If the Gutsy alpha was out and you followed these instructions you would have it!
The -d in the command given "gksu “update-manager -c -d”" is short for --devlel-release and it's used to tell update-manager to upgrade to the newest *development* release.
Proper instructions:

Sorry for the thread hijack but these blogs giving horrible instructions that *will ruin your computer* need to stop, if anybody really wanted to help inform people they would use the official wiki where it could be reviewed and updated. These bloggers just want traffic, either that or they have never heard of wiki.ubuntu.com , either way I don't trust their instructions and you shouldn't either. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36DON'T TAKE INSTRUCTIONS FROM RANDOM BLOGS!

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading - johnnythawte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I'll tell you why he's complaining.... the other article 35 days ago was to HIS site. If you look at all the submitters for the site that he's linking to, he's pretty much submitted every single article. Just take a look at the digg search:
http://digg.com/search?s=onlyubuntu.blogspot.com&submit=Search§ion=news&type=url&area=dig&sort=new
You should disclose that before you complain and spam with your links. - justintime32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Don't do this. Just open the Update Manager, and it will work. Doing what he said may actually upgrade to Gutsy Gibbon, which no one should be using for another couple months.
- tommytux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Thank you, Trogdoor.
@howtogeek -
I think Trogdoor's advice is VERY constructive. I will be sure to look at more than just the timestamp when viewing your "articles". - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You aren't supposed to upgrade directly to Feisty from Dapper, you are supposed to go Dapper -> Edgy -> Feisty
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading - monkeyaneng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8alright guys seriously does this need to be dugg? i mean the instruction link it on the first page of ubuntu.com. now i use ubuntu and i think it kicks ass but i think there are better articles to make the front page than some of these ubuntu articles that could be found out by a 10 second google search.
- simonn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure, if you use windows.
With a linux and a decent package manager, e.g. apt, there should be zero "crap" on the HD after upgrading. If the administrator of the PC has decided to compile source and install alien binaries into anywhere other than /usr/local or /opt then there may well be problems.
FWIW, I have upgraded from breezy -> dapper -> edgy -> feisty -> without inserting a cd and with no dangling files. - unlikelycowboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I didn't submit it, nor did I see the first one 35 days ago.
- Mipit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@monkeyaneng
Jeez a 10 second Google search? what are you on? Dial-Up? - Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am a linux newb, and I got FF up and running, on the 'net, with the proper drivers, my printer installed, and wine up and running to play World of Warcraft. And it only took me two days of digging through documentation and asking for help.
But, I still think it's worth it. I just had to have some perseverance. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Who is this *actually* helping?"
Clearly not you. Update-manager does extra sanity checks and script foo to deal with dependency issues that can arise when upgrading to a new distribution, your instructions bypass update-manager and are therefore likely to lead to a broken system. - OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Umm, I did an upgrade and you know what it took? Holly crap batman, 3 clicks...
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it, all I did was click 3 times and it was on its way. I didn't need a guide to do that.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One of my computers is running feisty and the other is still running dapper (because everything just works and I don't want to mess with it).
Either way, in my limited experience with both, Ubuntu is better than Microsoft Windows™ Vista™ 32-Bit Ultimate Premium FULL VERSION for System Builders Single Pack UPGRADE Limited Numbered Signature Edition [DVD] OEM - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't matter whether I upgraded or reinstalled, used the live CD or the alternate installer. Feisty completely borks on my system, particularly with video settings. I even tried a upgrading from a fresh install of Edgy and it bombed halfway through installation. No matter, I was happy enough with Edgy to begin with.
- TrekkieDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While we are on the topic of sites that help you set up & configure ubuntu this is the one I use http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty. I have switched a couple of people from Windows to Linux and pointed them at the guide and they have pretty much been able to set it up, and maintain their distros themselves, and they have infact been suprised at how easy it is to maintain - "Easier than Windows" - Love that comment! :-)
- xertys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@cbreaker
Please tell me you're joking. - bean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I may only be me, but the upgrade has failed 4 or 5 times for me because of network timeouts trying to download the ~450MB of upgrade files. I think I'll try again in a week or so when the rush wanes out.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I pulled down the upgrade just fine. Too bad it completely hosed the machine I pulled it down to.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree that it's a shame so many people end up reinstalling fresh all the time. That's very windowsish. However, on the two machines I "upgraded" to 7.04, it was a total blowout. One machine wouldn't boot and took me two hours to get running (so many broken things... failed updates..) and the other I just gave up on because gnome was so hopefully borked that it was faster to do so.
Both times I said to myself "WTF? Last time I had to reinstall Windows because of system problems was three years ago." Upgrades through Windows 2000 to XP, from 2000 server to 2003.. (Vista is a different story, but this Ubuntu update was hardly as significant as XP > Vista.)
I always try my absolute best to NOT reinstall. You'll never learn anything if you do. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to think that Ubuntu is not the right distribution for someone to learn on because there's a vast sea of useless blog sites, HOWTO's about obvious crap, and misinformation that it's actually harder to track down problems on Ubuntu then Gentoo. - ilovenicotine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I concur, it's a good chance to do some "spring cleaning" as well.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are video webcasts that show how to do this as well. Different strokes for different folks, but at this time, this submission might prove useful to many, so it's probably worth another front pager.
- Mountaineer1024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I upgraded 6.10 to 7.04 flawlessly.
Of course I didn't use Automatix or EasyUbuntu to screw up my system.
It takes whole minutes to open the gui, add the universe and multiverse repositories and install all the codecs and things you need manually with the add dialogs. - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1About the new control panel: why do you get it when you upgrade from edgy but not when installing from the liveCD?
- howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I modified the article and removed the -d flag. Thanks for the heads-up, although you could have been a little more constructive.
If you take a look at the timestamp of the article, you might notice that I wrote it in January when that option was correct. - supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4if you seriously can't figure out how to click the upgrade button without a guide, you may need to seek psychiatric help.
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Needs more Linux Mint
I'll be waiting for Cassandra - h0ly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1trogdoor is right, although I think update-manager should really warn the user before such attempt. So, it's a bug IMHO.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's ALWAYS better to start fresh. I can't start to think of how much crap I have on my HD.
- Str8Dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to like Ubuntu, I really do. The UI is pretty. The applications are good. The philosophy is awesome. But no matter what I do beyond the initial install always seems to drop me to a command prompt with no hope of recovery. Even trying to follow the PC World article the other day:
1. Automatix2 won't install.
2. Desktop Effects causes X to crash.
3. God help me if I try to update anything following a tutorial.
It just turns into a circle jerk of frustration. So back to Windows I go. And in a couple months another linux release will come out and I'll start the whole cycle over again. - monkeyaneng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry not an attack just a comment, i don't believe that there are any gusty gibbon repositories yet.
- unlikelycowboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8That one was 35 days ago, and wasn't even spelled correctly.
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was dugg down because it's digg. Anything that isn't Ubuntu sucks.
- ubuntuedgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have personally never had an upgrade go well (with ubuntu), but it could be my hardware, 3rd party software, or something else that screws it up. I usually do a clean install and everything goes smoothly that way.
- RicktheBrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have Ubuntu 6.10 installed and tried to upgrade it. My upgrade manager does not work. I think it is because I tried to add repositories and did not copy them correctly. That is why windows was written to avoid long cryptic commands. I do not like opening a terminal and typing long cryptic commands that I have no idea what they are doing to get something done. Anyway I than add a second partition and installed Ubuntu 7.04 to it. I was disappointed since it does not solve any of the problems I have with 6.10. First I can not get the resolution of the monitor I can get with windows xp(probably the fault of the ati driver), second my mouse is not supported(belkin wireless and none of the extra buttons work or can be programmed), third is when I tried to view a CNN video it did not ask me to download the codec for windows media player. Fourth flash does not work with firefox(I have a 64 bit computer and I know Adobe has not put out a 64 bit flash player) fifth I use a program called boinc. It is a 32 bit linux program and it will not work correctly. The windows version works the first time without a lot of hassle. Life is too short to have to spend hours trying to fix all the problems to avoid paying $140 for a operating system that will be used for probably 5 years or more(I am still using a computer with windows me and another one with windows xp).
- spd998, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm really annoyed with Ubuntu 7.04. It won't even install on my damn pc using the live cd or the alternate.I've never had any problems with Ubuntu before, damn them.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just remember this article: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
I agree that in 2007 I tend to expect a more polished experience, but it's a selfish expectation and I understand that if it does what the people that wrote it wanted it to do, then it's successful no matter how much trouble you or I have with it. - spd998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I take my earlier comment back. It is now a few days after I tried installing it and it failed, but today I managed to install it fine with a new .iso file and CD. No idea why it failed the first time, I even tested the CD and it said it was fine.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cbreaker, did you use Automatix, Easy Ubuntu or any other extra repos on those machines? Did you use upgrade manager (not dist-upgrade) to go from Dapper (if used)- > Edgy->Feisty in that order?
They also switched to libsata instead of libata which caused problems for certain machines as well in feisty... - chaos386, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1docdailey, I have two SATA and two IDE drives on my system, and the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 went fine, even though I used Automatix to set up 6.10. The only thing I had to do after the upgrade was reinstall my graphics drivers, since I was using the proprietary Nvidia ones.
- Str8Dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah I would say all of those apply to me cbreaker.
- ellisera, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I personally upgraded two desktops just fine from Edgy to Feisty, however when I tried to upgrade a mailserv the issues started popping up and I'm looking at a reinstall because I used "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". Anyone upgrading a server use the following:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade
It should save you a lot of hassles, especially on mailservers; Thank goodness I have a backup that's currently running! - docdailey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh... I think this is an oversimplification... I used the upgrade manager and now my system won't boot. It can't mount root... which I think is due to merging scsi and ide drivers in the new linux kernel (I have both IDE and SATA drives). Not sure yet but it surely hasn't gone as swimmingly as you suggest.
- MaHaGoN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about instead of complaining here, why not file a bug report? Forums? Help from the community?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3There's so many oversights to this upgrade that I think it was rushed out the door before being properly tested. I installed a vanilla Ubuntu 6.10 VM with standard apps, and just using update manager to go to 7.04 broke too many things to mention.
If you want to use 7.04 your only real option right now is to start fresh... ho hum... - jetboatfishing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I upgraded to Feisty Fawn (7.04) from Dapper (6.10) via the updater in update manager. Horrible. Don't upgrade just download the ISO and reinstall. Their is much program compatibility issues when upgrading you should know from upgrading to XP and to Vista. The best thing to do is just create a data partition via partition editor using vFAT (so Windows can access it if you duel boot). Just copy everything in there you need (such as your whole home folder), then when you enter the ISO and install just format the swap and the ubuntu root parition and reinstall. Pretty much all the programs come back because their included. Just get firefox and thunderbird and your set.
Could not get Easy Ubuntu to work on 7.04 also. I was an avid GNOME user and switched to KDE from GNOME, I recommend you install Kubuntu not Ubuntu, as I feel Gnome interface is to basic and I needed the more advanced user interface and programs that come with it. I think KDE has much better programs too and looks much nicer then Gnome. - mysticpain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3This is great information for someone just starting with a Linux Distro such as Ubuntu.
- rock4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@johnnythawte
you are really sick man ***** you don't know the difference.digg users are ***** suckers - jetboatfishing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Ignore my grammar. I was using Microsoft Voice Recognition. LOL
