- SpookyET, on 01/19/2008, -2/+72IT HAS BEEN FIXED IN VERSION
2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.2
UPDATE! - suppressingfire, on 01/19/2008, -5/+53PLEASE don't link high traffic sites to bug trackers.
This is already fixed (the change has been reverted).
Both of these incline me to bury. - MickJT, on 01/19/2008, -2/+44Linux isn't just Ubuntu..
This affected openSUSE and Debian.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=4 ... - niallabrown, on 01/19/2008, -3/+32Just updated, VLC is working fine for me. Friday 8:01 PM.
- fatas, on 01/19/2008, -3/+30Like that awful xorg update 2 years back which made it impossible for most ubuntu users to startx.
Luckily I never install xorg or kernel updates straight away. - Phocion55, on 01/19/2008, -5/+32That was an awesome quick response! Luckily we didn't have to wait till next month's "Patch Tuesday" for a fix!

- lovekudu, on 01/19/2008, -1/+23IT'S FIXED!
You don't need to downgrade! Please mod the parent down!
The fixed .8.2 upgrade is out, and doesn't have the prob the the 8.1 upgrade did! See the article! - andycr512, on 01/19/2008, -1/+20Oh, and two things: One, you were warned that something was wrong with the update and asked if you wanted to continue, and two, it was fixed within hours. It's already gone. Everything works fine now.

Luckily, unlike Windows, "updates" aren't forced down your throats either. - suppressingfire, on 01/19/2008, -2/+17This hit just about every OS, since it was the upstream security patch.
It hit SLED and Debian/etch, too, since they all applied the same high priority security fix which included the bug. - dinostabOMG, on 01/19/2008, -3/+17Hum. I haven't noticed java or vlc down all day...
- sirhomer, on 01/19/2008, -2/+15If anyone was using Ubuntu back when Dapper was released, I am sure you remember the great Xorg disaster(tm). An update caused X to crash on boot and there was no way to restart it. It took me a week to get that fixed.
- suppressingfire, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12you would only notice it if you updated and then rebooted restarted X.
- srg13, on 01/19/2008, -1/+13The speed at which this was fixed shows how much better it is in my opinion...
- andycr512, on 01/19/2008, -1/+13They -did- fix it...
- pijalu, on 01/19/2008, -0/+11And Gentoo : http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206490
- suppressingfire, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10You would have noticed it if you had restarted X after applying the update. And yeah, it definitely affected Sun Java.
It bit me today when I went to a coffee shop to sit and do some work... I found that Eclipse wouldn't launch at all. Fortunately, I'm comfortable using Emacs and switched over and got a lot of work done. - Toshibi, on 01/19/2008, -3/+12Hmm, I wondered why that file wouldn't download.
- suppressingfire, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10Even better:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade - Langford, on 01/19/2008, -0/+98.1 has the problem, but now 8.2 is available.
- diablo75, on 01/19/2008, -0/+9That was fast!
- srg13, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9You shouldn't have to - there's already a fix
- SuperMoses, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10But it isn't inaccurate.
- Norochj, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9What about those of us who have used Vista and don't like it? Are we entitled to our opinions then?
- Phocion55, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10That's good.....haven't rebooted my Ubuntu box in 2 months.
- weeFred, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8I just checked for updates and theres an 8.3 , don't know what was wrong with 8.2
- macoafi, on 01/19/2008, -0/+87.10 hasn't been beta since November. And it did affect 7.10 too. It affected X on a lot of distros because they were all trying to patch the same vulnerability.
- sumguy231, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10It's working for me as well but that is probably because I haven't restarted X since then. I would avoid restarting the X server until the bugfix appears.
- bherring, on 01/19/2008, -12/+20If you get hit by this, read the bug comments. There are instructions on how to roll back the update.
Anyone want to start a pool on how long until this is fixed? - sumguy231, on 01/19/2008, -4/+11If something doesn't work you should file a bug report against it or it may never get fixed. Just remember, just because it's broken for you doesn't mean it's broken for everyone else or nobody would be using it at all.
Also avoiding security updates just because they *might* break something is a really, really stupid idea. - Phocion55, on 01/19/2008, -2/+9No, you didn't.
- dankosaur, on 01/19/2008, -2/+9ubuntu update break english language
- Lazaryn, on 01/19/2008, -0/+72:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.2 reverts the entire security update back to 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8. A proper fix is currently being tested, and is building. It should be published shortly and will be named 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.3.
- srg13, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7Well, it's misleading at the least, by not mentioning all the other distros that got hit with this, and how quickly a fix was released.
- SamuelDr2, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7Linux people, in this case, would say "If ubuntu doesn't suit you, try another distro".
- andycr512, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7No, sorry, I'd rather have a few apps not work for a few hours (or a few minutes if I wanted to fix it myself) once every few years than be hobbled every day.
- OropheR, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Was telling my wife not to update Ubuntu on her laptop while scrolling down the comments, then I saw your post. Told my wife, "ha, it's ok now, it has been fix."
Great job diggers, great job Ubuntu. - Gijsterbeek, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6kubuntu uses the exact same xserver implementation as ubuntu, so: Yes it does apply to kubuntu as well.
- andycr512, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5I think you misunderstood. I am in the rare situation in which my work is far easier and faster to do on Linux than it is on Windows (C++ development work with cross-platform libraries). By switching to Windows my work would be far more difficult to do, not to mention the initial period of spending hours and hours getting Windows set up to do it.
- potterboy, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5It applied to gOS.
- mhearne, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5Stay on topic! We can get by just fine without your graphical interface, as well as your advertisements. I don't give a good long bowel movement what OS you use. If you aren't here to contribute on the matter at hand then get out.
- MalDON, on 01/19/2008, -1/+6I have to admit, the day Microsoft starts updating software like this...
- Langford, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5I was having trouble starting hugin, but after seeing this headline I ran an update just to see. It grabbed one file, and now it seems to work again. I guess that was it.
- srg13, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4What? This was an X update that affected many distors, including Debian and OpenSUSE
- TheRealToma, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4Hmmm. I wonder why this wasnt picked up by people running the -proposed repository.
- cornelius1, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4The problem is already fixed in Ubuntu with the next update that was released later today. Just check again for updates, and upgrade.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -2/+6Just like your thick skull.
- sirhomer, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5I still trust the updates because of two reasons (1) Ubuntu has matured since then and also learned from that mistake (2) I am much better at Linux now and know how to handle myself in CLI mode (back then I did not)
- mhearne, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4A good friend of mine just bought a new Dell with XP preinstalled. But, the number on the computer is for Vista, and he was given restore disks for both XP and Vista. This leads me to believe that Vista is an option (at least with Dell), and they aren't trying to force it on their customers.
Good for them! At least they are trying to do the right thing. Dell is also selling a limited number of PC's with Ubuntu preinstalled, so they are giving their customers choices, while most other manufacturers are not. -
