- amoore2600, on 09/20/2008, -1/+7This is not a surprise, Ubuntu is trying to break in to the enterprise and eduational markets along with OEMs like DELL. Ubuntu needs to have leagal media playback for media formats that are currently widespread. Yes, Cononical is trying to turn a profit off Ubuntu.
I think that it is very sad that the consumer market doesn't demand an open and free solution for multi-media formats.

Ubuntu will *always* be free. It is *still* free. You can get it free at ubuntu.com, and you can illegally (in US) get your codecs from Medibuntu and other places.
Just because people have an easier option to aquire it, and a legal option to get the codecs, it only shows that Ubuntu is going the right away of being more popular for the average joe. - Vadi0, on 09/20/2008, -2/+5Too much bs to even fully comment on.
- inactive, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0I am not complaining about this, read my post. I'm only looking at the different options that MIGHT happen as a result of this.
More than likely nothing big willl happen, I agree with you, but what if Canonical start seeing people are willing to buy their software? - tnoy, on 09/20/2008, -3/+3Lets look at this.. “Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees.” You still get that with the default Ubuntu install. No one is forcing you to pay for the extra software.
Get over yourself. Not all software is going to be free, accept this fact. The sooner the Linux community as a whole accepts it, the sooner Linux will be a major player. - inactive, on 09/20/2008, -2/+0yes, but it isn't a good sign to start seeing Canonical selling software.
I also read somewhere that they have started selling other software as well, Parallel was one of them.
All I am saying is Ubuntu is more or less on top of the distro ladder and theres only one way they can go, and its down.
Maybe they will start selling more software? like pay versions of free software?
Nobody knows what will come of this, but are being the middleman for software then they "might" start introducing things like pay-to-download repositories, which is not good. - inactive, on 09/20/2008, -2/+0Please do not call this ***** when you have no reason to believe this!
