- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The best way to use top efficiently, is to use htop.
htop renders top completely useless. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We're talking about computers here, so I think that in this 'realm' function is inaccurate. From top's man page in Linux: "The top program provides a dynamic real-time view of a running system."
There ya go, it's neither a command nor a function, it's a program! - odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4htop looks pretty cool. And the guy who wrote it is working on a port for FreeBSD, which makes it even cooler.
- sadohert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3top!! HTOP!!! This should have been the 5th thing the people teaching me Linux told me about. htop is my new favourite program.
- zc_au, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Htop rocks ... nice , easy , simple, n easy to sort into groups ... its blow top away :) ... when looking for a process that is running that u want to kill :)
- riskable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was disappointed by this article... While it gives some tips on using top on the command line it does not point out the useful commands that you can use once you have top up and running. Here's some of my favorites:
c - show full command line
s (enter number) - change the number of seconds between refresh/updates
Z - change the colors (can be handy in some rare instances)
B - Toggle using bold text (can be a lifesaver if you're using an odd terminal without bold support)
f - Add/remove columns. In a lot of cases you only care about the PID, CPU, and the command. Why view all the other stuff?
W - save your settings for the next time you open top!

"I have a license to kill -9" - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow hater2win, htop is simply fantastic. Just apt-got it now. Thanks :-)
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3htop is great, and I didn't know that about the port to FreeBSD.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I prefer the ceiling function.
- milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1/agree -- top is a program or command. top() top{} def top sub top() etc would be a function, method, subroutine etc. Sorry to be technical but it's tech.
- egbert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5top is not a function it is a command. Also the best resource for the top command is "man top". If you are on a *nix type system learn to use the "man" command.
- mackstann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2top is a function in the generic sense.
- RobGamble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg+ for the "A" parameter (never knew, woulda never guessed it was there). Thanks @hater2win for the tip on htop.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the Htop info! and the article on expanding your use of Top was very diggable also!
- anirudhvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this comment is the most sensible one on this whole page, and it's on -ve diggs already? way to go digg! (well, atleast till mine gets dugg down too)
- VStrider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1while htop is an excellent tool, the article shows some cool tricks with top on batch mode, which you cann't do them with htop (htop is interactive only).
digg++ - krampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to my mind htop is a resource hog and the benefits from it's interface doesn't compensate it's resource greediness.
- YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3No digg. A person would need to be smart to understand this gold. Keep it to ourselves.
