- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+76What's the point of all these Ubuntu screenshots? Yes, it's GNOME with the Human theme, we get it.
- brettalton, on 10/30/2008, -5/+25Why don't you just buy some Ubuntu apparel so you can be as cool as these guys?
http://shop.ubuntu.com/ - Stroggoth, on 10/30/2008, -1/+18I haven't see that much brown and splatter on a wall since Quake 1 was released.
- defenswens26, on 10/30/2008, -4/+21I thought 8.10 was supposed to get a theme refresh. Did I miss something?
- dog2525, on 10/30/2008, -2/+18nice. Just switched from xp to 8.04 64bit and love it. So long windows. Can't wait for this!

That's going to be the default wallpaper? It looks like some mutant screaming. - nmanguy, on 10/30/2008, -1/+16GRRR!!! It's still not out yet.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+14Isn't Debian great.
- Jaymoon, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10sudo update-manager -d
- chaoswings, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1064-bit works perfectly for me. Linux has the same old problems with drivers but that's no different from the problems I had with 32-bit.
- commentposted, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10Aren't question marks great.
- ShoeSh1ne, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10I might give it another shot. Getting my wireless to work was a bitch and I couldn't figure it out. May be more patient this time.
- GumGuts, on 10/30/2008, -8/+17THAT'S IMPRESSIVE!
A whole new version, and it looks almost exactly the same
What happened to the big UI reforms that needed to happen? - Lexion, on 10/30/2008, -2/+11New proposed "Dust" theme for ubuntu can be found at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/DustTheme - HouseofEl, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9True, but I like it. You do know what an Ibex is right?
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+11dugg for token black guy
- ethana2, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9With Atheros drivers in the kernel and Broadcom drivers courtesy of Dell, it's very probable that you won't have issues this time around.
- twelvedogs, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1064bit ubuntu is easy as hell to use, *except* flash crashes all the time, however this is no different to my experience with 64 bit windows.
- Pixelpaws, on 10/30/2008, -1/+9So, does this mean I can finally get wireless working without downloading drivers and utilities and spending an hour configuring it? At the very least, is there some sort of easy utility this time around that won't require me to try and figure out how to hack a configuration together manually?
- Culyt, on 10/30/2008, -1/+8No, people kept posting screenshots of dark themes, or desktops rigged to look like OSX and saying that is what the next Ubuntu should be.
I believe there is a dark theme included (chocolate brown), but its nothing spectacular (mainly because its brown). (At least I think its included I have some how managed to remove all the included themes from my current install).
The default Human theme has received some upgrades (animated progress bars or something).
I think with Jaunty (or after), we might see a new theme since Shuttleworth is apparently paying designers, but don't expect much, it will of probably still be a human harmony theme (which according to the Ubuntu art team means brown) rather than what %90 of people want which is a bluey, grey, black or any color that look professional (ie anything other than brown) theme.
☢ - neasteflorin, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7Who wants to bet two more of these "Look at the Screenshots" will get dugg?

Hooray for complete customizability and Canonical's window-picker-applet!
I used to hate all colors lower than green, but in all honesty I think Ubuntu has altered my color preferences just by making brown look sexy. I know, I'm probably a pretty rare case, but still.. If you don't like the theme, you can always change it. Shiki-colors is probably the best non-DarkRoom theme I've seen around, I highly recommend it.. - inactive, on 10/30/2008, -3/+9If you cant use a vanilla install of Ubuntu then you should give up computers and Knit jumpers.
- Giga, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7You don't have to wait. Install it now, and just update whatever packages change as they change.
- BrandonDiggs, on 10/30/2008, -3/+9Wow!
the differences in the new version are uncanny!
oh wait..
nevermind - snached, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7Welcome to digg's past time.
- chaoswings, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6Just be glad you can change it
- ethana2, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7DarkRoom is the best theme I've ever used, and it's included with 8.10. They just didn't assume it was to everyone's tastes.
- srg13, on 10/30/2008, -2/+8Why is it that nobody remembers what Windows 98 looked like?
- Hirogen, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5You do realize that within minutes you could customize your desktop way beyond what you could in XP, and without additional software, oh yeah and you will need to purchase it or download a cracked version with a nice trojan for ya.
Have fun with that - expert01, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7Woah there Jabba!
If you're so hungry for Ubuntu, make sure you're upgrading via BitTorrent so there's enough for everyone.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Use_BitTorrent_to_Upgrad ... - rdvon, on 10/30/2008, -6/+11OOBOONTOO!!
- cheeseplease, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5... says the man with the Arch Linux logo.
- Otnehs, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6I think with the Darkroom theme it looks great. I do see the mutant screaming, but there is the goat thing in there too.
- Giga, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5"This latest installment of Linux for desktop computers and servers strives to be easy to use, a tough challenge given the complexities of Linux."
Every installment of Ubuntu has striven for that goal, what justsayshumr was getting at is there is nothing special about the goals of this release. - Giga, on 10/30/2008, -6/+10They happened in KDE 4 mostly, which is covered by Kubuntu.
- Pixelpaws, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5Ah, I see they were going with a "zombie" theme in honor of Halloween.
- chaoswings, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4ditto and the same for video cards. It's not pretty.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+6Already running the latest release, the first thing i can say is "wow" to the new wireless driver setup! After i installed , it picked up my wireless and asked me if i wanted to install drivers ( i had to very ethernet which was ok) i installed, rebooted and wireless was on! No more extra work with ndiswrapper and etc. I love the direction that is going.
I found things easier to install and configure more than ever before, everything just worked , i highly recommend it. - ethana2, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4That is very likely due to the new Atheros and Broadcom drivers.
- rezonq3, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4I thought it kinda looked like the surface of Mars...
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4lame for not using the darker theme which kicks more ass.
- Gndoab, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3here's hoping.
- chaoswings, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I'm not going to download it and run it off live CD just to look at it. The upgrade is fine and I'll get it a few days after release (avoid the horde). But I don't need to see it THAT bad.
- stainsby, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I've found that wireless is much better in Intrepid, and my USB 3G wireless modem also worked out-of-the-box.

3rd question: How do you pronounce Ubuntu?
From the horses mouth:
Ubuntu, an African word from Zulu and Xhosa, is pronounced "oo-BOON-too".
- - - -
Ubuntu is an African word that means "SuSE is too difficult for me". - megagram, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Wrong. Oooh, boon too!
- impei, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3still looks like the release candidate from here
- SDL486, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Yes, much better than the default theme.
- daverave999, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Because of the colours? LOL!
