- latinjones, on 07/16/2009, -3/+28I can't wait to have your vacation pictures on my desktop. As long as your wife is nekked!!!!
- JeSTeRSeVeN, on 07/16/2009, -2/+25Yes, just make it blue or silver like every other desktop, ever.
- uhdean, on 07/16/2009, -2/+19Direct link to flickr entries http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/
- GMH24, on 07/16/2009, -0/+17LOL at the dinosaur action figures
- Taiyoryu, on 07/16/2009, -0/+15I actually don't mind it but I wish they'd provide a full spectrum for the Human theme. As OP illustrates, not everyone is a fan of brown. Taste the rainbow!
- BrownieMix, on 07/16/2009, -6/+20I just got back home from Hawaii. I've got some beautiful pictures I can enter. Thanks for letting me know, Digg!
- TheSeeker11, on 07/16/2009, -2/+16Winning entry, contest over - http://tinyurl.com/dabq5j
- rhinofinger, on 07/16/2009, -13/+26Here's an idea for a beautiful desktop, Canonical - one that's not ***** brown.
- Swivelstick, on 07/16/2009, -1/+11You mean people that can't fix a problem no matter the OS?
- aklu, on 07/16/2009, -1/+11@BrownieMix: Did you forget you were posting on Digg? You're acting like this is Slashdot or something.
- explodingzebras, on 07/16/2009, -1/+11Canonical knows first impressions are important, even when most new users soon change the default theme.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11260 pics (when I looked) and not a single pic tagged "koala" or "australia"?
- diggerpleez, on 07/16/2009, -3/+11I have never understood the emphasis on what wallpaper (or colors, or....) is available when you install. Who actually keeps their window manager looking anything like it does at install? 30 mins after installation, I have installed new themes from gnome-look, set up Gnome-do with docky, pulled wallpapers from God knows where, etc.
- compacho, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8Nice contest and all but didn't Canonical hire designers to do just this thing?
- 3242130193, on 07/16/2009, -2/+9Just cause you ask people to bury you doesn't affirm your statement. You're being buried cause it's a FUD and totally inaccurate, plus no one has any reason to believe that you have a clue what you're talking about.
- Shdwdrgn, on 07/16/2009, -3/+9All this effort for a wallpaper, do you suppose this time they'll pay any attention to actual *functionality*??? I spent hours last night, after upgrading to jaunty, to get my desktop to come back up again. From what I read on the various forums, they apparently decided to push out xorg 1.6 despite active bug reports that there were still no drivers available for a large number of video cards.
Thanks guys. Way to keep the OS user-friendly. I'm still bitter about kde4. Maybe it's time to do a little reality-checking and quit jumping on the latest/greatest of everything until it's actually... I dunno... USABLE? - mikemehak, on 07/16/2009, -3/+9I gave them a picture of my bum.
IMO, it shows both inner and outer beauty in one shot. - warp99, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5CC-BY
"This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution."
CC-BY-SA
"This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use."
http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/
Did you notice the difference in the second paragraph? It's that derivative works must "license their new creations under the identical terms". The CC-BY-SA license mimics software licenses like the GPL, so the reason is pretty clear why it was chosen. - bluelightnin90, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5If we want Ubuntu to go mainstream, it has to look good out of the box. Most people don't know how and won't take the time to learn how to change the theme.
- Shdwdrgn, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5I'm not really concerned about colors. Like someone said above, when I load up a desktop, I go through and change the settings anyway. What I care about is that after a dist-upgrade, my system actually WORKS.
Unlike upgrading to intrepid, where I was forced to kde4 without warning, and my entire desktop was wiped clean, all my settings lost, and unable to rebuild with any basic features like hiding my extra panels (which has since been added), or adding shortcuts to the taskbar.
And now unlike Jaunty, where suddenly there wasn't even support for my video card which had been working just fine before the upgrade.
Ubuntu was supposed to be the OS that brought Windows users over to Linux, but seriously, even as a die-hard Linux user I am frustrated that I can't expect to do an upgrade without setting aside hours of time to troubleshoot and get my computer back into usable condition. What do I need to do here, wait for Jaunty SP1 to be released before I dare the upgrade? - Swivelstick, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Actually the opposite is true as you are obviously the fanboy.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Getting people involved gets them excited and makes them feel part of the community even if they can only switch on a computer. This is more of a marketing tactic than anything else I believe.
True there are other priorities, but this doesn't take developer time so what does it matter? - sloppychris, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5The Heron and Ibex wallpapers were by far the best. I don't know what happened with Jaunty but the same old "abstract lines" they used just aren't the same.
- abbathdoom, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4"All this effort for a wallpaper, do you suppose this time they'll pay any attention to actual *functionality*???"
Yeah because the guy in charge of browsing the submitted pictures would otherwise be coding on the OS itself. Canonical employs over 250 people some are hired just to do design and marketing. - energyblue, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5I buried you.
Yes, there is (some) need for more driver support and a lot of other things.
That doesn't mean that they can't focus on anything else at the same time, the development hasn't stop for a wallpaper competition. - GaryS278, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3I downvoted you for using the word FUD.
- static07, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3If they choose any of those sunset photos as wallpaper I'll never use ubuntu again...
Where are the submissions where there has been a thought process other than 'these are my most chill photos'? - RPGmaster, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3But people are free to modify and redistribute my pictures! They just aren't forced to put a creative commons on their remix.
- RPGmaster, on 07/16/2009, -4/+7I just wish they'd accept my pictures that are CC-By... But no, they only want CC-By-SA :(
- slymi2005, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Actually it just says that they want to include a set of backgrounds, it that does not mean that they will use it as the default background.
- Tommydukes, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2What will we do when we reach the end of the alphabet?
Ascertain aluminum android? - Darkhacker, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2You're being buried for a few reasons. Firstly, the driver support on Linux is better than any other OS. Most Windows drivers are third party while Linux has out of the box support. There are still a few issues with some drivers (mostly closed source), but it generally works very well. Secondly, I don't know what you mean by "simple method for mainstream users". A simple method for what? Thirdly, it's off topic. It's not that Linux fans are denying faults in Linux. It's that your comment has nothing to due with the article.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Like Ubuntu, they want people to be able to improve upon the content and reshare. If people are not free to modify or redistribute then that wouldn't be in the spirit of the software.
- seclife321, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3finally! no more ugly brown.
- radu79, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Nice idea. I added 6 photos to that group (most of my photos are CC anyway) and had almost 100 total views in just a few minutes.
- sloppychris, on 07/16/2009, -3/+4Lots of non-computer nerds use only the default wallpaper. Yeah, I don't understand it either.
Girlfriends are weird. The good news is she has sex with me. - Frostek, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Why can't they pick sensible names?
Like 'Longhorn'. - wtfpwned98, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I'm glad Canonical is finding a way to keep busy.
In other news, the Debian project is worrying less about desktop wallpaper, but still finding a way to avoid having a brown default wallpaper that would send half their target audience running to Linux Mint (as if Debian's target audience really cared). - LostOverThere, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1They did hire designers for the interface and theme, but not for the backgrounds (apparently).
- cjnkns, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1I don't mind the brown really. It is just as nice as any other desktop.
- DarkXDragon, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1What is with all you people saying it's a waste of time? If you think that, don't waste your time looking at this stuff then...
In reality, the people who will be coding, will still be coding irrelevant to this competition. There's not just one man working on Ubuntu, there are many.
By making a public competition, surely they are offloading the time it would take them to sort it out? - jermsie, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Makes it a 'community effort' if anyone outside of Canonical contributes.
- radu79, on 07/16/2009, -2/+2Try Mandriva.
I got fed up with Ubuntu, it consistently ***** up my WiFi after some updates (minor updates, not a new OS version). - MrTea, on 07/16/2009, -2/+2or orange
- YaroMan22, on 07/23/2009, -0/+0Like they did for every release since Feisty?
I'm getting tired of them saying "NEW DESIGN" then giving us the same ugly orange and brown, again, since Feisty.
Has Human even changed that much? - cozad4, on 07/18/2009, -0/+0well i have an idea. i saw something on instructables were you can change your background into a self-refreshing rss feed reader. maybe it is a retarded idea, but i thought it would cool to have one. heres the url http://www.instructables.com/id/RSS-Desktop/
- cjlesiw, on 07/16/2009, -4/+3Try Linux Mint. It's Ubuntu, but more stable, more user friendly, and tends to embrace more colors than brown, dark brown, and orange. Far from perfect, but definitely a step above.
- RPGmaster, on 07/16/2009, -4/+2...Why am I being buried?
- jrm125, on 07/16/2009, -3/+1So essentially, you buried me for an accurate statement.
You guys ignore the truth all you want, only hurts the Linux movement. -
