I almost cried when I first heard those words... - spinchange, on 06/04/2009, -1/+40"Thompson and Ritchie were the consummate "hackers," when that word referred to someone who combined uncommon creativity, brute force intelligence and midnight oil to solve software problems that others barely knew existed."
*****'s as geek-romantic as rock-and-roll is original cool, isn't it? - jjvors, on 06/04/2009, -0/+33I first started following Unix in 1981, in ComputerWorld, Byte, and MIS magazines. In 1988 I learned VMS and in 1991 HP/UX. It's amazing how adaptable and long-lived it has proven.

- BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -2/+23The best operating systems are unix-based IMO.
Wonder what's going to happen shortly before it's 70th birthday in 2038
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem - YourNameHere1, on 06/04/2009, -1/+20Unix turns 40..... and parents want to know when Unix will leave the basement and finally get an apartment of its own.
- tech10171968, on 06/04/2009, -0/+17Oh, I'm sure it will.
But this is an article about UNIX, not LINUX. There really is a difference, you know. - enantiodromia, on 06/04/2009, -0/+14If you were old school, you'd call it "the UNIX".
- papastout, on 06/04/2009, -0/+13I still have my Sparc Station from college - xtank server
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -0/+13Happy birthday Mr. UNIX. May you be around for another 40.
- so1omon, on 06/04/2009, -1/+13Well, since Linux isn't actually Unix, you're right by default...
- ashadocat, on 06/04/2009, -0/+11this was already patched on my eeepc when I bought it. I think the problem is more about embedded systems, like your car and non update able systems like streetlight control systems(they have no auto-update) many of witch will probably be forgotton
- EarlOfLade, on 06/04/2009, -0/+10Byte was one of my earliest computer magazines too. I loved their 800 page issues!
I started with *NIX about 26 years ago, in the form of VENIX/XENIX and later I used various NCR and Simens, Bull and IBM systems. Went on to work on various x96 variants of the *NIX systems, esp with databases in mind.
Oh yeah, I ran Oracle 7.3.2 under Linux back in 95/96 using SCO UNIX's OBI package. It wasn't pretty but it ran!
Today I have been battling with a testcase setup on an AIX 5.3 box. Good times! - TheOther1, on 06/04/2009, -3/+13already did

No codes of UNIX used for MINIX and LINUX because of legal reasons.
MINIX and LINUX do not behave the same. Too different kernels. - flashingcurser, on 06/04/2009, -0/+9Look at those beards!

- aserer511, on 06/05/2009, -1/+8i hope the future includes more OEM pairings. linux ought to be a household third option to windows and mac. this, requires OEM and ODM cooperation, assuring a driver hunt isn't as hard as a mac fanboy will be on monday [wwdc]
- LordBacon, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7Did he ?
- Khast, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7There's more to an OS than a GUI. At the core, the command prompt is more powerful than any GUI could ever be. (The GUI just makes it easier to use for the average person.)
The GUI was developed so people could be lazy and not have to be a geek to use a computer. However there is a difference between using a computer, and understanding what is going on inside the little box. - Ramble, on 06/04/2009, -1/+7Yes, quite possibly.
- EarlOfLade, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6A General Patton quote, any war history lover recognizes it!
"Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I've read your book!" - kd1s, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6My first into to Unix was in the late 1980's to early 90's. I was responsible for a SCO Unix box that my boss had managed to royally screw up. Went with a Caldera distro at the time. Little did I know that Caldera would buy SCO and then start the whole Linux lawsuit thing.
- T8erT0T, on 06/04/2009, -6/+12Stallman you magnificent bastard, you!
- jamshid, on 06/05/2009, -1/+7Happy Birthday UNIX, you look great for forty. Thanks for teaching us the importance of security and multi-user / multi-process computing. Who cares if people run it on their desktop, the important thing is that they run UNIX in their pocket.
iPhone==BSD
Android==Linux

Don't know what Blackberry, Nokia (Symbian), and WindowsMobile are going to do, but I doubt they can stay on their aging legacy platforms. - SifuMoKung, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5Nerd.
Ok, I'm just jealous. - zodieman, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5I find it rather ironic that today Windows is competing against nothing but UNIX these days (this includes the Mac because of it's BSD underpinnings). I bow to these men for creating such a wonderful and flexible OS that has stood the time. That's says a lot about it's adaptive nature.
- kobach, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4I still laugh hard at it to this very day.
- eight190, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4It is amazing that we still use UNIX like operating systems that are based off of a 40 year old idea. Microsoft has never managed to create an OS that works better than a UNIX based or UNIX clone OS. For example, Linux is now used on may PCs and Netbooks, Mac OS 10 is UNIX based(Darwin based on BSD), and Solaris/OpenSolaris is based on the original UNIX System V source. UNIX is here to stay for a while.
- bmanam, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4The fact that Nokia bought Trolltech (makers of the Qt framework) should be a good indication of where Nokia is headed. http://www.qtsoftware.com
- MattBD, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4Not to mention the wide usage of several *nixes as an embedded OS in routers, and on phones(iPhone OS, Android, Palm Pre).
- xgunterx, on 06/05/2009, -1/+5You're talking about the consumer market and not the desktop market, right?
In that case, if you would count all the devices that run Linux (or embedded Linux), you would see that Linux scores very very well. - drag, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3What makes it more funny is that it really was a Unix operating system running Unix software.
But people don't believe it because it was not all command line. - EarlOfLade, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3Caldera was created as a company after Ray Noorda was replaced by Novell's board of directors on April 5, 1994.
- MattBD, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3Actually I've used both and I think Ubuntu, at least, is easier to use in many ways than OS X. Though it does depend what you use it for - not everyone will want to install PyQt like I did, which can be installed with one command in Ubuntu from the CLI, or can even be installed graphically using Synaptic, but on a Mac you need to compile it from source, and it depends on something else which you also need to compile from source. PyGame is also a bugger to install on a Mac, but easy on Ubuntu.
So there's not really any hard and fast rules about ease of use - it depends what you're doing. - HentaiJeff, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2he got his swords around the same time right?
- lemur, on 06/05/2009, -3/+5People here are quoting the content of the acronym "GNU" without paying proper attention to the meaning of it and the inherent irony of the name choice. The reason why GNU is called "Not UNIX" is that it is a deliberate clone of UNIX. In practical reality, it *is* UNIX, but in name alone it isn't. This helped GNU to position itself safely away from any intellectual property issues related to UNIX, and it also emphasizes GNU's role as a UNIX replacement/successor.
So, in summary, GNU IS UNIX - neozeed, on 06/17/2009, -0/+2Run Unix v1 on windows machine with ease! https://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?gr ...

This isn't LINUX or Open/Net/Free but the ancient versions that needed IRON like the VAX 11/780 or the PDP-11... Enjoy some REAL UNIX! - haikuFU, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2That was a great article. Much of that happened when I was playing on the TRS-80 as a kid, just learning how to write in BASIC (and record my programs to tape).
If you like these sort of stories, pick up a copy of The Soul of a New Machine. I forget who wrote it, but it's an excellent book that was required reading for my first CSCI course in college. - bradleyland, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2Further reading.
http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/ - eight190, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2The 2038 problem is a real threat. I believe that all systems will be 64-bit by then. Another solution is to re-write the way *NIX systems keep track of time.
- mrBitch, on 06/05/2009, -1/+3Good point, didn't think about the fact that Unix and Unix-like OS are now going mobile...
- mrBitch, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2@ haikuFU, RE: "... That was a great article. Much of that happened when I was playing on the TRS-80 as a kid, just learning how to write in BASIC (and record my programs to tape). "
Me too, I then went on to play around with a DEC PDP-11 mini, little did I know at the time that it was only the second bit of hardware to have Unix running on it (originally coded for a DEC PDP-7). -
