window manager and compositing manager that
| runs on top of Xgl or AIGLX using OpenGL to provide effects
| accelerated by a 3D graphics card on the desktop.
`----
http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/10/15/suse-101-xgl-with-beryl-compiz/
Here's a separate video (also worth watching!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0ZtcxHUSDQ - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I've been using Beryl for months using SabayonLinux. For an easy way to try this out yourself, just go to http://www.sabayonlinux.org and download the LiveCD. To enable Beryl, use these boot options:
sabayon opengl=* res=(your max res, ie: 1600x1200) aiglx**
*put your video card brand here, ati, nvidia, etc. if you don't know what it is, just don't use the opengl= option at all and cross your fingers
**you could also use xgl here, but I prefer AIGLX, as it gets better performance on my graphics card, and allows for 3D acceleration while it's running. - daftman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Then pressure your proprietary, close source company to release it into the open. The fact that the open source community has accomplish this without proprietary support is a great accomplishment.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, the concept has been around for a long time, but this is the first time it's really been done right, regarding usability, performance and looks. I've got Beryl+AIGLX running, and it continues to amaze me. I've yet to see a video that really does it justice, it's just that good.
- sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4AFAIK, the song is "Just Like You Imagined" by Nine Inch Nails on The Fragile album "Halo 14"
I've never seen this movie before, but if they can dig back far enough to find Just Like You Imagined, it's gotta be pretty good. - czedlitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agree with SmokedL it's not Beryl, and mine is working fine on 6.10 with a 6800 GTS
- blackbrrr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5fantastic!
- SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Something changed in the svn setup recently. try:
svn co svn://svn.beryl-project.org/beryl/branches/beryl-3d-plugin - CaspianXI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It doesn't seem so. Most open source developers are using Linux at the moment.
- SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Something changed in the svn setup recently. instead of the svn command above, try:
svn co svn://svn.beryl-project.org/beryl/branches/beryl-3d-plugin - SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I use it, and while the effects are cool, I don't really care about that aspect about it. I have all the effects without usability aspects disabled. What I care about is the far improved usability and power of the interface. See my post below for a few points about this. This is far more than "just eye candy".
- bobbybobington, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10@desc1
comment buried for ignorance of kick ass desktop effects, and taking up way too much space. - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4*grabs it while server starts to smoke*
- murloSad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4try this, worked like a charm with my gforce5200 fx: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/XGL
- juraj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WTF? You can easily expand the number of virtual desktops in beryl settings manager.
- murloSad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been able to get xgl and beryl up and running on suse 10.1, ubuntu 6.10, and Fedora core 6 without much problem, all three have great support forums if you do run into an issue. I've got an nvidia card, and haven't tried it with an ATI or aiglx, but front what I've read it shouldn't be any more difficult.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I'll wait for it to hit the Ubuntu beryl-svn repository, though it will probably be too much of a strain on my poor Intel Media Accelerator 950.
- SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The sticking out is a new experimental plugin that is not yet in the main branch of the source tree. I expect it will be soon enough though, it does make it easier to get an overview of the windows. As for running Beryl it on various distributions, you'll find instructions here: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Main_Page
- SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Please see my post above for a short, off the top of my head, list of usability factors. If you think this is all about effects, you have not used it.
- computergee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have beryl installed and working, but i cant find where to enable this effect. Can anyone help me out here?
i did this:
svn co http://svn.beryl-project.org/branches/beryl-3d-plugin
as the first comment suggested, but i get this error:
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/branches/beryl-3d-plugin'
svn: PROPFIND of '/branches/beryl-3d-plugin': 405 Method Not Allowed (http://svn.beryl-project.org) - ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Certain companies feel they need to protect their IP by releasing closed-source drivers and applications. It isn't ideal, but isn't it great that they're paying any attention to Linux at all?
I think they should be commended for such a decent beginning, not reprimanded for not reaching Nirvana on the first try. - vhng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do I need to rebuild the whole package to get this new plugin? Is there an easy way to get this on Ubuntu Edgy?
me - LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What movie is that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@comments on nVidia closed source drivers:
1. There are open-source nVidia drivers, but they suck. Where's the patch?
2. I like the closed source nVidia drivers. They come with a nice installer that does all the hard stuff for me, like finding and uninstalling the previous version and modifying my xord config file. I don't really have a need to see the source code for my video driver. If it wasn't doing exactly what I needed it to, then maybe I'd have a reason to complain about it being closed source, but so far it works as intended. - dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Works fine with open source radeon driver on Ubuntu 6.10
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well post your coment n the mailing list then.
No one wll see it here. - SmokedL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something changed in the svn setup recently. try:
svn co svn://svn.beryl-project.org/beryl/branches/beryl-3d-plugin -
