please use the torrent...as of now there are a lot more leeches than seeds but that should even out shortly. Getting about 60 kb/s at the moment with 1.7 hours left to download. Torrent is the best option. - h0ly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+67I wish they had somehow integrated a bittorrent client into the update-manager...
So we could all be getting blazing speeds with bittorrent without even knowing. - adragons, on 10/12/2007, -4/+64Who buried him? Hes completely right. Torrents spread the stress over many connections instead of a handful of mirrors.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+59"Currently there looks to be roughly 5000+ seeders and only 1500 leechers."
Gotta love the Open Source community :) - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Recent versions of Gnome are actually getting a lot better. I've always been a fan of KDE but I must say that Ubuntu's default gnome setup looks and works quite nicely.
As far as downloading it, grab the torrents. I achieved 1.6MB/sec on the torrent and got the disc and the alternate disc in about 10 minutes. There's so many people in the swarm right now it's impossible NOT to get great speeds. - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Currently there looks to be roughly 5000+ seeders and only 1500 leechers.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Just FYI, torrent "leechers" upload too.
- solemnraven, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Kubuntu's site is fine ^_^ ♥
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15they should really start offering torrent downloads as a more obvious option
i had to go digging and digging just to find the torrent links
which downloaded ultra fast - antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17@cbreaker
Yes, but most connections have a higher download than upload, so leechers tend to hurt more than they help. Don't take "leecher" as offensive, though; it's just part of the bittorrent jargon. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Bear in mind that Ubuntu is growing at a huge pace, so trying to compare the scale of servers (capacity) to that of companies/products that matured over a long period of time is silly. An explosive growth like this also cause the PCLinuxOS site to have issues. It's a good thing.
- rchtr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15It's so great to see Linux gaining popularity. I installed Ubuntu on my laptop a few months ago and couldn't be happier!
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Thanks for the torrent link. Downloaded the iso in about 20 minutes!
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Actually last i heard they ARE sort of integrating torrents into the update manager, or at least there's talk of it anyways. There's a lot of talk about making apt-get p2p, with either torrent or (i believe it's called) jigsaw, which would be great, but there are a lot of issues that it creates, and I don't expect to see it any time soon.
cheers
-Dan - BrandonPerry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I upgraded last week before any rush anticipation. But yes, use torrents, much better than HTTP/FTP.
- drlog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15It would be interesting to know how many people are downloading it. I use Gentoo myself but recommend Ubuntu for "n00bs".
About 3 years ago I remember saying "In 5 years time, linux will be ready for just about anyone to use". This release represents a big leap toward my 5 year prediction.
Yay for open source! - motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12you should really use torrents, you can get it fast and help others get it as well. I got mine this morning at 365 kbp/s
- TheUnashamed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12There's over a 3:1 seeder to leecher ratio (3095:880), how much more do you need?
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Yes, but most connections have a higher download than upload, so leechers tend to hurt more than they help. Don't take "leecher" as offensive, though; it's just part of the bittorrent jargon."
With the regular method everyone's a leecher. BT is by far the best distribution option. - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm a KDE developer, yet I use ubuntu/gnome as my desktop nowadays. It's really polished and nice to use.
- ericrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I picture Bill Gates sitting somewhere obsessively hitting the "Reload" button to swamp them.
- Erukian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I wouldn't hold Ubuntu devs feet to the fire about this one. Tainting your system by running closed-source risky and unreliable software like NV/ATi drivers then expecting the ubuntu guys to nail all the hundreds of different install guides and techniques is a bit much to ask. If the upgrade works and you're running a non-tainted system, then file a bug report.
Someone did bust their ass to put this out and our standards are so high the smallest nuances are major headaches for most of us. People who complain about free software openly need to reevaluate the value of FREE SOFTWARE.
-Joe - Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You think the website is bad, try the repositories
- ooooo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Just thought I'd add my 2 cents, I used Gentoo for roughly 3 years and then moved to Debian and Ubuntu (back and forth kina) and dont consider it for noobs, The documentation with gentoo is so amazing anyone with a few minutes to read can do anything with it. When it comes down to it I like apt-get better ^_^
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Make sure you read this first: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
- chair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6dineitdark is kinda right
The normal CD is a live CD, it boots into a full operating system running off the CD where you can then install the system to your hard disk. The alt CD doesn't boot into a full system, it's just an installer. Just like a Windows installation disc.
If you've got less than 256 MB of ram then the live CD won't be able to run, so you'll need the alt CD.
There really is a lack of documentation about the different CDs. I wanted to know if the normal CD supports LVM. I can't find any direct info on it, but the release notes ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/704 ) suggest it doesn't. (If you don't know what LVM is don't worry about it. Anyway, it's more trouble than it's worth).
And in case anyone was wondering, the Server disc is just like the alt disc but it's doesn't include a desktop environment (i.e. GNOME or KDE). I think it might also install a web server by default (Apache, MySQL and PHP). - aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8seeeed U little buggers SSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- BigDanee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I updated 2 weeks ago -- I learned to beat the rush when I went from Breezy to Dapper. I was getting like 20k/sec when downloading the Dapper ISO.
I'm a computer guy but I never thought I'd be "geeky" enough to run a Linux desktop and server. I purposely used the command line in Ubuntu for a long while with the intentions of learning how to manage a server. Ubuntu may be for "n00bs" but it laid the ground work for me to learn how Linux works. I've been using Linux for so long, I forgot most DOS commands -- am I doomed? :-P
Gotta love the "man" command -- I've learned so freakin' much from that. :-D - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Burried as inaccurate. It is SLOW, not unresponsive. I've been on it over and over since yesterday and have never had a problem.
- Youssif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5what is the ''alternative CD'' please ?
- hourigan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here is a mirror with 4 Gbit/s of bandwidth: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/ubuntu-releases/
- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ademan: I haven't heard of jigsaw, but jigdo (if that's what you meant) is not really peer to peer.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can also grab the Alternate install CD from Bittorent which contains an upgrade script.
- wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Honestly, when I first try ubuntu few year back and I always told my friend this linux distro going somewhere... I'm not fan of linux, always hate the run around to setup some ***** up... but ubuntu is looking good, is possible could be next os might be right next to Windows? who knows. I'm hoping so, I'm tired of Windows on every pc every where I go, we need some new flavor.. some people say macos, well I don't see it and I think macos always going struggle to earn rest of normal joe love... except the macos fanboy they always going ride macos bus.
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4With a name like Randall you shouldn't be calling other people stupid.
Blocked troll.. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gotta love torrents too!
- ooooo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Its not as much Linux as the hardware companies giving a hand to help with drivers.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think they stopped supporting PPC.... (at least that was what I heard).
Could be wrong though. - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am probably super dense here but how do I update from cd using what I downloaded from that torrent?
- omcateer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About time I'v been waiting for a torrent
- CornrowWallace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did the internal dist-upgrade from Edgy.
My NVIDIA 5200 was recognized, and I got the new splash screen for the updated NVIDIA driver.
In my experience, this was a flawless rollout and upgrade for the established installed base.
But, one's mileage may vary. - ZJChaser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4well linux is one area I haven't really ventured yet so I figure I'll give this a try. downloading at 750k right from the get go. the torrent is moving! This seems to be a popular release so I assume it'll be a good one to start with.
- antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I downloaded the .iso from one of the mirrors... but now I'm seeding the torrent like crazy.
- NJHewitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2x86
- kineticarl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I used the PSU mirror too. They're across town, and I was on another university network. I got speeds of 1.8MB/s, got the image in under 8 minutes. ah, the joy.
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If your BT client supports it, try opening more upload slots and increase max connections. Also make sure you're in active mode.
- selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Great, all you updaters killed us.archive.ubuntu.com.
I can't install anything. Jerks. - Jorlwind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Eh? I was downloading it (as my brother was on WoW, and Bittorrent slows his connection. Hell hath no fury like a WoW nerd built like a gorilla scorned) today at 610KB/s. It was workin' great for me. Though everyone is right, BT is the way to go.
- tippmann1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have used the torrents but the kubuntu torrent was unbeleivably slow (ie. 7+ hours) and there was no one seeding at the time (all leechers) so I just downloaded it from the mirror
- antini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the latest Ubuntu, opensuse, Fedora, and other release are available with metalink. Metalinks provide fast and error corrected downloads over normal ftp/http and also can use torrents and other p2p methods.
