- thecheat1, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Ubuntu will only gain in popularity. As people switch to Linux it's almost guaranteed they will try Ubuntu first. And 99% of them that are willing to stick it out with Linux, will be completely satisfied with Ubuntu, meaning they won't ever try any other distro's.
- klitzbtc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4I think you're really missing out, if you want to learn Linux there's no better experience than installing and configuring different distributions.
I doubt you are, but if you're trying to find a job or career in open source anything you're really pidgin holing yourself. I like Ubuntu, I used it for probably about 2 years (2003-2005), but I didn't really learn as much as I know now until I got out there and starting looking for other options. - cday, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3"The salespeople looked puzzled..."
..........................................................
The ignorance of sales personnel - in general - is legendary. Doesn't matter company you work for, the sales department denizens are generally the most despised group of all...often with good reason.
However, the "puzzlement" of the Novell sales people could be more calculated than real. Afetr all, if they choose not to know anything about the up and coming competition and a potential customer asks them about Ubuntu, they can just shrug, look puzzled, and say, "Never heard of it."
But whether they were only pretending ignorance, or truly were just clueless (not impossible with sales types), I think it's wonderful that the writer gave them such good advice. Obviously, someone needed to. - frontporsche, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3A couple years ago I switched from Suse to Ubuntu as my distro of choice. Switching to the Debian-style package managers was like a breath of fresh air.
I was probably just too impatient to learn the details of Suse's "yast" or "zen" or "you", but under Ubuntu the package manager seemed to just do what I wanted from the start. - SisyphusFragmnt, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I've used Ubuntu for the last year and I don't feel any desire to try out any other distros. I'm sure they are awesome as well but I really love the community behind Ubuntu and the support that Canonical provides.

Install VirtualBox and get a healthy case of distro fever.

- weizbox, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I'm not too surprised there... I've never had a good experience with Suse/yast :/
- shanedj, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1really! !
- DrHoliday, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1You want to know what's hilarious?
People who use Linux for an extended period of time slowly forget to differentiate between pigeon and pidgin. Thus, when klitzbtc above me used the phrase "pigeon hole" he replaced the word for the animal with the word for the messenger program. . - weizbox, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I doubt 99% of the people currently getting into Linux will never want to try out another distro. Every person I know who has gotten into Linux has tried multiple distros. Right now it's more of the tech-savvy people getting into it... and they're often a little more curious and adventurous then the general public when it comes to trying out new OSs (I mean, they did switch to Linux in the first place, right?).
- WiseWeasel, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Interestingly, debian packages were chosen for jailbroken iPhone app distribution as well, for the likes of Cydia and Installer. Of all the open-source package manager options available, debian was tellingly chosen. They must be doing something right...
- weizbox, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1We needed an article to tell us this?
I don't like the fact that people mix up 'popular' and 'searched for' when considering google trends, still... - darkchild, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1I have had good experience with SUSE/YaST recently. In openSUSE 11, they improved the underlying package manager (zypper) and its works just as fast as apt on Debian APT.
- marko477, on 09/29/2008, -5/+1I and my friends used a Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -6/+1Popular....in your mind. Its less despised than other distros in the mainstream. But, Windows is still king because 99% of the worlds computer users could care a ***** less about their OS.
Care a ***** less about....
